Reception Week Beginning 17.1.22

It has been such an exciting week in Reception!

On Monday morning, the class received a letter from the Natural History Museum in London, asking the class if they could look after a rare dinosaur egg, while a new cabinet was being fitted. After much deliberation, the class all agreed, even though they knew that it was a very big responsibility! The children decided to write back to the museum to tell them their decision. They also began to think about the things that they needed to do in preparation. It was agreed that the egg would need to be put into a protective case and lots of the children offered to make one immediately.

On Thursday, the egg arrived by special courier and was handed over to Mrs Heymoz, who brought it into class. The children were very excited and couldn’t wait for Ms Pemberton to open the box. The egg was a very unusual shape; the children wondered what kind of dinosaur it belonged to and so they wrote back to the museum to ask them. We are looking forward to receiving their reply and finding out more information next week.

The book focus this week has been the traditional tale ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’. Amongst many other things, Reception have enjoyed using puppets and props to retell the story, sequencing the story using special story cards, writing sorry letters to the three bears from Goldilocks and learning the Three Bears Rap.

In RE, the children learnt how God has no beginning and no end, just like a circle. They then explored and made circles using a variety of media.

In Maths, the children have continued their understanding of the composition of numbers up to five, when it is split into two groups, through lots of practical activities. They have also been impressing us daily with their growing subitising skills!

Have a wonderful weekend,

The Reception Team

Spring Term Week 2 wb 17.01.22

In our R.E. topic ‘Being a Sacramental People’ we discussed how God is present in the world all around us even though we cannot physically see him. We drew around our hands and wrote inside them how we know God is present in our lives. The children cut them out to make a display and added their title.

This week we started our poetry unit and our first poem was titled ‘Winter’. We enjoyed learning the poem to read aloud at the end of the week. We were able to discuss the poem, think of a suitable title and draw illustrations to reflect the poem.

Our Maths lessons this week have been very practical as we used the resources so find part/ whole of calculation and understand how this can support us in solving addition and subtraction calculations.

This week Year 1 started their first gymnastics lesson and were amazing at finding a safe space to learn and learning how to control their balances with a partner.  I even spotted them trying during their playtime!

Enjoy your weekend,

Miss Lambie

220121 Whole-school RE learning letter – Hinduism

Year 6 – 21/01/22

On Wednesday, as part of our RE topic about God being with us in the world today, we went searching for God in Darkes Lane. We found him in the memorial garden next to the station, in the buds of new life coming through on the trees, the lady in Sainsburys who smiled and waved at us, and in the cleaner who so diligently keeps our local space litter-free.

Next week is Other Faith Week, when the school will be learning about Hinduism. You will have received a letter earlier in the week about our trip to Bhaktivedanta Manor, where we will have the opportunity to experience a cart ride pulled by oxen, take part in a group role play, taste a freshly prepared hot vegetarian feast, see the shrine and arati ceremony, experience traditional face painting and dress up in traditional dress. It will be an amazing insight into the Hindu faith and the children will gain a lot from it.

We need 2 more adult helpers to accompany us for the day, so if you are available and willing to join us next Thursday, then please get in touch with me!

The children in Year 4 had yet another busy week. In English, they used role play to get into character and based on well-known Roman myths, such as the story of Diana and Orion or Aeneas and Jupiter, wrote diary entries and descriptive paragraphs using figurative language (metaphors, personification and similes). In Maths, the class moved on to converting units of length building on their understanding of how to make whole and decimal numbers 10, 100 times larger and smaller. The children used practical resources like place value sliders, classroom rulers and metre sticks to investigate length.

In Science, the children set up a series of fair tests to investigate the speed different liquids move at. They very much enjoyed this hands on task! They then created a data set of class average and plotted their data on a graph. Really impressive learning!

In History, they used e-books to research continuity in food and nutrition. They wrote in-depth explanations how food and eating changed during the Roman invasion and what similarities and differences they noticed between Celtic and Roman times. The class searched for the presence of God, exploring the meaning of the phrase: ‘Bidden or not bidden, God is present’ in RE, whilst in French they studied the names of basic body parts and sang a French equivalent of ‘Heads, shoulders, knees…’ In computing, they learnt about computing networks. The class also experimented with mosaic designs and started an art project creating a mosaic using paper tiles.

Next Monday, the class will visit the Bhaktivedanta Manor as part of our ‘Other Faith Week’. Just to reiterate some of the information that was sent home earlier this week:

  • Children need to wear their winter school uniform (no PE kits)
  • Girls must wear trousers (this can be their grey school uniform or a dark coloured tracksuit bottom. NO jeans, please)
  • Children will receive a hot meal at lunch time (very mild curry, plain rice, potato chips, orange juice and biscuit. All vegetarian (not vegan) and nut free). Unless the children have particular allergies that the school was notified about, they will eat the meal offered in the lunch hall. Please do not send in home packed lunches, as they are not allowed on site.

I am sure the class will very much enjoy this trip. Over the years, this beautiful place of worship offered a most comprehensive and exciting visit with opportunities to dress up, participate in face painting, visit the stables, etc.

Have a safe and lovely weekend,

Ms Varga

Friday 14th January 2022

Year five have had a busy week with their learning. The children started a new piece of work on mystery and suspense writing. They have been reading and analysing a book called The Watertower by Gary Crew. The children have greatly enjoyed reading the story alongside the visual images that accompany it.

For maths, the children have continued practising their times tables and have been revising the different methods they can use to help them with addition and subtraction.  In RE under our theme of Sacramental People, the children wrote lovely poems about where they find God in their world today.

As part of their History topic on the Vikings, there will be a Viking Day on Wednesday 26th January. The children are invited to come in Viking dress. A letter will be sent home with your child on Monday.

The PE days for Year 5 have been altered for this term – PE will be on Wednesdays and Thursdays this term. The focus will be on gym and dance and this will take place in the school hall.

As part of our ongoing work in RHE (Relationship, Health Education), the children have been looking at the unit on Me, My Body and My Health.

In class they have discussed how they are similar and different from one another and the importance of respecting their bodies.  Over the next two sessions, the focus will be on puberty.  Please use the log in details to Ten Ten’s Parent Portal to look at the resources Mrs McNamara and I will be using for these sessions in class. Reception Week Beginning 10.1.22

This week Reception began their new topic about time. Over the upcoming half term, this new  learning focus will cover aspects of the past, present and the future.

The children learnt about human development, from being a baby to old age during the Ten Ten RSE lesson. They also thought about how days are split into day and night and the daily routines that occur in both. Reception also discussed the big question, ‘Does everyone around the world go to sleep at exactly the same time?’ The adults were very impressed with their answers and the reasoning behind them!

Our book focus this week has been the traditional tale, The Ugly Duckling. As well as writing about how the Ugly Duckling must have felt, the class also made homes for him from a variety of construction material, drew story maps, learnt how to hot seat the characters from the book and participated in a whole class story sequencing!

In Maths, the class have been looking at the composition of the number five. The most popular activity of the week was the beanbag game; they children had lots of fun throwing beanbags into a hoop and noticing the different ways five could be split up/made, based on how many beanbags were inside and outside the hoop. They then recorded their learning independently!

In RE, the children continued to learn about the Epiphany and in particular about the importance of the star. They heard about how shooting stars are formed and watched film clips of them. They then went on to write about what makes them a star!

This week, we welcomed James and his family to our Reception class and Pope Paul Community; we hope that they will be very happy!

Wishing you all a lovely weekend,

The Reception Team

Year 6 – 14/01/22

This week has flown by in Year 6!

In Maths, we have been familiarising ourselves with the vocabulary multiple, factor, prime, square and product. The children learnt how to find common factors and common multiples, which has prepared them for beginning fraction learning next week.

In RE, the children wrote beautiful poems about where they see and notice God. These have formed our new classroom display. Have a read of what some of them wrote:

In History, we learnt about certain landmarks in Potters Bar that have relevance to the war, including the pillboxes in the golf course, and even a prisoner of war camp near Dancers Hill. It was fascinating to imagine our town playing its part in the war!

In Science, we began our new topic about Evolution. We looked at the timeline of the formation of the earth until now, which we then modelled on a toilet roll from the front of the school to the back. It was mind-blowing to see that on a 200-sheet toilet roll, humans have existed on the earth for only a fraction of the final sheet!

In Music, we explored rhythm, and played a game that involved using our body and a cup as percussion.

In Design and Technology, we began our project, which will result in making a fabric phone pouch. This week, we looked at the design process and wrote the design criteria for our product. There were some very interesting designs, and everyone’s very excited about it!

In PE, we began this half term’s gymnastics unit, in which we started today by learning and practising different balances.

Week 2

We have had a busy and an exciting week!

The highlight of our week was going swimming. The children were excited to get on the coach. At the swimming pool, the children were quickly put into groups. In PE the children learnt a dance called Pat a Cake Polka. They were fantastic! Then they taught the dance to Mrs Heymoz and Mrs Lines.

In Maths, we have continued to develop mental strategies when adding. The children have learnt to use think 10, compensation, finding complements and reordering.

In English, we have been reading The Finger-Eater By Dick King Smith. The children have loved the exciting adventures and have been describing the characters and writing predictions. We have been focusing on using evidence from the text to support our writing. If you have books written by Dick King- Smith at home, please read them.

In Art, we began our topic on collaging. We used tissue paper to make a flower. In Science, we observed rocks and sorted them in groups according to their appearance. Next week we will be learning about the different types of rocks.

On Monday 24th January we are going on a trip to the Bhaktivedanta Manor Hindu Temple. I would like 3 adult helpers please. On Tuesday 8th February, we are going to Celtic Harmony, I would like 2 adult helpers please. Both trips are for the whole day.

During Maths we have been exploring the inverse relationship between addition and subtraction as well as finding different amounts of money.

Our Design and Technology project has been a lot of fun this week. We children have learnt to classify, peel, chop and prepare a wide variety of different fruits and vegetables. We also took part in a sensory lesson, where we described each fruit and vegetables texture, smell, taste and appearance. Later on in the week, we prepared fruit kebabs for ourselves and a Year 1 child to enjoy as a healthy snack. Next week we will evaluate our fruit kebabs.
