The children in Year 4 had a busy first full week. In Writing, the class started a new unit of Roman Myths, where we looked at Roman Gods and Goddesses; acting them out, writing a school report about their often naughty behaviour and composing free form poetry to depict their beauty. In Maths, we looked at decimal numbers and using place value sliders, we investigated the effect of multiplying and dividing numbers by 10 and 100.

In Pe, we started our indoor unit of gymnastics and looked at point and patch balances, whilst on Wednesday, we went swimming. I was very impressed with how organised the children were in the Sports Centre! Well done class.

In RE, we looked at a timeline and collected events to match the periods. From the time of Israel, through the time of Jesus, to then take a closer look at the time after Jesus, focusing on ways we can still find him although not seeing him any more. In History, the children looked at continuity again but this time on a much larger scale, thinking about the advantages and disadvantages of the Romans effect on Celtic life. In Science, we started our new topic of States of Matter, during which we identified gas, liquid and solid states whilst grouping substances accordingly.

Thank you for Christoph’s, Christina’s and Ellis’s mummy for offering their kind help to accompany us on the 24th January. I will share further information about the trip closer to the date.

I also wanted to thank all those parents who sent in boxes of tissues since the beginning of the year. Especially at this time of the year, we do go through quite a few boxes, so your help is much appreciated.

Have a lovely and safe weekend,

Ms Varga

https://www.mathschase.com/

During our daily practice in class, we hit sub 10 seconds/question this term and children are gaining confidence with both the facts and the speed however it is still essential to continue with the fast recall at home.

Study Ladder Please log onto Study Ladder and complete the assigned activities, based on decimal numbers and multiplication facts.

D&T/Science As a preparation for next term’s DT and Science project where children are going to design and build a functioning bedside lamp with a simple series circuit, please may I ask parents to send in a 2l (sometimes 2.5l) emptied and rinsed plastic bottle with lid and their child’s name on it. Unfortunately, any smaller size won’t be large enough so please only send in the larger bottles.

Coca cola 2.5l Any curved or other design will make it harder for the children to use as they will have to cut and re-assemble parts of the bottle to create a base shell for their projects.

It would be much appreciated if all children would have their bottles in by the 25th January, Tuesday.

Thank you for your support with this.

🌸Spring Term Week 1 wb 11.01.22

Happy Friday and welcome to our first full week of the Spring term.

This week we have continued reflecting on the feast of Epiphany and added the Wise men into our own version of the Christmas story. In our new R.E. topic ‘Being a Sacramental People’ we discussed our knowledge of Jesus and the things he achieved.

In art we painted our Kandinsky inspired clay circles and have left them to dry before we glaze them next week.

We completed our ‘Animals and Humans’ Science topic by learning how to identify mammals and how to classify animals according to what they eat. We learnt some rather long scientific new words which were very tricky to spell and read! See below for consolidation home learning activities on carnivore, omnivore and herbivore animals.

As we have already learnt about adjectives and nouns we discovered verbs cause an action- this was a very energetic lesson! We used verbs to write a set of instructions about how to look after the farm as Farmer Duck has now gone on holiday and left the work to us! He left us a letter to explain that we was so fed up and needed a holiday!  The children worked well to hunt around the classroom for the verbs and then used time conjunctions to order them.

In Maths we finished our topic by learning about compass direction, there was a lot of movement involved!

P.E. days are now Monday and Thursday. Children should continue to come in their full P.E. kits on these days.

Enjoy your weekend and keep warm ❄️,
Miss Lambie

The common ones are the ‘r’ controlled sounds that the children are mixing up: ar, or, ir, er, ur, ure there’s so many!
  • Reading- Can you now spot any verbs in your reading books? Don’t forget about adjectives and nouns too. As you are reading you can act out the verb when you read it- we’re very active this week!
  • Maths- I wonder if you have a compass at home or can use a compass app with your parents to discover where the North, East, South and West directions are in your home or garden.
Year 1  enjoyed watching this to see them draw their own map. Some said they would like to do it for extra home learning. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_4b9tVmmFJE

Happy New Year to you all,

I hope you all enjoyed a good Christmas and New Year break.

Thank you once again for all the kind gifts. Yesterday afternoon the children attended Mass with Father Shaun in the Hall to celebrate the Feast of Epiphany. The

children have also been learning more about the three Epiphanies, and their significance. The children also took part in an act of worship in the class, in which they all thought very hard about what good personal qualities they could give to both their families and the school during this coming year. Here is a photo of a few of the children in the class with their gifts.

Wishing you all a good weekend.

Year 6 – 07/01/22 – Happy New Year!

Happy New Year and Happy Epiphany for yesterday! I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas. Here the children are in their crowns, and here is our Epiphany display.

Today, we had a Science Day where we investigated the question: How does the distance between an object and the light source affect the size of the shadow?

After careful planning, investigating and plotting results on a line graph, most groups concluded that the closer the object is to the light source, the larger its shadow will be.

Our PE days this term will be Wednesday and Friday, so please ensure that children come to school in their full PE kits on those days.

Happy New Year and Happy Epiphany to all!

It has been lovely welcoming back the children after their Christmas holidays and seeing how well rested and content they are. They all told me lovely things about their break and showed gratitude towards every present or experience they have received.

We focused on the Feast of the Epiphany in these short two days with a class Act of Worship and a Key Stage Mass on Thursday. The children completed learning on the symbolic meaning of the gifts baby Jesus received from the Three Wise Men, whilst they applied their art skills when they created a collage piece based on the Epiphany. They also reflected on the gifts they can bring to the new year and offered a gift themselves to someone in their community wrapped in a handmade Epiphany box. We also blessed our classroom by following a long standing Catholic Tradition where we marked our classroom door with the letters and numbers 20+C+M+B+22 referring to the names of the 3 Wise Men and the new year. By doing this we invited Jesus to be a daily guest in our class and to be with us in our comings and goings, our conversations, our work and play, our joys and sorrows.

General information:

The children will start swimming this term on Wednesdays. Swimming counts as one of the children’s PE lesson. On Wednesdays (starting from next week, 12.1.2022) the children will need to come in their full (warm) PE uniform. As of their swimming outfits, we have 2 procedures in practice in school. Some children (especially boys) might decide to wear their swimming shorts underneath their PE kit and have the rest of their kit (towels, etc) in a clearly labelled bag ready to take it down to the pool. Another practice is to have their kits in school and use the lunchtime break to get changed in the allocated toilets, where we can ensure separation and privacy. All children must be changed into their swimming kits before leaving the school, ensuring a more swift access to the lesson. After their swimming session, the children will have access to a quick shower and then get changed back into their PE uniform in the allocated changing rooms.

Any questions regarding swimming, please feel free to contact me.

Later this term, on 24th January (Monday) we will take part in a class trip to visit the Bhaktivedanta Manor as part of our Other Faith Week. I am looking for three parent helpers to accompany us and help the class as during the trip smaller group activities are organised for us. If you are able to support, please let me know. Many thanks in advance.

Have a nice and safe weekend,

Ms Varga

P.S.: Thank you so much for your very kind and generous gift at the end of last term. I really appreciate your warm gesture.

Happy New Year!

Welcome Back! I hope you had a wonderful Christmas. The children have enjoyed telling me about their holidays.

On Thursday, we celebrated the Epiphany by learning about the meanings of the gifts that the wise men took to Jesus.  The children thought of gifts that they will bring to 2022. They thought of the gifts of kindness, friendship, listening, patience and love. Then the children made pictures of the three wise men following the star using water paints. The children also made a collage of the three kings for our class display.

We have been learning the rule of adding the suffix ing to the end of words to support us when learning this week’s spellings.

In Maths we have been revising think 10 and think 100 to support us when adding mentally.

Swimming begins on Wednesday, children should wear their PE kits. Our other PE day is Tuesday.
