PSHE
INTENT
At Pope Paul Catholic Primary School, we want every child to be happy and enthusiastic learners. We strive to deliver a broad and balanced curriculum which is accessible to all and that will maximise the outcomes for every child so that they know more, remember more and understand more.
PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education) enables our children to become healthy, independent and responsible members of society. It aims to help children understand how they are developing personally and socially, and tackles many of the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up. Our children will work on the skills to develop confidence and emotional resilience, as well as a sense of responsibility within themselves. Through this, they will develop their own God-given talents, enjoy positive relationships built on mutual respect and develop a healthy and safe lifestyle.
IMPLEMENTATION
We use a range of teaching and learning styles to meet the PSHE Curriculum. We emphasise active learning, promote active citizenship, e.g. charity fundraising, the planning of special school events (such as collective worships and performances) or involvement in helping other individuals or groups less fortunate than themselves. We offer children the opportunity to hear visiting speakers, such as the police and local clergy, who we invite into the School to talk about their role in creating a positive and supportive local community.
We teach PSHE in a variety of ways. Teaching PSHE is not confined to a specific slot on the timetable. It is a combination of discrete curriculum time, specialised assemblies, through pastoral care and guidance, visiting speakers, cross-curricular coverage and delivery through whole school events ( i.e. internet safety days.)
Religious Education
At Pope Paul school we believe that everybody has a right to be treated equally and well. Children have the right to work, play and learn in a positive, supportive environment. There is a large overlap between the programme of study from religious education and the aims of PSHE and we deliver a considerable amount of PSHE through our religious education lessons. We aim to provide the children with a variety of experiences so that they can develop a personal relationship with God.
Relationship and Health Education (RHE)
The PSHE curriculum incorporates the teaching of RHE which enables all pupils to be safe and to understand and develop healthy relationships both now and in their future lives and it is rooted in the Catholic Church’s teaching about what it means to live well in relationship with others and be presented within a positive framework of Christian virtue.
Using the programme ‘Life to the Full’ by TenTen, our children take part in RHE lessons from Reception to Year 6.
The units cover the topics: Religious Understanding, Me My Body My Health, Emotional Well-being and Life Cycles. (See RHE policy for further information about this programme).
Science
Children learn to question and discuss science-based issues that may affect their own lives, the direction of society and the future of the world. Children talk about past and present events in their own lives and the lives of their family members. They know about similarities and differences between themselves and others, among families, communities and traditions. Through questioning, testing, sharing ideas, exploring the world and working together, children are able to develop the character traits that we value at Pope Paul School: equality, friendship, trust, cooperation, respect and care for the environment (among others!) We envision our children developing these character traits in a way that they will venture out as contributing and becoming valuable members of society where they build a better world.
Physical Education
P.E gives children both explicit and implicit learning opportunities and experiences which increase their independence and physical and social awareness. It helps children to manage the physical and emotional changes as they grow and introduces them to a wider world, enabling them to make an active contribution to their communities.
Pupil Voice
At Pope Paul we are very proud of the School Parliament group. Our children are elected and are given time throughout the school week to communicate ideas/issues with peers. The children understand the importance of their ‘voice’ and take pride in having a positive impact in school life.
Healthy Eating
A large part of looking after our health is about what we eat. As a school, Pope Paul School is dedicated to providing an environment that promotes healthy eating and enabling pupils to make informed choices about the food they eat.
