Friday 20th January 2023

In Year 6 this week, we have begun our new writing unit based on Arthur Spiderwick’s Field Guide to the Fantastical World. The children have enjoyed hearing about the different beasts and looking at the impressive illustrations. So far, we have written poems about trolls, made warning posters about cockatrices and written diaries as mischievous boggarts. In maths, we have been looking at our assessments to practise areas we are unsure of.

In PE, we learnt how to leapfrog. Year 6 made sure they provided a sturdy base for their partner and learnt the appropriate technique for leaping.

At Pope Paul this week, our RE learning has been about other faiths; the focus in Year 6 was on Islam. The children have learnt about the 5 pillars of Islam and, in particular, on their pilgrimage to Mecca (Hajj). I was really impressed with their questions and the way they could see similarities between our faith and theirs. Well done, Year 6.

Have a wonderful weekend

Spring 1 Week 2

The highlight of the week was our first swimming lesson. The children quickly got into groups and started their lesson. In PE we continued gymnastics, the children made sequences with their partners with spins and balances.

This week was Other Faith Week. Year 3 learnt about the beliefs of Hinduism. We discussed the similarities and differences with our beliefs. Then we learnt about the pilgrimages that Hindus go on. The children made a board game with the facts they learnt about a pilgrimage to Kumbh Mela.

In Maths, the children have been reading and interpreting bar graphs and tables. They have answered questions and compared the results.

In English, we finished reading The Finger Eater. The children wrote a letter as one of the characters, describing the events using evidence from the text. The children have developed their sentence structure by using adverbs and subordinating conjunctions. Next week, the children will be planning and writing their own version of the story.

In Art, we started with some mark making. Then the children walked around the classroom to appreciate other children’s learning.

In Science, we sorted rocks according to their properties.

This week, in Year 4, the children learnt about Buddhism as part of their Other Faith Week. First, they used iPads to research the main beliefs of this ancient religion and commented on the similarities between Buddhism and Christianity. Then they watched video clips about Lumbini in Nepal, one of the most visited Buddhist Pilgrimage places in the world that became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1997. During the week, they also looked at Buddhist symbols and made origami Lotus flowers.

In Maths, the children continued their learning of decimal numbers and extended it towards numbers with 2 decimal places whilst also placing these numbers in context when converting between units of measurements.

In English, the class carried on in their unit of ‘The Spider and the Fly’ focusing on sentence structure.

In Science, they completed learning summarizing their understanding of Sound, whilst in PE they began their new unit of dance with a Roman theme. They also enjoyed their first swimming lessons and it has been great to see their confidence in the pool.

In Art, they created still life sketches using pen and pencil, thinking about outline, shadow and texture.

For our next D&T project, please may I ask that you send in a clean 0.5l plastic bottle with lid, labelled with the children’s name. Please send these in, by Monday, 30th January 2023. Thank you in advance for your support with this.

Happy New Year!

On Monday we returned to school and celebrated the feast of the Epiphany. The children wore the crowns they made at the end of last year and thought about what gifts they could bring to the world, like the Magi brought gifts to Jesus.

In both English and Maths, Year 6 took part in assessments to help guide us in where our learning will go next. In D&T, the children have been busy at work cutting and sewing their own phone cases. Our Science learning this week has focused on reflection. We explored which material was the best reflector and looked for patterns in reflecting images. The focus for PE this half term will be gymnastics.

Today we were reunited with our reading partners. There were plenty of smiles and laughs as they caught up after the break.

Have a restful weekend.

Year 5 – 13/01/22

Happy New Year and welcome back! On Monday, we celebrated the Feast of the Epiphany that took place last Friday. The children made crowns fit for a king and reflected on what gifts they will bring to the world this year. In our RE lessons, we learned what the word ‘epiphany’ actually means and recognised that there are in fact three epiphanies of Jesus.

In Maths, we have been learning and practising the formal written method for addition and subtraction, and in PE we began our gymnastics unit. In Science, we started making spinners in order to investigate the effect that surface area has on a falling object.

It has been a lovely week and a great start to the new term!

Have a great weekend and see you on Monday 😊

Spring 1 Week 1

Happy New Year! I hope you had a wonderful Christmas. Thank you for our cards and the generous gifts.

In Religion, the children listened to the story of the Three Wise Men visiting Jesus. We talked about the meaning of the word Epiphany and discussed the epiphany moments during the week. The children made stars with their epiphany moments on them.

In PE, our topic is Gymnastics. This week the children travelled in different ways along the apparatus. They thought carefully about how they jumped and landed safety.

In Maths, we have been revising the different addition and subtraction strategies and solving problems.

In English, the children have been enthusiastic about The Finger Eater Story. They have been gathering evidence from the text to describe the Finger Eater and to warn others about what they should do if they meet him. The children made fantastic predictions about what the characters could do to trick the unusual troll. Then the children made collages of the troll.

In Science the children have been learning about different types of rocks.

PE days are Tuesday and Wednesday. This Wednesday the children are starting swimming.

Welcome back and Happy New Year! I hope you had a wonderful Christmas. Thank you for your lovely cards and the generous gifts.

This week, the children used different everyday items and materials in Science to create simple instruments and investigated them further to see how they can change volume and pitch; making connections between vibration and frequency.

In Art, they looked at Paul Cézanne and his still-life. After learning about his life and discussing his technique and style, the class started replicating his mark making and the effect it creates.

In English, the children started a new unit, based on the beautiful picture book, ‘The Spider and the Fly’. They have written short, interim pieces throughout the week, from advertisements to diary entries, whilst also constructing spider webs using paper straws to create a display area for their later extended writing pieces.

In Maths, the class completed some revisions before moving on to decimal numbers (multiplying and dividing whole numbers by ten).

In RE, we focused on the Feast of the Epiphany, explaining and reflecting on the gifts brought by the Three Wise Men.

PE days, this term will be Monday and Wednesday. Swimming will start next week; please make sure to give permission for children to attend via Schoolcomms.

Reception Week Beginning 9.1.23

Happy New Year!

Welcome back! We hope you had a wonderful Christmas and restful break.

It was lovely to see the children and their families on Monday morning. The whole class have returned to school healthy, happy and with a great attitude towards their learning!

Reception began their week by learning about the Epiphany. They thought about what gift they will give to the world this year and made crowns, which they wore to the special whole school Epiphany assembly.

Our new whole class learning focus this half term is, Time- Past, Present and Future. This week the children have been thinking about the story ‘What’s the Time Mr Wolf?’ by Debbie Gilori.

You can watch the Debbie Gilori reading her book here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4T3vvAa-qTs

The children went on to think about the best and worst time they have ever had. They also made clocks and watches from a variety of materials, they learnt about day and night and discussed the things they do as part of their daily routine. They had lots of fun playing the game ‘What’s the Time Mr Wolf?’ too.

The weather has not been at all kind to us this week, so as soon as it was dry enough on Thursday, we took the maths lesson outside onto the KS2 playground. The children have been learning about the composition of the number five and had lots of fun using the hoops and beanbags to find different ways of making the number. The children learnt how to say a number sentence and some children even wrote some number sentences down, when they got back to class.

It looks like we are due to have a very cold week next week. Please ensure that your child is dressed warmly and in particular has a named hats and pair of gloves.

Wishing you a lovely weekend,

The Reception Team
