Walk to School Week: 21st May – 25th May

We are encouraging pupils, parents or carers to swap four wheels for two feet and give walking a go this Walk to School Week 21st to 25th May.

As part of the challenge this year, pupils will be encouraged to wear the shoes that make them happiest – whether that is the brightest, jazziest or craziest shoes they own, to celebrate Living Streets’ Happy Shoesday on Tuesday 22nd May when we will be celebrating.

Our message in school is that walking to school is a brilliant way to get active and healthy. It’s also a great opportunity for our children to learn vital road safety skills and make sure they’re alert and ready to learn at the start of a new day. Walk to School Week is part of National Walking Month organised by ‘Living Streets’.

This year Living Streets is urging families to pledge to walk to school via their website. Please bring a suggested donation of £1.00, to be sent to Living streets, the UK’s only charity for everyday walking. Living Streets say:

  •  parents who walk find the journey to school less stressful,
  •  petrol bill goes down, and pollution
  •  fewer traffic queues and parking issues
  • children perform better at school
  • Children & parents feel healthier and fitter.
  • Teachers report that those pupils who walk to school are more attentive once they reach their desks.

Over 400,000 pupils took part in Walk to School Week 2017 – and this year is shaping up to be even bigger.

Please join in and support this fundraising campaign!

Week 4: 11th May

IMG_0627This week, we have completed our final versions of the Road to Emmaus and have begun our new English Unit.  In Maths, we have spent our lessons looking at efficient ways of multiplying and learning the formal method of multiplication.  The children’s timestable knowledge has assisted with this work and they have risen to the daily tables challenge!  Well done Year 4.

In Spellings we have moved onto the soft ‘c’ spellings learning that when ‘c’ is followed by: e, i, y it is sounded as ‘s’.

On Friday, the children took part in the May procession to honour Our Lady.  The children brought in flowers to lay them around the statue of Our Lady.  The two oldest children in the school, William and Lily in Year 6 crowned Our Lady with a crown of flowers.  It was such a special morning and the children were reverent and prayerful throughout.  Thank you also to Maria who make a crown for Mary and this was added to the crown used.

The parish and some parents attended the Procession and refreshments were served afterwards.

Have a lovely weekend.  We will be thinking of Angelina this weekend as she receives Jesus in Holy Communion on Sunday.

Week 3: 4th May

Another week in which we have seen and experienced all seasons!

The children have been working hard on their final newspaper stories about the Road to Emmaus. In RE we have been looking at the four gospels and the various accounts of the resurrection. The children will be finding out more about the story of Pentecost next week. In Science the children recorded their final ‘egg’ observations and have begun their new topic on Habitats, investigating the school environment and the habitats within it.

In Tennis the children learnt some indoor tennis skills as the rain kept them away from learning outside.

Week 2: 27th April

This week, we have continued writing our newspaper reports about The Road to Emmaus.  The children have been editing their writing and learning to read their reports to an audience.  They visited the children in Year 3 –  sharing their news reports and listening to those that their partners (from Year 3) had written.  The classroom was a buzz of excitement and myself and Miss Pringle watched with delight on how the children interacted and spoke proudly about their writing.

In Maths we have continued with our work on fractions and in Science, we have continued to record what is happening to the ‘our eggs’ that have been immersed in various liquids (coffee, tea, red bull etc).  The children are fascinated about what effects these have on the enamel of their teeth.

In PE we are now learning Tennis and the children enjoyed learning team games this week.

On Monday, we celebrated St Georges Day –many of the children came to school in their Brownie, Cubs and Scout uniforms! It was lovely to learn about St George from the wonderful Year 1 Assembly on Monday.

Have a lovely weekend.

Week 1 Summer Term 20th April

IMG_1121 IMG_1124

Well, it has been a wonderful week back at school!  We have had sunshine to keep us happy and the children have returned refreshed from their Easter break.  Myself and Miss Varga have loved hearing about your Easter holidays and the abundance of Easter eggs you received!

This week we have been looking at features of a newspaper as we will be writing our news articles based on the story of the Road to Emmaus.  In Maths we have continued our work on Fractions and fractions of amounts and the children have worked hard to understand this topic using pictorial representations to help them.

In Science we have been talking about Teeth and we will be carrying out experiments to see what affects them.

On Friday afternoon, Mrs Burgess led the children for our final session on making some lovely willow fences in the Peace Garden.  Many parents came to see the lovely willow structures that the children have made and it was lovely to see the parents have a go and work with willow too!

The homework for this week is set on Mathletics and Spag. Please log in to see the tasks.   The spellings are based on the eigh, ei  words the children have been working with.

Have a lovely weekend.

Year 4 Blog

The children have had a busy week. We had a CAFOD workshop on Monday from RoseMarie, about the work the charity does for disadvantaged communities around the world. Money raised towards our Lent appeal between Shrove Tuesday 13 February and Saturday 12 May will be doubled by the UK Government,  so RoseMarie talked to the children about raising funds through their lenten boxes to make double the difference! Please continue to encourage your children to fill their lenten boxes. Their efforts will allow CAFOD to help those children, young people and families who need it most. The boxes can be returned after the Easter break.IMG_0998 IMG_0999 IMG_1000

On Tuesday the children took part in an E-safety drama workshop. The session covered the benefits, and many positives, of internet use and addressed the related issues that children  face by providing practical advice that is easy to apply. Issues covered in the workshop included personal information, downloading, cyber bullying, block-ups, gaming, digital footprints, and more.

On Wednesday the children received the Sacrament of Reconciliation as part of their Lenten journey. Fr Pat, from Borehamwood parish, joined Fr Shaun to assist with confessions.

To finish the week the children all took part in various sports activities for Sports Relief.

Please can you ensure you practise your words for the ‘Way of the Cross’ service  next Tuesday evening.

Have a lovely weekend.

Friday 9th March

This week has been one that started off full of colour from all the costumes that were worn for World Book Day!

A big thank you to the parents who helped the children dress up in such a wonderful array of costumes portraying characters from literature. As the cold snowy weather delayed our  special day, it was particularly impressive  with the variety of costumes that the children came in. Many staff joined in the fun dressing up as  some of their favourite characters too.

In RE, we looked at the importance of Fairtrade and found out about Patrick,  a Tea farmer from Kenya.  Through guided reading, the children found out more about Fairtrade and the importance of a fair wage.  We also have learnt more about Lent through: Praying, Fasting and Giving.

On Wednesday, we took part in the Year 3 and 4 Mass at church.  The children who read and took up the offertory gifts did so with such reverence and confidence.  The singing also made the mass memorable for all.  Well done to the class.

We have also been busy with our Sports this week: rugby, dance and swimming….the links with maths and rugby is making the lesson even more interesting.

It has been a pleasure for myself and Ms Varga to meet with you over the last few weeks to discuss your child’s progress.  We hope that you found the consultations informative.

Today (Friday) Mrs Burgess continued her work on Sculpting with willow but this this  time making spheres.

Homework has been handed out and as  usual, I will be available at Homework Club on Monday and Tuesday (Lunchtime).

Have a wonderful weekend.

English Links: Have a Look! BBC 500 words 2018 Writing Competition

Dear Year 4,

Using your creative writing skills, why not have a go at writing your own story and submitting it?

BBC 500 words 2018

Chris Evans’ short story-writing competition for kids, in association with Oxford University Press.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p00rfvk1/clips

Seven years ago, Chris Evans had a dream: to get children excited about reading and writing. All children, no matter what their ability. 500 Words is now one of the most successful story-writing competitions for kids in the world: Three quarters of a million children have written a story for the competition over the years!

It’s very simple. Entrants write an original story on any subject or theme in 500 Words or fewer and submit it online. If they win, their story will be read live on the radio by a superstar celebrity…like Julie Walters, Tom Hiddleston, Sir Kenneth Branagh, Jeremy Irons, or Sherlock himself – Benedict Cumberbatch. Each year, 10 million Radio 2 listeners hear, read and love these stories.
