29th June, 2018

As this month comes to a close, we celebrated today’s feast day with a mass at Our Lady and St Vincent’s Church with Fr Shaun.  Well done to Luca, Luka, Maria, Samuel and Evie who read their bidding prayers so well and well done to Louise, Owen, Giovanna and David who played drums/percussion for the African response.

In Maths this week, we have looked at plotting polygons, and in RE have continued our work on discipleship and the children have written some very creative things on St Peter and Paul.  We have been practising for Sports Day which is on July 6th and a letter has gone home about this special day as we will be having a family picnic at lunchtime.

On Thursday many of the class attended the community mass at Nicholas Breakspear singing with the choir.  The children sang beautifully in front of 450 children and after eating lunch played a game of rounders against St Theresa’s School in Borehamwood.

Homework this weekend is Mathletics and SPAG. The spellings are the same as last week as many children have found the use of the prefix tricky to remember.

illogical     illegal   disqualify  impatient  illiterate  kind   unkind   illegible impractical  disobey

There seemed to be a problem with SPAG.com so I have reset the homework and apologise for this inconvenience.

Looking forward to seeing you all at the Strawberry Fayre on Sunday!

22nd June, 2018

IMG_1660IMG_1663This week has flown by!  We’ve been part of the audience watching the Year 6 production of Bugsy Malone on Tuesday which we really enjoyed and also the Guitar concert on Wednesday morning.  Well done to Elysia, Evie, Matthew A, Matthew D, Maks, Nick and Samuel on their wonderful performances.  Each of them has shown such progress from the start of the year. Congratulations! The children played their guitars with such confidence – the audience of children and family members clearly enjoyed the tunes played.

This week we have continued with our Maths learning – looking at Roman Numerals at the start of the week and investigating different types of triangles (Isosceles, Right-angled, Scalene).  It was great to hear the children discuss the various sizes of angles (obtuse, acute and right-angled).

In English we are writing up our Narratives using description to add more meaning and dialogue to bring the story alive.

In RE we have looked at the importance of the Martyrs and examined the Gospel for this Sunday’s Mass – The birth of John the Baptist.

In Drumming we have been preparing a special song to sing and perform at St Peter and Paul’s Mass on Friday.

Mass and Blessed Sacrament Procession

Well done to all our wonderful children who took part in our celebrations on Friday. Your reverence and participation throughout the whole service was exemplary; you  were a credit to your parents and to our school. Thank you to Father Shaun for leading us in worship and to all the teachers for preparing the children so well.

Carnival Time!

Thank you to all the children and parents who came to support our school today! The children looked fabulous in their poppy T shirts and the paper poppies and the crowns added a splash of colour to our walking float. I hope you all had a chance to visit the art exhibition and see some of the beautiful paintings on display. Well done to our football team for reaching the final today and playing so passionately for the school. We are all very proud of you! Thank you to all the staff for their hard work today. A special thanks goes to Miss Pringle for organising the football team, Mrs Theo for preparing the art work for the exhibition and Mrs McNamara and Mrs Joyce for driving car loads of equipment to and from school early this morning! A real team effort!

Week 7: 8th June

This week has been a busy one ending with a wonderful afternoon with Mass and the Blessed Sacrament procession to Our Lady and St Vincent’s church.
On top of the usual curriculum work, we have been preparing in our RE,  activities based around the Blessed Sacrament. During our class worship the children have been very reflective and have recognised the many words that are used such as Holy Communion, Eucharist, Blessed Sacrament, Tranformed, etc…

On Friday morning, the children have begun the first of their lessons for the remainder of the summer term in drumming. The sound of the drums showed its popularity with the children as they were able to create an unusually wide range of pitches and learnt that the sounds were created by striking different areas of the djembe skin with their hands.

Homework is:
English – to write up a newspaper article based on the mass and procession that they were part of.
Maths – log onto Mathletics
Spag – this will be the grammar homework for the next two weeks as it is a Grammar paper for the children to complete.

Have a lovely weekend.

Week 6: 25th May

This week, we started off with Grandparents Day and the school was buzzing with proud children excited that their grandparents were in their school!

The children had their weekly tennis lesson and have continued making their poppies for the carnival on Sunday 10th June.  They have made their stencils for their t-shirts which they will be using in their t-shirt workshop when they return to school after the half-term. In English we have continued to learn about the characters in The Runaways and in Maths the children have worked REALLY hard on developing their understanding of division. We even had assistance from some of the Year 6 boys which was a delight to watch!  Their interaction with the children meant that they could share their understanding of this difficult concept.

As it has been Spirituality Week, the children have spent time thinking about the importance of their family and God’s love for them.  The children met with their Year 2 prayer partners and received special prayers that the children had written for them. On Thursday, with the help of the Year 6 children, the class took part in various prayer stations which they enjoyed: ‘God’s Words’, the ‘Bubble Station’, ‘God’s Creation’ etc..were some of the stations they visited.

On Friday, following the Year 6’s assembly on The Family, we had an act of worship in the classroom in which some of our parents came and participated in.  Our focus was to create a class book that contains all the children’s family prayers written in the morning. It was a lovely ending to an uplifting week.

Have a lovely half-term.

Mrs McNamara and Miss Varga

Homework for the half-term is for the children to design the cover for the Summer Fayre.  Happy drawing!

Week 5: 18th May

This week, we have spent time preparing for our celebrations for Grand Parents Day.  The children have composed poems and prayers about their Nanny and Grand dads.  In RE, we have begun finding out about how Martyrs died for their Roman Catholic Faith and have learnt about the importance of the Tyburn Tree.  In Maths, we have been putting our knowledge of multiplication into context.  In English, the children have continued to learn more about ‘The Runaways’ and have become aware in  grammar about standard and non-standard forms of English.  In Art the children are making poppies for the Potters Bar Carnival.  They’re coming on really well.

Friday was our Red, White and Blue day and the children looked wonderful.  Thank you for assisting them in getting prepared for this special day.

We think of Maria who is preparing to receive her First Holy Communion on Sunday.

Have a lovely weekend.

Walk to School Week: 21st May – 25th May

We are encouraging pupils, parents or carers to swap four wheels for two feet and give walking a go this Walk to School Week 21st to 25th May.

As part of the challenge this year, pupils will be encouraged to wear the shoes that make them happiest – whether that is the brightest, jazziest or craziest shoes they own, to celebrate Living Streets’ Happy Shoesday on Tuesday 22nd May when we will be celebrating.

happy shoesday photo 1

Our message in school is that walking to school is a brilliant way to get active and healthy. It’s also a great opportunity for our children to learn vital road safety skills and make sure they’re alert and ready to learn at the start of a new day. Walk to School Week is part of National Walking Month organised by ‘Living Streets’.

This year Living Streets is urging families to pledge to walk to school via their website. Please bring a suggested donation of £1.00, to be sent to Living streets, the UK’s only charity for everyday walking. Living Streets say:

  •  parents who walk find the journey to school less stressful,
  •  petrol bill goes down, and pollution
  •  fewer traffic queues and parking issues
  • children perform better at school
  • Children & parents feel healthier and fitter.
  • Teachers report that those pupils who walk to school are more attentive once they reach their desks.

Over 400,000 pupils took part in Walk to School Week 2017 – and this year is shaping up to be even bigger.

Please join in and support this fundraising campaign!
