Bawdsey Manor Day 3

Well the day has been a busy one again with the children enjoying the lovely sunny weather!

Today, the activities have included canoeing, rifle shooting, buggy building and challenge course.

The children enjoyed their last ‘wet’ activity with their instructor in the beautiful lake in Bawdsey Manor this morning.  The lake has been newly constructed and our school was one of the first schools this week to experience this new activity on the itinerary.  The children were taught the importance of:  getting in and out of a canoe, holding the paddle, understanding steering, going straight, forward stroke and forward sweep. to name but a few! In the evening,  the children took part in ‘capture the flag’ activity and returned to their dorms via the Manor House and various tunnels that are built around it.  The view down to the beach is breathtaking….something we are going to explore more of over the next few days.

Thank you to Mrs Carey who has been so kind to message all parents via their group whats app the photos of our stay.

We hope that you enjoy gaining an insight into the many activities the children have been participating in over this week.

Watch out for Thursdays post!

Friday 12th May

Dear Parents

Here are some of the photos from our Coronation Celebrations last week.  Please click here.

This week has been busy with the children doing their SATs.  A huge well done to our class who have worked their socks off this week.  Well done to all of them!

They had a special surprise this afternoon….a special cake was made for them by Lisa and Emma who are part of our Herts Catering Staff which they enjoyed immensely.

They received their Year 6 hoodies is afternoon also – thank you to Violet’s mum and Dad and Finn’s mum for coming into school and handing these out.

Enjoy your weekend.

We look forward to  seeing you on Monday morning with suitcases in tow ready for the exciting week ahead in Bawdsey Manor!

Summer 1 Week 4

This week the children have been multiplying a two digit number by a one-digit number using regrouping and short multiplication. The children have worked hard to develop their skills and it is wonderful to see the children practising their timetables at home.

In English, we have started a new topic about adventure stories. We watched a video clip of an adventure story called ‘Taking Flight.’ Each day we have watched a little part of the clip and the children have been excited to watch the next part each day. We are learning about how adventure stories are page turners, they make you want to read more to find out what happens next. They have been writing expanded noun phrases and prepositional phrases to describe the characters. They have also been using a thesaurus to find synonyms for words to make their writing interesting.

In Religion, we listened to Luke’s recount of Pentecost and then rewrote the story in our own words. Then they made flames to represent the Holy Spirit using coloured paper.

In PE, the children continued their lessons of Tennis. On Wednesday they learn how to play rounders and develop their teamwork skills.

Eight children from our class took part in the first Year 3 challenge. Out of 200 schools, our two teams came 18th and 23rd. One team will compete in the final at the end of May. Well done to Emily, Brody, Jayden, Emilia, Jack F, Gabriella, Oliver and Mark!

Reception Week Beginning 8.5.23

Following the coronation of King Charles III on Saturday, the children were keen to talk about the different ways they had celebrated, and share what they had learnt or observed during the televised ceremony.  Reception continued their learning about the coronation throughout the week, making collages, carriages, castles and congratulation cards. In English, they enjoyed discussing and writing about what they would do if they were a king or queen for the day!

In their maths learning this week, Reception have been developing their spatial reasoning skills by exploring and representing patterns, making simple shape arrangements and creating exact replicas of 2D and 3D pictures and models made by their partner. They also had fun making and playing with tangrams!

International Pentecost Celebration

We hope you will be able to join us after school on Wednesday 24th May 3pm-5pm, for a very special international Pentecost celebration. Please see the newsletter for more information.

Have a lovely weekend,

The Reception Team

Summer 1 Week 4

This week the children have been revising 3D shape, the four operations and factions. They have worked hard to develop their skills and use the strategies they had been taught.

In English, the children have published their dragon writing and completed comprehension papers. I am extremely pleased with their writing and their inference and retrieval skills.

We have also enjoyed gardening and using the jungle gym.

Please read through the PowerPoint, on our Year 2 class page, regarding SATs.

Have a lovely weekend

Bawdsey Manor May 2023 Day 1

Well, we have arrived at Bawdsey Manor!

After having our packed lunches in the beautiful grounds of Bawdsey Manor, we headed off for a coastal walk. We spent the afternoon on the beach.  It was wonderful experience to add to our memories. The children enjoyed playing on the beach: skimming stones, building with the sand and collecting shells!!

The children visited Bawdsey Boathouse Cafe and were treated to an ice-cream/ice lolly…a welcomed treat after a fun time on the beach.

After a tour of Bawdsey Manor, the children have settled into their rooms!  We are now heading off for our dinner.

Our evening activity is going to be Cluedo in which the children are going to complete a series of challenges to solve a mystery.  I wonder if we are going to meet Professor Plum?!

5th May, 2023

Although the children have not been in school for the whole week, a lot has happened!

The children have continued with their revision sessions this week with great focus and concentration.  We are very proud of them for showing such maturity towards their learning. The Tuesday and Thursday maths enrichment sessions will be available during SATs week if your child would like to attend.  On Tuesday, we had a visit from an NHS mental health practitioner to talk to the class about dealing with exam stress.  She led a workshop on  assisting the children on ways to help them deal with the stress they may be feeling and the children were given a special card with steps to follow.

SATs 2023 – Tuesday 9th May – Friday 12th May
We want to reassure you that we will do everything we can to make the process as comfortable as possible for your children.
What can parents do to help their children prepare for SATs?
  1. Talk about the SATs and tell them not worry about them. We will also do this, too, but it makes a bigger impact if school and parents do this together. Children perform best when they are relaxed.
  2. Reading is a key part of primary education so keep encouraging daily reading whether your child reads on their own or if you read together. Discuss the books, the characters, the storylines and encourage your child to express their own opinions on the book. This is important to their long term development.
  3. Try to keep everything else running normally. So whether its sport, music lessons or Scouts and Guides; sticking to your normal routine of out of school activities demonstrates to your child that SATs are not the be and end all of year 6.
  4. During the SATs week, whilst keeping to normal timetable, try to avoid late nights, as children will find sitting the tests tiring.
  5. Stay positive. Many children enjoy taking the tests as they see it as a challenge and like the importance and the feeling of being special that SATs give year 6.

If you would like to look over the information re SATs that was discussed at the last parent meeting (Focus was: PGL Visit to Bawdsey Manor and SATs), go to the Year 6 Class Page and the powerpoint that was shown is under the tab labelled PGL.

On Wednesday, Year 6 took part in a skateboard session and were introduced to: the importance of staying safe when learning and practising skateboarding; finding their stance; pushing and learning to control direction and speed; improving speed control, direction control and balance techniques for turning.  We hope that this session has encouraged your child to look into this activity – Skateboarding is definitely a great workout! On Wednesday afternoon, Lorcan led a class liturgy encouraging the class to prepare for and pray about their SATs with a distinct focus on Jesus who is with us and gives us peace.

A special thank you to Macy who took these photos during the skateboarding session.

Today, we came to school dressed in red, white and blue to celebrate the upcoming coronation of King Charles III.  The children spent time finding out about King Charles III, learning a song about the coronation and many other things, finishing the afternoon off with decorating biscuits!

These photos will be uploaded for the next blog.

Have a lovely weekend!

Home learning:

Look over any learning aids that have been uploaded onto the class page that you have worked through in class.

On Mathletics, there are activities there for you to have a go at(choose the areas of maths you find the most challenging and answer questions on those).

Log onto TTRs and ensure your speed is improving….again, well done to those children who are constantly striving to increase the speed of answering a question.
