Friday 19th January 2024

Another week in Year 3 has flown by! In our English learning, we have been exploring the characters from The Finger Eater. We have written wanted posters, made predictions, written in role and used the evidence from the text to justify opinions. The children have been fantastic at using conjunctions to develop their ideas and they have been showing off their best handwriting to get a pen licence.

In Maths we have continued with our work on bar graphs learning to interpret graphs and solve multi-step problems.  In RE we have been learning about the story of Exodus which is about how God rescued the Israelites from slavery and made them His special people.  The children have enjoyed learning about this epic story and how Moses lead the people from Egypt.

On Wednesday we had our first swimming lesson of the term and it was a delight to see the joy on the children’s faces as they entered the pool at the Furzefield.  They followed the instructions from the swimming instructors and worked hard at doing front crawl and breast stroke.

Wishing you a wonderful weekend

As part of our new history topic, the children are learning about the Stone Age and we would like them to find out about Skara Brae, a stone-built Neolithic settlement, located on the Bay of Skaill on the west coast of Mainland, the largest island in the Orkneys. From their research, they are to design a poster (no bigger than A4 size) using text and pictures to inform the reader.

Year 4 had another busy week with the highlight being their  first swimming session on Wednesday.

In English, the class focused on prepositions as part of their expanded noun phrases before writing some extended paragraphs describing beasts from Cressida Cowell’s book How to train your dragon. They also designed their own magnificent creatures, considering key parts such as the tail, the wings, etc.

In Maths, they moved on to conversion of weight and capacity before reading some scales using a range of increments. The class will move onto fractions next.

In RE, the children retold the Exodus story, identifying main characters and settings, whilst also looking at a timeline with key dates from their History learning and maps to place the story in context.

In Science, the children tested different substances to answer the question: which liquid travels the fastest? They made connections between speed and density, also looking at the particles within the substances. The experiment gave opportunity to the class to consider aspects of a fair test to be kept the same and allowed them to record results independently and draw conclusions from the data collected.

Just a reminder that the Year 4 Mental Health workshops will start next week Thursday.

I hope you have a lovely weekend,

Ms Varga

Spring 1 Week 2

This week our learning has been based around Goldilocks and the Three Bears. The children have been acting out the story, writing sorry letters from Goldilocks, writing speech bubbles and making wanted posters. We have also been making, mixing and eating porridge. Using their wonderful design skills, children have been making new chairs for baby bear. On Thursday, we found that Goldilocks had been in our class, eaten the porridge and broken a chair.

In Maths, we have been finding one more and one less using a variety of resources and playing games. Next we learnt to make the number 5 in lots of different ways.

In Religion, we thought carefully about the star that the Three Kings followed. We made telescopes to look at stars outside and the drew pictures of themselves in a star and described why they are stars.

In Ten Ten, we talked about feelings. We  showed the different expressions on our faces and discussed what they show about how we are feeling. The children explainedwhat they could do to make others happy when they were sad.

In Phonics, we learnt the sounds y, z, zz and q. Please complete phonics home learning for this week and remember to write in your writing books. Please encourage the children to sound out the words using the sounds they know.

Our class assembly is on Friday 2nd February at 9.15am. If your child has taken home a reading, please help them to learn it.

Have a lovely weekend.

Happy New Year and welcome back!

It has been lovely to see the children again this week after the Christmas break and to hear some of their stories from the holidays!

In RE, we have been thinking about the meaning of the Feast of the Epiphany, and then began our new topic for this half term, which is about Exodus and Passover. In Maths, we were multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1000, whilst in History, the children began a new topic with Mrs Heymoz (who will be teaching the children on Tuesday afternoons this half term) on Ancient Greece.

In D&T, we began our learning about mechanical systems, for which the premise is that the WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature) want to get people interested in caring for the endangered/vulnerable animals which live on our planet but do not believe it is ethically correct to put live animals on display. Instead, a way to show the animals could be to use working, moving models. Thus the design brief that we have been given is to create a collection of appealing moving mechanical animal models that will captivate people’s interest. In order to research what to aim for in our models, we watched clips of different endangered animals and focused on what they look like, how they move and what their natural habitats are.

PE this half term will continue to be on Wednesday and Thursday. Wednesdays will be gymnastics and Thursdays will be health-related fitness. Here are some snaps from Thursday’s circuit training session!

Spring 1 week 1 w.b 08.01.24

Happy New Year! It has been lovely seeing all of the children again and hearing all about the amazing things they got up to over Christmas.

The children started the week celebrating The feast Of  The Epiphany. The children learned how the The Epiphany is celebrated on the 6th January and is a special part of Christmas and the story of Jesus’ birth. It marks the day when the Three Kings followed a star to visit the son of God and the first time that Jesus was revealed to the World. Year One wore their special crowns to assembly and took part in a special circle time where we discussed what gifts we could bring this year to our school, family and friends. We had some lovely suggestions such as the gifts of kindness, friendship and charity as well as looking out for people who may need our help. The children wrote down their gifts they would like to offer and shared their offerings with the class.

In Maths this week the children have been identifying the whole amount and the parts. They have used their knowledge of the part whole model to explore different quantities and also how it might be adapted depending on the question that is being asked.

In their Seasonal Learning this week the children have been thinking about Spring being the next season to come. There were some great discussions about what reminds them of Spring and all the lovely things they have to look forward to. A particular favourite was Easter! The children shared their ideas with some keywords and then went off to complete some independent writing in their books.

In Art the children explored what watercolour can do. They used both primary colours and secondary colours in their exploration, experimenting with accidental and purposeful colour mixing. The experimented using techniques such as wash, wet on dry, wet on wet, and mark making. The also looked at an Artist called Emma Burleigh as inspiration.

PE – Please note PE days are now on Tuesday and Friday, so please send your child in wearing their PE kit on both of these days.

Week Beginning 8.1.24

Happy New Year! I hope you all had a joyful Christmas and a nice break from the everyday routines.

It was so lovely to welcome the Year 6 children back to school on Monday; they were all very excited to be back with their friends and the rest of the school community!

The class have started the new term with a great attitude towards their learning. They began the week with a special assembly about the Feast of the Epiphany, where they got to wear their celebratory crowns, along with the rest of the school. They then created some beautiful Epiphany art work, and wrote about the gifts that they would give the baby Jesus.

In Maths, Year 6 have been getting to grips with percentages- finding equivalent fractions and decimals, and working out the percentages of numbers. They have also been applying their learning to real life problem solving.

In, English, the children have been learning how to create tension and suspense in their writing, by using short, snappy sentences and onomatopoeia. As well as this, they have been learning how to use figurative language to convey mood and atmosphere in their narratives.

The children had lots of fun in their music lesson this week; their new unit began with an exciting session on body percussion. At the end of the session, the groups each performed their own rendition of Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star using their body parts!

The PE focus for this term is gymnastics. In today’s lesson, the children explored different ways of jumping and balancing. They enjoyed putting together a sequence of actions and performing them to their peers, at the end of the lesson. Please note, from next week, Year 6 will be having PE on a Monday and a Friday.

It was lovely to see the Year 6 children with their Reception reading partners again this afternoon. The younger children were VERY excited to see their partners!

As explained in class, home learning is as follows:

  • Spelling Shed- spellings and a SPaG activity focussing on identifying antonyms and synonyms
  • SPaG.com- subject-verb agreement
  • Mathletics- percentages
  • Daily reading

Please find attached here a letter about the RHE (Relationship and Health Education) curriculum that will be covered this term in Year 6 following our Life to the Full Programme.  If you have any queries about the sessions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Reminder– I will be taking everyone’s reading record in on Friday morning. Please ensure you have them in school Year 6!

Have a wonderful weekend,

Ms Pemberton

Spring 1 Week 1

Happy New Year! We hope you had a wonderful Christmas. The children were excited to tell us about their holidays.

This week we started learning the Phase 3 sounds. Please complete the home learning each evening to practise saying and writing the new sound. This week we learnt j, v, w and x. If you did not complete the home learning this week, please practise over the weekend. On your child’s reading day they were given a writing book. In this book the children can write about whatever they want. There are more details in the front of the book. Send this back on their reading day so they can share their writing with an adult.

It was the feast of the Epiphany on Sunday. This week the children listened to the story of the Three Kings visiting baby Jesus. The children made kings, painted pictures of the three kings, made stars and wrote about the story. On Friday we made star biscuits to remind us that the Three Kings followed a star.

To begin the new year, the children thought about what they wanted to do this year to help to build a better world. They wrote these on stars and decorated them beautifully to go on display in the classroom. Children are already showing their promises in class.

We listened to the story What’s the Time Mr Wolf? Then we talked about what we do each day and the order we do things in. The children sequenced pictures of some of the things we do. Next the children made a list of activities they do each day and what they do during the day and at night.

When it started to snow the children were very excited and filled some pots with snow. Then they left out different containers of water, hoping to find ice the next day! On Friday they thought about ways to keep warm so they built a campfire in the playground.

In Maths, we learnt about the number 0 and went on a hunt around our playground looking for things that showed 0. We found wheels with nothing in them, we compared two crates with some bricks and no bricks, some chairs with something on and nothing on.  Then we looked at subitising- seeing a number without counting. For example the dots on a dice. Then we learnt about different ways of representing numbers. We showed these using pegs, drawings and natural objects.

In our outdoor shed we have a hairdressers. The children had great fun acting out being a hairdresser or going to the hairdressers. They demonstrated great speaking and listening skills.

In our Ten Ten lesson we thought about what we liked, loved and disliked. We discussed how we all like and dislike different things from our friends but that is fine because we are all different but we are all special. The children drew what they liked and what they loved. Click on here to find out more about our Ten Ten topic as part of our RHE (Relationships and Health Education) Curriculum.  If you have any trouble with the attached document please right click your mouse/cursor and click on ‘save as’. Once downloaded click ‘keep’ and the document will show.

Please send some tissues in as we need lots a this time of year.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Happy New Year!

It has been lovely to welcome the children back to school this week and hear about their amazing Christmas holidays.

In class, we began the week by preparing for a special Epiphany assembly. We made beautiful crowns decorated with relevant words and scenes from the Gospel and thought about the meaning of the Epiphany (The showing of Jesus to the world and the Three Kings).  The children reflected on the Christmas story and the important  guests who went to Bethlehem to visit the baby Jesus.  They also wrote paragraphs to explain the symbolic meaning of the gifts of Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh and reflected on the gifts they will bring to their families and wider communities in this new year.

In Maths, the class moved on to reading scales with different increments to measure weight accurately before converting between units of measurement, such as grams and kilograms. In English, we started our first non-fiction unit (a non-chronological report) by reading extracts from Cressida Cowell’s popular book: How to train your dragon. So far, we looked at note taking techniques as well as expanded noun phrases and prepositions. We also revised writing in the first person and the correct use of the past tense.

In Science, the children classified common materials and substances according to their state (liquid, gas and solid), thinking about the position of particles within these. In PE, we started our next unit of Dance and put together a simple routine with a Roman theme, using motifs such as marching, galloping, riding a chariot, etc. In Computing, the class moved on to programming and learnt simple codes to command their turtle in Logo whilst in RE, the children reflected on the literary form Epic and identified key features of that as a way to prepare for their focus for the term, the story of the Passover.

Please remember this term our PE days will be Monday and Wednesday. On Mondays, we are mainly in the hall working on our unit of Dance, whilst on Wednesdays (starting 17th January) the class will go swimming and will need the appropriate kit for that too.

Spring 1

Happy New Year and welcome back. I hope you had a lovely Christmas break.

In Year 2, we began our week by learning about Epiphany and made crowns and kings. We also learnt the meaning of Epiphany (showing) and that Epiphany is when the three wise men arrived at the stable with their gifts of Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh.

We have enjoyed reading the picture book ‘The panet in a pickle jar’ written by Martin Stanev and discussing what special things we would save in our own jars. Our writing focus has been to use expanded noun phrases, full stops and capital letters correctly.

In Maths, we have been finding halves, thirds and quarters of shapes and amounts.

We have been comparing Antarctica and the Arctic and Geography, looking at their climates, animals and physical features.

In PE, we have been using our problem solving and listening skills to solve problems. I have been very impressed with the children’s team work.

Have a lovely weekend.

Happy New Year!

It has been lovely to welcome the children back to school this week and hear about their Christmas holidays.

The children began this week preparing for a special Epiphany assembly led by Mrs Heymoz.  During our first act of worship  of the new year in class, the children thought about the meaning of Epiphany (The manifestation of Christ).  The children reflected on the Christmas story and the important  guests who went to Bethlehem to visit the baby Jesus.  They learned that the Epiphany is when the three wise men arrived at the stable with their gifts of Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh.

Click here to see the beautiful crowns they designed for the special assembly.

As we begin this new Spring Term, you can click on the curriculum overview tab (Go to the class page) to see the curriculum plan for this term.  A letter about your child’s reading day etc..has been given to your child to take home to you.  Please note that your child’s reading log and book will be sent home next week.  We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support in reading regularly with your child at home. It is such an essential part of their development as a reader, and you play a crucial role in nurturing their love of reading.

This week, the children started a new maths unit on statistics, learning to interpret and present data using bar charts.  They have worked extremely hard on this area of maths and they will be encouraged to retrieve information from bar charts, interpret and infer.  Also this week the children started their new history topic on Prehistoric Britain and in computing they were introduced to a new programming environment: Scratch.

In English, the children have begun our narrative unit based on Dick King Smith’s ‘The Finger Eater’. They created some performances from chapter one about the troll.

Our science learning is now all about rocks. We have learnt about the three main types (igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary)and how they are created.

Next Wednesday is our first swimming session and this is one of our PE sessions.  The remaining session is now on a Thursday instead of a Friday.
