Spring Term – Week 3

Year One have had another busy week beginning with an introduction to their new Science topic on ‘Materials.’ We worked as a class talking about what is an object and what is a material. We brainstormed our ideas and wrote down the different materials we could see in our classroom. On Wednesday, we went on a material hunt in the classroom and categorised our objects into the correct groups. This gave us lots of interesting things to note! We recognised that we had no glass items and talked about the reasons why. Some objects were made of two or more materials and we discussed how we could show this in our sets. We are looking forward to finding out more about materials and their properties, over the coming weeks.

In Maths, we have been learning about positional language and ordinal numbers. We used our attendance poodle to demonstrate positional language, by giving each other instructions on where to put her in the classroom. The children were very excited to give each other instructions, using positional language such as: on top of, under, next to, beside, in between and inside. The children went on to play this game with their friends throughout the day.

This story is about celebrating everyone’s uniqueness and it has taught us that anything is possible if we work together and include everyone.

In Science we have investigated the affects of exercise on our bodies, while in PE we have been learning how to play hockey.

In Maths, we have started a unit on statistics. The children and been busy sorting, collecting and interpreting information.

Our new Computing topic is digital photography. This week the children have been learning how to take photos in different formats.

We have also enjoyed searching the school gardens for signs of Spring and observing a bunch of daffodils bloom in class.

Year 5 – 26/01/23

It’s the end of another week! Here’s what we got up to in Year 5:

🔬 Science: We experimented with parachutes of different sizes to investigate how surface area affects air resistance.

📚 English: We practiced varying our sentence openers and crafted an eerie description of The Watchtower. Exploring the past perfect tense added depth to our writing, and it was interesting to look at the effect it had.

➕ Maths: We tackled long multiplication, including solving word problems involving 4-digit by 2-digit numbers.

📖 RE: We dove further into the story of Passover in Exodus, discussing its significance, purpose, and the beliefs the Israelites would have derived from it.

🏋️‍♂️ PE: In gymnastics, we perfected our rolls in gymnastics on Wednesday and engaged in circuit training on Thursday to enhance our fitness levels. Sweat and determination were our companions!

💻 Computing: We explored smart systems through the lens of smart lockers, as part of our topic on computer systems.

👦 TenTen: We spilt into two groups (boys and girls) to learn about the changes that boys experience during puberty, and allowed the children to ask questions that they had, anonymously if they wished.

🎵 Music: Our exploration of Gospel music continued, focusing on the importance of good articulation when singing, and listening to how the musical genre has evolved through the years. We all enjoyed tapping our feet and feeling the soul that was present in all the music that we discussed.

Friday 26th January 2024

In English, we read to the end of our class text to find out what became of the finger eater after Gudrun put her plan into place. The children wrote letters in role, imagining that they had come into contact with the troll in his new toothless state.

In Maths we have been looking at building arrays to develop or times table knowledge and this week our focus has been on the 3 times tables.  Click here to listen to the song that is helping us to do so!

In Science, we improved our understanding of the rock cycle through sweets. By chopping them to make sediment and then putting them under various pressures and heats, we were able to see how each rock is formed.

The children made some wonderful freezeframes in RE, where they showed the events of Exodus when Moses and his brother gave instructions.

In Computing we have continued with our programming work using Scratch and have started to learn about how to start a program in different ways and create a sequence of connected commands.

Friday, 26th January 2024

The children in Year 4 have been busy again this week!

We have moved onto the topic of fractions in maths revising our prior learning of unit and non-unit fractions of sets, shapes and amounts. We have been recognising fractions that are equal and have ordered and compared fractions by placing them onto a number line and representing them with bar models.

In English, we have listened to David Attenborough describing a monitor lizard to get a feel for the formal style of writing we will need to have to write our non-chronological report and also collected technical vocabulary to aid us with this.  We used these technical words to improve an existing paragraph, experimenting with formal phrases and factual details. I feel that the children are now ready to plan their writing and should be producing their reports next week.

In RE, the class focused on the Passover chapter of the Exodus story, commenting on the different literary forms within (instructions and narrative) whilst also gathering information about the characters, settings and summarising the main points of each part.

In PE the children’s work in dance started with them extending their basic motif into a 20 count routine, involving different pathways and levels.

In Art, we started our new topic of ‘Still Life’ by exploring Paul Cezanne’s life and work, discussing his choice of themes, colours, technique and texture. We looked at how he experimented with light and composition and later attempted to mimic his work by testing 3 different media: pencil, poster paint and acrylic.

During our first Mental Health workshop on Thursday, the children revised their understanding of emotions trying to define what they are and also listing the ones they know. They made some links between those emotions and life experiences before participating in a ‘Circle of Trust’ activity, compiling a rich list of adults and children around them who they can turn to or share all of their emotions with.

Just a reminder: Next Thursday, the choir is out, participating in the Young Voices Choir evening at the Wembley! They will need a packed supper  but will eat lunch in school as usual.

English planning The children will write a non-chronological report about a dragon they have designed in class inspired by our class book ‘How to train your dragon’ by Cressida Cowell. As a preparation for their final writing piece, I would like the children to create an idea/word bank that they can use, including information about the dragon’s appearance, behaviour, weaponry, origins, diet, habitat and use.

I am not expecting a report written in full sentences! I would like the children to take some time to think through their ideas and have a chat with an adult about them so they can filter through and finalise the details of their dragon.

Please see attached a sheet that might be helpful for discussion and recording:

Spring 1 Week 3

Our theme this week was The Three Little Pigs. The children have been drawing story maps, making pig faces, writing about different tricks the pigs could have done, writing letters and acting out the story. They demonstrated wonderful sticking and joining skills when using boxes to make their own houses. They have also been scientists, designing and making houses out of a variety of materials and resources to test whether it could be blown down. Outside, the children have been builders, they have been building houses using lego and bricks and cementing it together using soap.

In Phonics, we have learnt the sounds ch, sh, th and ng. The children have been reading and writing words with this digraphs in. Please continue to practise at home.

In Maths, we made the number 4 and 5 using objects and making cherry models.

Then we learnt about measuring the weight of objects and finding the capacity of containers. The children have been predicting, comparing and measuring the weight and capacity.

This week we started to learn the Our Father and spoke about how this prayer encourages us to forgive each other. We thought about times when we need to say sorry and ask for forgiveness.

If your child has been given a reading for assembly, please practise with them.

Home Learning – Please complete the birdwatch activity. Children can bring their tally in to share with the class.  See attached Birdwatch leaflet

Next Friday is our class assembly at 9.15am. If your child has a sibling who is in the Young Voices Concert, could the Reception children be in at normal time so they do not miss our assembly.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Year 6 Week Beginning 26.1.24

This morning, Amelie, Julia and Isabella led the class in a beautiful whole class act of worship on the theme of ‘Peace’.

In response to the bible reading that they carefully selected, the children thought about what peace means to them and reflected on when they last felt this way. Well done girls!

In RE this week, Year 6 have continued their learning about the Exodus story.

In order to deepen their understanding of the significance of the Passover in the story, the class had lots of fun acting it out, before writing about it. They also explored the symbolism found within  Exodus and identified the values, beliefs and attitudes within it too. Year 6 then reflected on how those values, beliefs and attitudes are relevant in their own lives today.

In Maths, Year 6 have been finding the areas of different sized  triangles and parallelograms and in English, they have been writing the first drafts of their Alma narratives, which they enjoyed sharing!

In Science this week, Year 6 have been learning how living things have changed over time and that fossils provide information about living things that inhabited the Earth millions of years ago. They also enjoyed some hands-on learning, exploring the properties of real fossils!

Spring 1 week 2 w.b. 15.01.24

It’s been another very busy week in Year 1!

In English the children have been looking at Winter Poetry and created some lovely poems of their own. They have read, rehearsed and responded to poems and also used appropriate vocabulary to describe Winter. They have made list words to describe details and assembled information correctly to create their independent writing.

In Art the children have continued their work on watercolour with a particular focus on the work of Paul Klee and Emma Burleigh. The children discussed the work of these artists looking at the colour, detail, line,  and shape that were used and then went on to create their own interpretation of the work.

In PE this term we will be taking part in Dance lessons. Our Dance unit  this term is called  ‘Animals’  and we began this unit with the children by making a mind map of the different movements of animals and how we can perform actions to represent the different types of animals we know.  We listened to a variety of Animal sounds and talked about how various animals move according to their bodies eg. snake/slithering, bird/flapping wings  etc.. The children were very enthusiastic in demonstrating to the class their own ideas and actions  We have started putting together a Dance to perform to the song ‘I’m the King of The Swingers’ from the Jungle book.  We will be adding to our sequences of actions as the weeks progress.

In Science we completed our topic of Animals and Humans finishing with making class pictograms, We talked about our similarities and differences and made class Pictograms of eye colour and hair colour. We were surprised to discover that there were no children in our class who have green eyes! Brown hair and Brown eyes were the most common features found and we decided to test the hypothesis that if you have brown hair do you have brown eyes too? We proved this was incorrect as we discovered half the class with brown hair had brown eyes but the other half of the class with brown hair had blue eyes. Next week we will introduce our new Science unit Materials,

In RE we are learning about The Exodus. The story of The Exodus is known as an Epic story and we have been learning about what features help to make an Epic story! We talked about Superheroes we know and what superhero powers they are known to possess. We discussed what does it actually mean to be a hero and heroic events that can occur in real life.

Home Learning – due Friday.
