The children in Year 4 completed revision activities in Maths and English this week, applying all learnt strategies when calculating and also thinking about grammar and punctuation when uplevelling sentences.

They also finished their Coronation Art pieces and started on their ‘crown embroidery’ project.

In music, the children came up with percussion ‘call and response’ patterns in pairs and later performed as a group.

In Tennis, they carried on practicing their different hits whilst in RE they looked at the story of Pentecost.

Next week Thursday, the children will walk down to the Church to attend Mass at 10am, please send them in with a coat that has a hood.

Please also check the information about our International Pentecost Celebration: It would be amazing if you could participate and we could all celebrate together. Please let me or the office know if you can help out.

Have a lovely weekend,

Reception Week Beginning 8.5.23

Following the coronation of King Charles III on Saturday, the children were keen to talk about the different ways they had celebrated, and share what they had learnt or observed during the televised ceremony.  Reception continued their learning about the coronation throughout the week, making collages, carriages, castles and congratulation cards. In English, they enjoyed discussing and writing about what they would do if they were a king or queen for the day!

In their maths learning this week, Reception have been developing their spatial reasoning skills by exploring and representing patterns, making simple shape arrangements and creating exact replicas of 2D and 3D pictures and models made by their partner. They also had fun making and playing with tangrams!

International Pentecost Celebration

We hope you will be able to join us after school on Wednesday 24th May 3pm-5pm, for a very special international Pentecost celebration. Please see the newsletter for more information.

Have a lovely weekend,

Summer 1 Week 4

This week the children have been revising 3D shape, the four operations and factions. They have worked hard to develop their skills and use the strategies they had been taught.

In English, the children have published their dragon writing and completed comprehension papers. I am extremely pleased with their writing and their inference and retrieval skills.

We have also enjoyed gardening and using the jungle gym.

Please read through the PowerPoint, on our Year 2 class page, regarding SATs.

Bawdsey Manor May 2023 Day 1

Well, we have arrived at Bawdsey Manor!

After having our packed lunches in the beautiful grounds of Bawdsey Manor, we headed off for a coastal walk. We spent the afternoon on the beach.  It was wonderful experience to add to our memories. The children enjoyed playing on the beach: skimming stones, building with the sand and collecting shells!!

The children visited Bawdsey Boathouse Cafe and were treated to an ice-cream/ice lolly…a welcomed treat after a fun time on the beach.

After a tour of Bawdsey Manor, the children have settled into their rooms!  We are now heading off for our dinner.

Our evening activity is going to be Cluedo in which the children are going to complete a series of challenges to solve a mystery.  I wonder if we are going to meet Professor Plum?!

5th May, 2023

Although the children have not been in school for the whole week, a lot has happened!

The children have continued with their revision sessions this week with great focus and concentration.  We are very proud of them for showing such maturity towards their learning. The Tuesday and Thursday maths enrichment sessions will be available during SATs week if your child would like to attend.  On Tuesday, we had a visit from an NHS mental health practitioner to talk to the class about dealing with exam stress.  She led a workshop on  assisting the children on ways to help them deal with the stress they may be feeling and the children were given a special card with steps to follow.

SATs 2023 – Tuesday 9th May – Friday 12th May
We want to reassure you that we will do everything we can to make the process as comfortable as possible for your children.
What can parents do to help their children prepare for SATs?
  1. Talk about the SATs and tell them not worry about them. We will also do this, too, but it makes a bigger impact if school and parents do this together. Children perform best when they are relaxed.
  2. Reading is a key part of primary education so keep encouraging daily reading whether your child reads on their own or if you read together. Discuss the books, the characters, the storylines and encourage your child to express their own opinions on the book. This is important to their long term development.
  3. Try to keep everything else running normally. So whether its sport, music lessons or Scouts and Guides; sticking to your normal routine of out of school activities demonstrates to your child that SATs are not the be and end all of year 6.
  4. During the SATs week, whilst keeping to normal timetable, try to avoid late nights, as children will find sitting the tests tiring.
  5. Stay positive. Many children enjoy taking the tests as they see it as a challenge and like the importance and the feeling of being special that SATs give year 6.

If you would like to look over the information re SATs that was discussed at the last parent meeting (Focus was: PGL Visit to Bawdsey Manor and SATs), go to the Year 6 Class Page and the powerpoint that was shown is under the tab labelled PGL.

On Wednesday, Year 6 took part in a skateboard session and were introduced to: the importance of staying safe when learning and practising skateboarding; finding their stance; pushing and learning to control direction and speed; improving speed control, direction control and balance techniques for turning.  We hope that this session has encouraged your child to look into this activity – Skateboarding is definitely a great workout! On Wednesday afternoon, Lorcan led a class liturgy encouraging the class to prepare for and pray about their SATs with a distinct focus on Jesus who is with us and gives us peace.

A special thank you to Macy who took these photos during the skateboarding session.

Today, we came to school dressed in red, white and blue to celebrate the upcoming coronation of King Charles III.  The children spent time finding out about King Charles III, learning a song about the coronation and many other things, finishing the afternoon off with decorating biscuits!

These photos will be uploaded for the next blog.

Have a lovely weekend!

Home learning:

Look over any learning aids that have been uploaded onto the class page that you have worked through in class.

On Mathletics, there are activities there for you to have a go at(choose the areas of maths you find the most challenging and answer questions on those).

Log onto TTRs and ensure your speed is improving….again, well done to those children who are constantly striving to increase the speed of answering a question.

Year 5 – 05/05/23

Coronation Fever is definitely upon us! This week, we enjoyed finding out about the royal line of succession, what King Charles’ interests are and how tomorrow’s Coronation will proceed. We discussed what the King’s priorities might be then wrote letters to him. We also made nature Coronation collages to link with His Majesty’s love for the environment.

We also decorated Coronation cookies with the Year 1s, before coming outside and celebrating with the whole school.

Aside from celebrating and learning about the Coronation, we also had a skateboarding session on Wednesday, which was enjoyed by all! The children learnt to jump on and off the skateboard, how to reposition their feet whilst moving on the board, and how to turn the board beneath them! Well done to everyone for giving it a go and especially to those that fell off and got straight back on again! Thank you to Miss Pringle for organising this.

Enjoy the Bank Holiday weekend and I’m looking forward to hearing all about how you celebrated the Coronation when I see you on Tuesday! 👑

Friday, 5th May 2023

Although it has been a short week, Year 4 had lots of opportunities to have fun!

On Wednesday, they participated in a skateboarding workshop, making their first jumps and zooming around the playground. Special thank you to Gene, who later showed off his amazing skills to the whole school! Very well done, Gene!

Later in the day, the class took part in yet another percussion workshop, practicing their ‘call and response’ skills.

During the rest of the week, the children completed learning centered around the Coronation. We looked at the concept of a constitutional monarchy, understanding the role of the King and the Parliament. We looked at King Charles III’s life and learnt the most important events of the Coronation. The class also used atlases and maps to locate countries of the Commonwealth and researched the role of the King in those. We spent some time looking at the Prince’s Trust as His Majesty’s most important charity and started working on some Coronation themed art, as well.

On Friday, the children enjoyed another Coronation inspired day, participating in an assembly and having a school party in the afternoon!

I hope you have a lovely long-weekend enjoying some of the celebrations and festivities!

In English, the children have been learning about explanation texts. Their final piece for this unit will be an explanation text describing in detail how an invention of their own works, what parts it has and a sequenced guide using specific fronted adverbials, technical words and causal conjunctions.

This week, I would like the children to ‘design’ an invention and create a detailed, labelled diagram of it, that they can present in class and which they can use as a foundation for their writing. In class, we have already looked at inventions and grouped them according to ‘themes’. Inventions that help us multitask, inventions that allow things to work remotely and inventions that are small or foldable, therefore saving space.

The inventions need to be realistic but they can come from the children’s imagination. E.g.: a football kit cleaning station (checks the ball and pumps it up whilst simultaneously cleaning the boots and washing the kit) In class, we used Wallace and Gromit’s cracking contraptions as a starting point. Please see the link below for short video clips of those: https://wallaceandgromit.com/films/cracking-contraptions/

Please note, I am expecting an A4 sized detailed diagram, not written explanations! The children need to design an invention that they can later describe and explain in detail. Please be prepared to present these on Tuesday, 9th May 2023.

Summer 1 Week 3

The children took part in a skateboard workshop on Wednesday. I was impressed with how quickly they learnt new skills.

In Maths the children have been learning to multiply two digit numbers by a one-digit number by regrouping.

In preparation for the Coronation, the children learnt about King Charles III and made a fact file about his life. They learnt about his role as the king and the jobs he would do. Then the children made clay crowns and painted them. They look fantastic!

Well done to the children who sent in their home learning in on King Charles! It was great to hear the facts they had learnt. If you did not complete it, please send it in next week.

On Friday we had a wonderful celebration for the coronation. We decorated biscuits, ate ice lollies, sang songs and had a party. The children look great dressed in red, white and blue.
