Reception 24.3.23

It has been a very busy past couple of weeks for Reception.

During Science Week, they had lots of exciting visits throughout the week. Thank you in particular to Luca’s mum, who taught the children about microbiology!

The children have been very busy in their maths learning, exploring the composition of 9 and 10. In English, the class have been doing lots of reading and writing based on the The Enormous Turnip and The Little Red Hen.

On Monday, the class are going to go for a walk with their Year 6 reading partners on the field next to the school. Please ensure that your child has wellington boots in school, or else a change of footwear. Thank you.

Have a wonderful weekend,

The Reception Team

Spring 2 Week 5

This week the children have finished writing their speeches to persuade people to stop using plastic. The children used a range of persuasive language and thought carefully about the phrases they were using to encourage people to change. The children demonstrated a wonderful understanding about how we can work together to build a better world.

In Maths the children have been finding fractions of amounts. They used resources and drew bar models to help them solve problems.

In Geography, the children were learning about the consequences of an earthquake. They looked closely at world maps and labelled the continents.

In Religion, the children have been learning about the events during Holy Week and retold the story of Palm Sunday.

Ruth’s mum in Year 2 came in to talk to us about her job as a nurse. The children asked fantastic questions and learnt the importance of Science in her job.

This week in Year 4, the children completed their final narratives, based on our class book, ‘Ice Palace’, retelling a particular scene from a different character’s point of view. I am very pleased with their efforts; we have some beautiful descriptions and stories that create an atmosphere.

In Maths, we further consolidated calculating fractions of quantities; representing problems using bar models and solving missing number fraction problems. Next week, we are moving on to adding and subtracting fractions with the same denominator beyond 1 whole.

In Science, we welcomed Mrs Ennis, who gave us a talk about how she is using Science in her job, before moving on to our current topic ‘States of Matter’. We carried out some practical investigations to identify melting points and used our data to present it on a graph.

We also participated in a music assembly, accompanied by year 5, where we were introduced to some of the services provided by the Hertfordshire Music Centre, before doing some singing and dancing. Very enjoyable session!

The children also practiced their hymns both in class and in church for the Way of the Cross Service which is on Tuesday 28th March at 7pm at Our Lady and St Vincent’s Church.

Next Monday, we are planning to take the children on a walk and will require them to bring a change of footwear for this (they may get muddy!) and their coat.

Have a lovely weekend,

Ms Varga

Year 5 – 24/03/23

On Wednesday, we were lucky enough to have a science lesson with Mr Friedlander from Dame Alice Owen School. He showed us how to extract DNA from kiwi fruits, which was fascinating!

We also took part in a fun music assembly led by the head of Potters Bar Music Centre, which focussed on rhythm and keeping in time.

In PE this week, we continued our Dances through the Decades unit with 50s and 60s dance moves. There was some brilliant dances and routines, with some fantastic twisting going on!

Here’s the tutorial we used to help us learn the moves. Have another practice at home!

Year 5 – 17/03/23 – Science Week

This year’s British Science Week theme was Connections, so we spent the week exploring lots of different ways that things are connected in science. We spent much of Monday designing and engineering ‘vehicles’ using forces to send a message. Some pairs increased the air resistance of their vehicle; some engineered ziplines and ramps to take advantage of gravity; some created vehicles with wheels with as little friction as possible. There was so much invention and creativity involved, and we had a lot of fun testing them out!

This afternoon, the children had their final Science Week challenge: Set up a sequence of linked events so that initial movement leads to another then another. They displayed great teamwork and innovation!

We also welcomed parents into the school to hear about how they use science in their professions. Thank you to Naomi and Julia’s mum for speaking to us about mental health, to Christoph’s parents for their session about their jobs as vets, and to Mrs Wilson for showing us a range of reptiles and even a couple of dead tarantulas!

Please continue to practise last week’s spellings, and to revise the song words for The Way of the Cross (link to blog post with lyrics and youtube links can be found here).

Have a lovely weekend and a particularly happy Mothers’ Day! 💐

Friday 17th March 2023

We have been incredibly lucky this week as we were visited by 5 Pope Paul parents to support our science learning. On Monday, Julia and Naomi’s mum (Year 5) spoke to us about her role as a mental health nurse. Year 6 asked some very interesting questions about some of the disorders mentioned. On Tuesday, Christoph and Anna’s parents (Year 5 and 2) came to talk to us about their roles as veterinarians. They quizzed us on what skulls belonged to which animals and taught us about what they look for when viewing blood under microscopes. To finish the week, Luca’s mum (Reception) described what she did as a microbiologist, giving us great information about bacteria and antibiotics. Jamie and Charlie’s mum ( Year 4 and 3) also visited with her array of animals. Despite being unsure at first, Year 6 got stuck in, handling the scaly creatures! Photos to follow…

Have a great weekend
