We have been out enjoying the sun this week, with lots of outdoor science learning. The children investigated how different exercise affected their heart rate, and also made the most of the allotment area and investigated “What has been eating our plants?”

In PE, we have been getting our sweat on and improving our stamina and endurance, whilst in this week’s Wellbeing session we took the time to take notice and appreciate the beauty of our school grounds.

It really has been a lovely week and, as always, well done and thank you for your hard work Year 6.

Year 6 – 11/09/20

This morning, Year 6 were lucky enough to go on retreat at the church. The morning began with Mass, continued with a reflection led by Fr Shaun on the Beatitudes, and was followed by group work in their houses in which they discussed the leadership qualities of their house saints and came up with ways that they could impart these qualities and values in their own leadership roles back at Pope Paul. The beautiful way in which the children conducted themselves during the Mass, combined with their participation and sharing of ideas during the discussions made it a privilege to be a part of. Well done, Year 6 – you are without doubt going to make fantastic leaders this year.

In other news this week, we began our Science topic on the circulatory system and keeping healthy. We learnt about the key components of the circulatory system and acted the system out on the field, with children being the heart, the lungs, red blood cells and muscles of the body.

In English, we focused on the essentials of sentence writing, in Maths we began with place value, in Music we learnt about beat and syncopation, in Geography we began our topic on rivers, and in PE we practised catching small balls.

Welcome to Year 6

Welcome back!

It’s been a wonderful two days in the Year 6 classroom, with plenty of hard work, lots of smiles and a great deal of hand washing!

Our focus has been on launching the Year of Hope, which began with an Act of Worship yesterday morning in which the children buried their negative thoughts from lockdown and wrote their hopes for the year ahead on a butterfly. They followed this with writing beautiful poems about what hope is like to them. Today, we looked at a song, animation, short story and hymn; the children discussed and wrote about the messages of hope contained within them.

Please note that Year 6’s PE days will be Wednesdays and Fridays, starting from next week. Please ensure that your child comes to school dressed in their full PE kits on these days. Thank you.

Catholic Social Teaching

Last week we explored the principles of Catholic Social Teaching and learnt that the principle of human dignity is the parent principle

The phrase ‘Image of God’ comes from Genesis (1:26 and 1:27) which says that God made humans in God’s own image. “God said, ‘Let us make humankind in our image, according to our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the wild animals of the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth.’ So, God created humankind in his image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created image.” Gen 1:26, 27

 

Activities

When the Church writes its official teaching, it writes in Latin.

In Latin the phrase ‘Image of God’ is ‘Imago Dei’. We know that God has no physical body. God is pure spirit, so we can’t actually look like God. But we can be like God in our nature – in the way we act and speak and behave. We can be like God, being creative, not destructive.

The Principles of Catholic Social Teaching remind us how to be like God: how to act and be the image of God. Make some decorative signs that say ‘Imago Dei’ and put them on the mirrors in your house, so that when you look in the mirror and see yourself you are reminded that you are made in God’s image. You will find others if you google images, Imago Dei!
