Autumn 1 Week 5

It has been a busy week for Year 5!
Along with the rest of the school, we took part in Healthy Eating Week. We learnt about drinking more, varying our veg, being mind kind, being active and eating more whole grains. For the latter, we made some muffins and substituted a portion of the flour for whole grain. These lessons prompted a lot of interesting discussion around their food choices in general.
On Wednesday, we had our first karate session. It was fantastic try a different exercise.
We hope you enjoyed our first virtual assembly. It was strange not to be doing it in the hall with you all there but we are glad we still got to share it with you.
Have a wonderful weekend

Autumn 1 Week 4

This week, we completed our end of unit writing for our ‘Who am I?’ English topic. The children wrote descriptions of themselves and thought deeply about who they are. I was really impressed with the final outcome. Our maths learning has continued to focus on place value. We have added and subtracted 10, 100, 1000 and 10,000 from large numbers and worked on Roman numerals.
In Science this week, we have begun an investigation about the effect of mineral salts on the growth of plants. We have planted radishes with various amounts of mineral pellets and we will watch the impact of this over the next few weeks.

We braved the windy weather this afternoon and went outside to work on our chest pass technique with some throwing tennis.
We welcomed Fr Alex into school today and he led us in a mass. Year 5 behaved reverently throughout and Fr Alex was very impressed with their behaviour.
Wishing you a wonderful weekend.

Mathletics has been set as have activities on study ladder. Children should complete 10 readtheory tests and learn week 3 spellings.

Autumn 1 Week 3

We have made the most of the fantastic weather this week and got outside for some of our lessons. For Science, we went in search of wildlife on our school grounds and tried to determine what stage of its life cycle the creature was in. Our weekly mindfulness task gave us the opportunity to take notice of the natural world around us and make drawings of plants in bloom. Our PE lessons have focused on agility, dodging and chest passing. Year 5 have loved some of the games we have played, with ‘gladiators’ being a particular favourite!
I have been greatly impressed with the children’s maths skills over the past couple of weeks. We have progressed our place value from 4 digit to 7 digit numbers. Well done, Year 5!
Wishing you all a wonderful weekend.

Year 5 Term 1A Overview

Autumn 1 Week 2

We have come to the end of our first full week of learning. The children have continued to settle and adjust to being back in school full time. We have started many of our new topics this week.
In science, we are learning about animals including humans. In Year 5, this means learning about life cycles and human growth. We started by investigating eggs and making scientific observations about them. Year 5 were able to pick out small details and learnt about each part of the egg.
In RE, we have been thinking about our mission prayer. The children searched through St Paul’s letters to find evidence of where we gain our key themes of care, respect, using our talents and believing we are all God’s work of art. We also thought about how we display these each day in school.
Multi skills is our current topic in PE. Today we learnt how to be more agile and improve our dodging technique. Please note that there is a change to our PE day. From now on, we will have PE on Tuesdays and Fridays.
Home learning has been set today. The children have been given their home reading records and login details have been stuck inside. There are details for 3 different sites: readtheory.org, mathletics and  studyladder. This week, children should log in and complete the mathletics set and the initial assessment on readtheory. There has been no learning set on studyladder. Spellings for the half term will be given on Monday. The readtheory assessment is important to find the right level for the comprehensions your child will be given. Please let them complete this independently and reassure them not to worry if they find it difficult.

Welcome to Year 5

Welcome back. It has been wonderful spending time getting to know your children over the past two days. They have all adjusted well to new routines and have loved seeing each other again at playtime. It has been a great pleasure seeing their smiles and how happy being together as a class has made them. This week, we have been busy learning about hope, our new school focus for this year. I was thoroughly uplifted by their explanations of where they find hope in their lives.

This year, children need to come to school wearing their PE kits. Year 5 PE days are Tuesday and Friday. This will start from next week. Year 5 have been fantastic at bringing in water bottles and pencil cases daily, thank you.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend

Thursday 16th July 2020

Good morning,

Welcome to the last day of Year 5! It has been a pleasure to be your teacher this year. Although it was frustrating and disappointing that our time was cut short, I have so many happy memories of you all. Thank you for your hard work this year, particularly under such challenging circumstances. You should all be really proud of yourselves and I can’t wait to see you back in September in Year 6. You will be wonderful leaders of our school and I know you will all shine. Thank you for the wonderful gift you gave me yesterday, I truly appreciate your generosity. I had only discussed with my bubble earlier in the the day that we hadn’t been able to get our official class photograph this year, so your rainbow picture is perfect. Have a wonderful summer holiday.
