Summer 1 Week 5

In English this week, Year 5 wrote their narratives they have building up to for the past few weeks. I was really impressed by their use of repetition for effect and the powerful verbs they included to provide interest for their reader. Next week, these will be edited and written up in their best handwriting.

In maths we have continued to focus on division.  Year 5 have put a lot of effort into understanding the short method and have been diving 4 digit numbers by a single digit. Next week, we will be expressing remainders in a range of ways.

It was the feast of the Ascension on Thursday and Year 5 took part in a mass at Our Lady and St Vincent via live stream. Mrs Moccia was pleased with the learning the produced on the significance of this event.

Today we started our entries for the Royal Mail Heroes stamp competition. This involved Year 5 thinking about who their hero of the coronavirus pandemic is and commemorating them with a stamp.

We finished our week with some Golden Time outside. It felt well deserved after the soggy week we had.

Have a wonderful weekend

Summer 1 Week 4

During our short week, we planned a narrative in English,  used a formal written method to divide and planned our own science investigations about parachutes. Today we honoured Mary through our May procession. Thank you for the flowers you brought in, they helped to make our outside alter incredibly beautiful. In Re, Year 5 learnt about the Rosary with Mrs McNamara and today we thought about why Mary is so important to us. This generated a lot of interesting discussion and questions.

Summer 1 Week 3

Year 5 have worked incredibly hard this week. In maths, they have continued to work on fractions by adding and subtracting them and converting the answer from improper fractions to mixed numbers. In English we have thought about how to show the emotion of a character without telling their audience how they feel. We have also planned our writing which we will start next week. Our science learning on forces has continued by exploring friction.

On Thursday, we had a visiting cricket coach. The children took part with great enthusiasm.

Have a wonderful long weekend. I look forward to seeing the children in their summer uniforms on Tuesday 4th.

Summer 1 Week 2

It has been a busy week in Year 5. The highlight was our visit from the Ark Farm. The children loved getting up close with the animals and feeding them. We were also lucky enough to be visited by Howard and Kit Williams from Cattlegate farm to learn more about arable farming.

In English, we have been focusing on our use of conjunctions and relative clauses while in maths we have been ordering and comparing fractions. This week, we began our new science topic about forces and today we investigated how surface area can affect how an object falls.

Summer 1 Week 1

It was lovely to welcome the children back this week. We have been learning about the resurrection story according to Mark and we compared it to Luke’s version. Today the children made beautiful butterflies for our class display to represent new life.

There was much excitement on Monday for our Easter egg hunt. Thank you to FOPPS for organising this.

In D&T, we  completed our CAM toys. They have come home to you this evening for you to look at and play with. The children worked incredibly hard and were so mature in using the equipment.

Friday 26th March 2021

This week in Year 5 we continued to rehearse our singing for the Stations of the Cross service, which took place on Thursday. Well done to all of Year 5 in helping lead our school and community in this beautiful reflection.

The children enjoyed taking part in Lenten fundraising this week by making Easter gardens, having a Fairtrade banana and biscuit bar, and completing word hunts and obstacle courses. Thank you to the Year 6 children for organising these events.

Today we took part in a Science investigation to find out whether the longer our legs are, the further we can jump. Ask your child to fill you in on our findings.

Thank you to Joseph who made cupcakes for everyone today- they were delicious.

There is no home learning for the Easter break. Have a wonderful rest and I look forward to welcoming you all back in the Summer Term.

Friday 19th March 2021- Year 5

In Year 5 this week, we have continued to develop our understanding of fractions and used cohesive devices in our writing. We have also begun building our moving toys by creating our frames and axles.

Today was Red Nose Day and so our mile a day run included balancing a golf ball on a spoon. Well done to Mishka and Sami Z, who represented Year 5in the end of day whole school joke assembly.

Next week, we will focus on Holy Week so today we sequenced the key events from Palm Sunday to Pentecost on a wreath.

Next week, Year 5 will form a choir for our Stations of the Cross at OLSV.  You can watch on the Livestream at 10:30 on Thursday.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Welcome Back

It was wonderful to welcome all of Year 5 back to school this week. We have been incredibly busy! On Monday we made Viking bread and used cream to make our own butter. Their loaves looked amazing. Here is the link to the recipe if you want to try at home: https://raisinglifelonglearners.com/kids-in-the-kitchen-viking-bread-recipe-2/

On Thursday we took part in World Book Day. We had a real range of costumes! Well done to everyone for putting in so much effort.

This week has been British Science Week. The focus this year is on being innovative. With this in mind, we have learnt about moving toys and over the next few weeks will become inventors ourselves and build our own toy using cam mechanisms. We also learnt about a famous toy inventor: Ole Kirk Christiansen, the inventor of Lego. His journey was incredibly inspiring. Here is a link to his life story, told through animation:

Each day, we have been working on improving fitness by running/walking a mile. Try and keep this up over the weekend. On Monday, it took 28 minutes for everyone to complete the course. Today, it was 18 minutes. Well done, Year 5!

Wishing you a wonderful weekend and Mothering Sunday.

·         What season of the year is it? What will the weather be like?

·         Do Christians from around the world go to Church on Christmas Day?

·         What rituals will be part of the liturgy for Christmas Day?

·         Is there a Father Christmas?

·         Customs regarding decorations – trees, cards, wreaths

·         How to say Merry Christmas in the local language
