Spring Term – Week 3

Year One have had another busy week beginning with an introduction to their new Science topic on ‘Materials.’ We worked as a class talking about what is an object and what is a material. We brainstormed our ideas and wrote down the different materials we could see in our classroom. On Wednesday, we went on a material hunt in the classroom and categorised our objects into the correct groups. This gave us lots of interesting things to note! We recognised that we had no glass items and talked about the reasons why. Some objects were made of two or more materials and we discussed how we could show this in our sets. We are looking forward to finding out more about materials and their properties, over the coming weeks.

In Maths, we have been learning about positional language and ordinal numbers. We used our attendance poodle to demonstrate positional language, by giving each other instructions on where to put her in the classroom. The children were very excited to give each other instructions, using positional language such as: on top of, under, next to, beside, in between and inside. The children went on to play this game with their friends throughout the day.

The Big Garden Birdwatch 26th -28th January.

The Big Garden Birdwatch is the world’s largest garden wildlife survey. Every year, hundreds of thousands of nature lovers like you take part, helping to build a picture of how garden birds are faring. We would like Pope Paul to take part. Please follow the instructions on the leaflets attached to the newsletter.

Count the birds you see in your garden, from your balcony or in your local park for one hour. Use the tally chart attached and submit your results on  www.rspb.org.uk/birdwatch

See the information on the link worksheet

Please send a copy of your results to school – see newsletter for more details.

Have a lovely weekend,

The Year One team
