Advent Service 2023 – songs to practise

Please practise the songs for the KS2 Advent Service, using these videos to help you.

Year 5 – 24/11/23

On Monday, whilst half the class were out with the choir, the remaining Y5s joined forces with the remaining Y4s and Y6s for a day filled with problem solving and teamwork. In the morning, they were set a challenge involving teacups and saucers, and in the afternoon they were tasked with designing and building a marble run. It was fascinating to see the different approaches that the groups took, and it was a delight to see them working so brilliantly in their groups.

This week in English, the children completed their journalistic reports based on The Boy at the Back of the Class. I’ve been really impressed with the formal language that they have used in their pieces – well done! We began our new unit based on a classic Christmas text called The Christmas Miracle of Jonathan Toomey – after discussing the front cover and reading the blurb, the children are curious to find out the mystery behind Mr Toomey’s kitchen drawer!

In Maths, we concluded our learning on addition and subtraction, and moved onto the properties of number, this week focusing on multiples.

In RE, the children have been praying the Lectio Divina, and I am blown away by the beautiful reflections that they have written.

In PE, we continued our netball unit by this week learning how to pivot.

This afternoon, we began a new Music unit about Gospel music. We learnt about the background to spiritual and Gospel songs, then listened to a couple of contrasting arrangements of Wade in the Water, followed by a powerful performance by Aretha Franklin in a Baptist church.

We have also made great progress with our song for the Advent Service. Please practise at home using this video:

Autumn 2 Week 4

We have been learning about the importance of giving clear instructions as part of our Computing unit on algorithms. During this week’s lesson, we planned careful routes and instructions for a friend to follow.

In PE we have travelled over, under, across and on top of various apparatus. We also enjoyed going to watch the Dame Alice Owen’s Gym and Dance dress rehearsal on Monday.

During RE, we have created an Advent Prayer Calendar and helped plan a collective worship about peace.

In Science, we have also explored what living things need to survive.

Friday 24th November 2023

The highlight of our week was our trip to the Science Museum. The children were very excited to go on the train into London and experience the ‘Turn it Up’ gallery. This was a music based area and it provided them with the chance to listen to and make music. It also asked them to consider how music can impact our emotions. Well done to Anna and Archie for speaking about our trip in assembly today.

Thank you to Anna’s, Erin’s and Federico’s parents who assisted on the trip.

We’ll be on the train again next week for our trip to Westminster Cathedral for the Diocesan Advent Service on Wednesday.

Have a good weekend!

Autumn 2 Week 3

This week in Year One the children learned about the importance of Prayer. We discussed how Prayer strengthens our relationships to God and one another. The children worked in pairs to answer the questions how do we pray? What helps you to pray? What kind of things do we pray for or about? We took some time to reflect on our answers and to offer our own intentions for prayers to include ourselves and others.

In Maths we have been learning about Pentonimoes’. Year One practised making a variety of arrangements of shapes from 5 cubes. A Pentonimo is a shape made by joining five squares together side-to-side. Once they had investigated their shapes they went onto recording the number sentences that each shape represents. They remembered that when thinking of a Pentonimo they need to to Think 5 !

In English the children have been learning about Nouns and using them to write independent sentences about what they can see on the farm. They enjoyed writing about the lazy farmer and all of the animals in their text of Farmer Duck. The children were very good at developing their sentences by adding adjectives and showed great creativity in their writing.

In PE the children warmed up by working in groups to steal been bags! They then developed their movement skills by travelling in different ways. They bear crawled, walked backwards, bunny jumped and pulled themselves forward using only their feet. The children were encouraged to travel along different pathways e.g zig zags, curved, straight and circular lines. They showed great skill and control during these activities and enjoyed moving in new ways.

The children have been very busy in Geography learning the countries that make up the United Kingdom. They have been looking at their local area, starting small and gradually getting bigger – Potters Bar, England, United Kingdom, Europe. They are showing great understanding and have enjoyed listening to our Continents song. Please ask them to sing it to you at home!

Home Learning – due Friday.

Mathletics – please complete the activities set.

Handwriting sheet, letter ‘r’.

Nativity Lines – you will find your child’s lines for the Nativity in their blue reading folder. Please practice these with them and keep this copy at home.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Friday, 24th November 2023

This week, the children in Year 4 had multiple opportunities to learn whilst having fun.

On Monday, the choir spent the day at the Royal Albert Hall, whilst any remaining children worked on a clever, open ended Maths problem with Year 5 and 6 pupils, made props for our upcoming KS2 Advent service and finally designed and built their own Marble Run using only paper.

On Tuesday, we participated in a Multi Skills sports festival at Furzefield Centre, competing against local schools. The children had a go at frisbee, tennis, football, long jump and throwing. Even though it was cold and a bit wet, the class had a great time and it has been lovely to see them support and cheer for each other.

Later on in the week, we revised the use of fronted adverbials in English and planned for our second big narrative based on the story of Ice Palace that the children will write next week. In Maths, we focused on counting in multiples and representing multiplication number sentences with arrays and bar models.

In RE, we prayed the Lectio Divina and practiced for our Advent service whilst in Science, we used junk modelling resources to build musical instruments in order to investigate volume, pitch and the strength of vibration.

Please note, that next week, the children will need to walk to the Church on Wednesday (29th) and Friday (1st) for a rehearsal, so it is important that they have a hooded, warm coat on those days.

If your child told you that they have received acting parts in the Advent Service (St Lucia, Star boys, Attendants), they will need a simple outfit for the service. For boys: grey school trousers + a white top. That can be dad’s oversized T shirt/ a tunic/ a gown. Please NO bright logos! For girls: school tights/ leggings + a white top. That again can be a larger shirt/ T shirt, a white dress. The longer, the looser the white tops are, the better. Please do not feel, you have to buy or order a specific costume. Any existing large white top is perfect. Please send these to school in a labelled bag on Monday, 4th November 2023. Thank you for your support with this.

Have a lovely weekend,

Ms Varga

Autumn 2 Week 4

Another busy week of learning in Reception Class. This week we learnt about Hanukah, a Jewish festival. The children drew pictures of the temple that was destroyed and wrote some words and captions. They also thought about special things that they have and how they would feel if they were destroyed. They made cards to wish people Happy Hanukah and they made a menorah using their handprints. Wonderful building of temples were created too!

In Literacy, we read the story Whatever Next. The children acted out the story using props and we sequenced pictures from the story. The highlight was decorating a big rocket to use in our space station. The children loved dressing up as an astronaut and boarding the rocket. It was wonderful to  see the children practising their writing in the Space Station when writing boarding passes and writing including letters home to tell mum or dad about their adventures. They also drew and wrote a list of what they would take to space. In our Art area, the children made rockets with squares and triangles that look lovely displayed in the class.

In Maths, we have been learning about repeated patterns. Children have been extending patterns and making their own patterns by using nature objects and objects we use in the class. The children have also been drawing their own patterns. We made noises with our bodies to create patterns.

Each day, we have been working hard practising our class Nativity. Thank you for the costumes that have been sent in. If you have not sent a costume in, please can we have them next week.

In our Ten Ten lesson, we thought about how we are all special and unique. The children wrote what they thought was special about them on stars and decorated them. We through about all of the children’s amazing qualities and how we have special gifts and talents.

Remember to wear one item of purple clothing on Monday.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Year 6 Week Beginning 20.11.23

On Monday, 12 members of Year 6 had the most wonderful time at London’s Royal Albert Hall, performing alongside the world famous Royal Symphony Orchestra!

Although the day was long, the children still managed to have some fun in the park when they took a break from rehearsals. As day met night, the lights illuminated the Royal Albert Hall and the surrounding buildings and monuments, giving off a sense of excitement and magic. When the time came to perform, the children wowed the huge audience with their voices, making their teachers and parent very proud. It was an experience that no one will forget!

In Art, the children finished their propaganda art piece based on the work of artist Sheperd Fairey. This art piece required the children to use and further develop collage, intricate cutting and painting skills. During this unit, the children were introduced to the idea that artists can use their skills, vision and creativity to speak on behalf of communities, changing the world for the better.

Year 6 have expressed their own message to the world through creating their own individual art pieces.

As the Advent service draws ever nearer, your home learning this week is to continue to learn the words to the Mexican song- Los Posadas. Please use the video to ensure that you get the pronunciation correct. Please also rehearse your lines for the service, speaking clearly, slowly and loudly!

Los Pasadas

Information about the song:

In Mexico over 9 evenings until Christmas Eve, a group of singers called “peregrinos (pilgrims)” reenact Mary and Joseph’s search for room in an inn. They go to different homes, and the “posaderos (innkeepers)” sing call and response with the carolers. After singing all verses, the peregrinos enter the home, where they all  sing together.

Lyrics – Spanish

(Mexican folk carol)

En el nombre del cielo os pido posada,
pues no puede andar mi esposa amada.

Aquí no es mesón sigan adelante,
yo no puedo abrir, no sea algún tunante.

No seas inhumano, tenos caridad,

Have a lovely weekend,

Autumn 2 Week 3

We started the week by wearing odd socks to launch Anti Bullying Week. Over the week we have discussed and read many books that celebrate our differences. We have discussed how discrimination can make us feel and how we can support others, identify our similarities and celebrate our differences.

Our Non-Fiction English unit about Sharks has continued this week. We have researched the growth, movement and life of these wonderful creatures in order to write our own information pages about them.

In Geography, we have begun our new topic about Emperor Penguins in the Antarctic.
