Friday 21st July 2023

Our final week has been filled with making memories. On Tuesday we spent time with our Reception partners having a movie and popcorn afternoon.

On Wednesday, it was wonderful to join together for a mass to celebrate the end of the children’s Pope Paul journey. We followed that with a fantastic pizza and ice cream factory lunch.

Thursday was Fun Day and we certainly did just that! Take a look at what we got up to…

Today was filled with signing shirts and yearbooks.

We wish all the children and their families a wonderful summer and a brilliant start at their new schools.

Thank you parents for your wonderful gifts and beautiful cards.

We wish the class a fun filled disco evening and a wonderful summer!

Year 5 – 21/07/23

And just like that, Year 5 has come to an end 😔It really has flown by, seeming like only a few months ago that you came into my classroom for your transition day, unsure how to feel about the prospect of being in upper Key Stage 2. You really have been a fantastic class to teach – so much enthusiasm, so many individual personalities, and so much care and kindness dictating your daily actions. I wasn’t able to thank you properly at home time today because we were all blubbering messes and I couldn’t string more than 3 words together, but thank you so much for making my job so enjoyable and for giving me a brilliant year. Thank you also for the generous gifts and kind words written; it is really appreciated 💖

It has been a fun-filled final week. The week began with our Mini Police assembly – which you wrote and delivered superbly. Here you all are, being presented with your certificates by the chief inspector.

Yesterday was the Summer Fun Day, which did what it says on the tin. Between the bouncy castle, Nerf guns, sponge throwing, rat splatting, duck hooking and body tattooing, we played the Pirate Game, which was as enjoyable as it was intense! The day ended with a bowlful of tasty treats. Thank you FOPPS for organising such a great day!

Wishing you all a fantastic summer, whether it is relaxed or adventure-filled!

Love Miss Donatantonio 🌞

Reception Final Week!

We have finally reached the last day in Reception, after a fun-filled week!

Lots of our time has been spent with our very special Year 6 reading partners. On Tuesday, the class enjoyed a mini disco followed by a movie and popcorn  with them.

The highlight of the week was the School Summer Party Day, yesterday. Please see the photos below for a taste of what the day involved.

This morning, we were treated to a special visitor-Donnie’s pet tarantula. Donnie was amazing at telling the class all about Ricky the spider, and how he takes special care of it. Well done Donnie!

Parents, thank you for all of your support. It has been a very special year! Thank you too for all of your cards, kind words and gifts. They are very much appreciated it by us all.

Have a wonderful summer.

See you all in September,

The Reception Team

Friday 14th July 2023

Our penultimate week in Year 6 has seen the children get very creative. On Tuesday, all children at Pope Paul took part in a Design and Technology day with the same goal: to build a better world. Year 6 looked at sustainable housing and ways designers put technology into practise. With this knowledge, they built a prototype for what their vision of a sustainable home would be. There was a huge amount of excitement around this project and children threw themselves into the challenge. Many of the houses even looked at eco-friendly ways of including football pitches!

On Thursday most of Year 6 visited their new schools for the day. It was wonderful to hear how much they enjoyed it and how excited they are to attend in September.

Today we were treated to a concert by Year 5 and 6 musicians. Well done to Hebe, Eimear, Max, Tymon, Johanna and all the choir members from Year 6 for a beautiful performance.

We have a very exciting week next week! On Wednesday we have our class mass in the morning. Please arrive at OLSV at 9:30am, not at the school. This is followed by a Year 6 party in the afternoon. Please make sure summer uniform is worn for this day (no hoodies or trainers). On this day, the children are invited to have a special school lunch of pizza and ice-cream factory, billable at the normal school rate. On Thursday we have the school fun day where children will be able to wear their own clothes. On Friday we have our final morning and this is the day for signing year books and old school shirts. Children should not bring these in before this date to avoid disruption. Monday and Tuesday are normal school days but there will be no PE due to our special final session with our reading partners. Therefore, PE kit will not need to be worn at all in the final week.

Please can the children bring in a plastic carrier bag for their books etc… to go home in by Tuesday 18th July. Books will be sent home on Wednesday and Thursday.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Friday, 14th July 2023

This week, the children in Year 4 used Scientific vocabulary to describe invertebrates found around the school grounds and used classification keys to name and describe them.

In RE, they further developed their understanding of the life and work of Nelson Mandela and made links with the Kingdom of Heaven and Gospel values.

Tuesday afternoon we enjoyed listening to the wonderful performance of our class musicians.

On Wednesday we went to Nicholas Breakspear School  for a Community Mass. With Year 5, we joined the Year 7s from NBS and two other Catholic primary schools for Mass followed by an exciting rounders tournament.

Thursday was D&T day for Year 4, with a whole-school focus on Building a Better World. Our task was to test and evaluate alternative, more sustainable ways to generate electricity. We tried our hands at building potato and lemon batteries with some success.

On Thursday, the class also had the chance to spend some time in their new classroom, with their new teacher Miss Donatantonio as part of Transition Day.

Thank you for all of you who came to ‘say goodbye’ to our lovely Year 4 classroom and the children’s amazing work; it has been lovely to see you and have a final few words of celebration before the end of this year.

Please, could you send in a strong tote bag next week, as we will slowly start sending books and artwork home.

Have a lovely weekend and see on Monday for our final 4 days together (Mrs McDonald finishing the week off on Friday)

Ms Varga

Please practice your spelling words from this week.- https://www.edshed.com/en-gb and update reading logs.

Summer 2 Week 6

It was wonderful to see so many Year 3 children singing, playing the piano or the violin in the Music Concert. Well done to D’hani, Sophia P, Isabella P, Leo S, Raphaella, Rose, Gabriella, Clodagh and Eloise.

In In PE, we played rounders. The children worked well in teams and learnt to follow the rules.

On Tuesday we had Design and Technology Day. We learnt about windmills and what they are used for. The children designed, made and evaluated a windmill that rotates when we put it near a fan. The children thought carefully about the amount and shape of the propellers. When the children tested their windmills, some did not work so they had to think about why and make changes until they did work.

On Wednesday, we went to Hatfield House. The excitement started with the train journey! The children were a credit to the school with their wonderful behaviour. First the children observed the leaves on different trees and matched them with pictures to identify the name of the tree. Then the children went on a plant hunt and identified different plants in the gardens. Next they found different mini beasts around the gardens and the grounds. After we had lunch and they got to play on the big field. We ended the day with the children sketching flowers in the gardens.

See PowerPoint of picture here  Year 3 Trip to Hatfield House

On Thursday, we had a journey around the school to our new class. It was lovely to walk through all the classes we have been in since joining Pope Paul School. The children were excited to go into Year 4 with Ms Varga for their transition day.

Siofra could not receive her Gold Award in assembly so Mrs Heymoz presented it to her in class. Well done!

Please read and practise timetables.

Have a lovely weekend.

Reception Week Beginning 10.7.23

It has been another very busy week in Reception!

The children have been having lots of extra transition sessions with their new teachers, to prepare them for their move into Year One in September.  As a result, the class now seem really excited and less anxious about the changes ahead of them.

The main learning focus for this week has centred around the themes of friendship, teamwork and solidarity, which are all found in the well loved story, ‘Room on the Broom’, by Julia Donaldson.

The children loved acting out the story using props that they found in the dressing up box. They also made their own magic wands and wrote activation spells to make them work.

Reception also designed and made their own super broomsticks suitable for themselves and their friends to share. They created their own horrible beasts and made dragons and character puppets, which they used to retell the story.

This afternoon, after the class had met up with their Year 6 reading partners, they all settled down to watch the BBC adaptation of the story- perfect for a rainy Friday afternoon! This short film can be found following the link here:

Wishing you all a lovely weekend- hold on to your brooms and wands children, it’s forecast to be a windy one!
