Year 5 – 10/02/23 – Happy Half Term!

This week, the main excitement was on Tuesday when the choir members took part in the Young Voices concert at Wembley Arena. They were still buzzing from it for most of Wednesday, until the tiredness from the late night hit them! Well done choir!

Meanwhile, those back at school joined forces with the Y3s and Y4s to plan and construct bridges. Their structures were very impressive and they worked brilliantly in their teams.

Reception Week Beginning 6.2.23

This week, the children have been focussing on the story ‘The Elves and the Shoemaker’.

The story is a simple one, of a poor shoemaker and his wife who suddenly find they are getting help from a mysterious source. They discover their helpers are little elves, whom are working long and hard to finish making shoes. When the man and woman become rich because of the elves, they decide they must give
back to the elves in return.

The children absolutely loved this story and had lots of fun dressing up as elves and making their own shoes in the workshop.

The class explored the many different patterns on the soles of their shoes and even took some shoe rubbings to compare and measure.

One of the children spotted an actual elf running around outside;  the children decided to write letters to the elves, asking them lots of  questions. They placed their letters in the tree and are looking forward to see whether or not they respond over the half term!

The class also designed and made their own shoes, made elf hats and created clothes fit for an elf!

Today, we had our long awaited class assembly, all about love. The children worked so hard to prepare and were absolutely fantastic!

We hope you enjoyed it!

We hope you have a wonderful half term break.

See you soon,

The Reception Team

Friday, 10th February 2023

The children in Year 4 had a busy last week to their half term. In English, they thought about character and story line and mapped out the main events of their class book, Ica Palace. In Math, they estimated, measured and ordered length and capacity, applying their understanding of conversion between units.

In PE, they extended their routines with a further 16 counts and performed in groups.

In Science, they planned a fair test to investigate how fast certain liquids move and prepared graphs to record their data.

On Tuesday, whilst the choir performed in the Wembley Arena, the rest of the children gathered in the hall and used their D&T skills to design, build and evaluate bridges for their weight- bearing capabilities.

In Art, we used a combination of watercolour and poster paint to create silhouette pictures based on our class book,  Ice Palace.

In RE, we looked at the Beatitudes again and read other ‘translations’ of them before writing examples of how to live them out in our daily lives.

Thank you for all of you who came to meet with me during this week’s parent consultations. It has been lovely to share and celebrate with you the children’s achievements so far. Also huge well done to the choir who showcased their talents brilliantly during the Young Voices concert in Wembley. We are all very proud of you!

I wish you and your families a lovely weekend and a restful half-term,

Ms Varga

If you are able to, please continue practicing your multiplication facts and update your reading logs.

Spring 2 Week 5

Another half term over! In English the children have been researching pirates and have written a non- chronological report. Children were encouraged to focus on prepositions to provide more detail to the reader. Then they made a book on pirates as their final piece. At the end of the week the children collaged and painted pirate ships.

In Maths, we have been subtracting using column subtraction with and without regrouping. The children have worked hard to grasp this new concept.

In Art, the children completed their final pieces by adding stitching to their painting. They did a fantastic job and they are on display in the classroom.

On Wednesday, the choir children sang at Wembley Arena as part of the Young Voices. They sang with Heather Small and did some beatboxing with famous beatboxers. The children were a credit to our school with their amazing voices, great dancing and brilliant behaviour.

In Religion, we have been learning about the Beatitudes. We thought about different Saints and how they showed that they were Beatitudes person. Then we thought about people we know who are Beatitudes people. After we spoke to Mrs Lopez about how she lives her life as Beatitude person.

Spring Term Week 4 w.b. 6th February January 2023

In Religion Year 1 reflected on the The Beatitudes again and thought about how they can be peacemakers at home, in the classroom and in the playground. They then looked at the life of Mother Teresa and thought about how she lived her life by following The Beatitudes and carrying out God’s work.

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God”

In Maths year 1 have challenged themselves with lots of odd and even puzzles.

They have continued to enjoy playing these games for their mental math warm ups.

In English the children worked hard to re-write the story of ‘Where’s my Teddy?’ They are looking forward to sharing their stories with you after the holidays.

Phonic sounds taught this week: ie (chief) y makes an ee sound (happy) y makes an igh sound (fly)

Tricky words: people. Mr, Mrs, looked, asked, called

Thank you to all those that were able to attend parent’s evening this week. It was lovely to celebrate your child’s progress with you and show you their learning.

The Year 1 Team wish you a safe and happy half term and look forward to seeing you again on Monday 20th February.

Happy holidays! 🙂

Friday 10th February

It was lovely to meet with so many of you at Parent Consultations this week and celebrate your child’s achievements in all areas of their learning. For those parents who were not able to attend, we will be in touch after half-term to arrange a time with you.

This week the children have continued with their work on division: dividing numbers up to 4 digits by a two-digit whole number using the formal written method of long division (and short division where appropriate) and interpreting remainders as whole number remainders, fractions, or by rounding, as appropriate for the context.  They have been answering many worded problems to aid them with their understanding of this topic.

In RE we continued with our work on the Beatitudes and examined the life of a beatitudes person, St Teresa (Mother Teresa of Calcutta) and discussed how she lived her life alongside the beatitudes.

The blessed are filled with God’s joy. Jesus wants all people to be happy. Even if we are not healthy, famous, beautiful, rich, strong or brilliant, the children have learnt that the beatitudes are God’s promise of happiness.

On Thursday the children took part in a very special Liturgy of Preparation with Lorcan for Ash Wednesday.  The palms that were collected from the parishioners who received them from last year’s Palm Sunday celebration were burnt in our peace garden and the children saw how they will become the ashes that will be used on Ash Wednesday this year. Thank you to Caroline, Maria and Johanna who assisted in preparing the palms for this liturgy and to the children who did the readings.

In PE, we continued on our theme of motion and before the start of our lesson Vihaan and VJ led us in our warm up.  Well done to them.  The children displayed their sequences to one another and I was pleased to see how they had incorporated leap frog, cat spring, rolling and jumping into their group’s performance.

This afternoon, the children spent time with their reading buddies and both classrooms were filled with exciting activities and conversations!  A lovely ending to a very busy week!

Finally, well done to the members of our school choir who showcased their talents brilliantly during the Young Voices concert in Wembley on Tuesday evening.  The choir were buzzing on Wednesday and shared the many experiences they had had from their experience.

There is no home learning for the half-term break but this is a great opportunity for those children to complete any outstanding mathletics or SPAG home learning.  I have also created another blog for any children who would like to have an opportunity to look at revision aids.

Wishing you and your family a lovely half-term break.

In Year 6, We have continued our learning based on Arthur Spiderwick’s Field Guide. This week we emulated the author to describe field piskies and used subordinate clause sentence starters to tell our reader about sprites. In maths the children have been improving their long division.

Our Geography learning focused on our mapping skills. We used OS maps of Southampton to locate key points, using four and six figure grid references.

Take a look at our self portraits from Wednesday:

Thank you for the family pictures you sent in. The children were able to identify which features they inherited from which parent.

Have a great weekend

Reception Week Beginning 30.1.23

This week, Reception have been focussing their learning around the story ‘The Gingerbread Man’, which they absolutely loved! The class particularly enjoyed learning the Gingerbread Man Song. Not only was the song frequently requested throughout the week, but we found that it also really helped the children to remember the order of the story.

On Wednesday, Reception took part in a lovely nature walk over the farmland next to the school. It was a beautiful, sunny morning, perfect for spotting wildlife and signs of new growth. The children were very excited to be outside of the school and exploring somewhere new.

The class have also been very busy preparing for next Friday’s class assembly. We are looking forward to seeing you there!

Have a lovely weekend,

The Reception Team

Spring 1 Week 4

We have written letters of apology in English using contractions, conjunctions and expanded noun phrases.

In Maths we have used our number bonds to 10 to add two and one digit numbers. We have also been using beadstrings to help us with addition and subtraction.

We have enjoyed sharing our habitat home learning with each other and researching different habitats in Science. If your child still has this home learning at home please send it in with them on Monday.

In PE we have been learning to climb the ropes! I have been very impressed with everyone in gymnastics so far this term.
