Reception Week Beginning 20.2.23

This week the children started their new topic for this half term-On the Farm.

In English, the children heard the story of Farmer Duck- a poor duck who had the bad luck to live with a lazy farmer! The class wrote their own story endings during guided writing and enjoyed making animal puppets, constructing farms, making farmyard inspired collages and finding out about different kinds of farms.

This week marked the start of Lent. On Wednesday, the children took part in a special Ash Wednesday service and were prayerful and respectful throughout.

In Maths this week, the children have been exploring the composition of 6, 7 and 8, through lots of practical exploration.

Today, Reception met their learning partners in the hall for a very fun session together. They had the choice of lots of different exciting activities to do and then finished off with a collective dance session!

Have a wonderful weekend,

The Reception Team

Spring 2 Week 1

Welcome back! We have been busy this week preparing for Lent. At the start of the week we made our Lenten promises, then we took part in an Ash Wednesday Service at school. This gave us time to reflect on our promises and ask God to forgive our sins.

In Maths we have been using different strategies for addition. I have been very impressed with the reasoning children have used when explaining their mathematical thinking.

In English we have written list poems about our favourite colours. The children have been very imaginative and descriptive.

In Science we have looked closely at microhabitats in the school grounds. The children have enjoyed researching some of the minibeasts and plants they have found.

We were fortunate enough to be invited to watch the Dame Alice Owens Gym and Dance dress rehearsal on Tuesday. This was an inspirational way to conclude our gymnastics unit. We are now moving on to invasion games in PE.

Have a lovely weekend

Year 5 – 24/02/23

Welcome back to a new half term and to the season of Lent. We marked the new liturgical season with Ash Wednesday Mass at the church, and we made Lenten promises that will help us to walk with Jesus on our pilgrimage to the cross.

We have had a busy week in the classroom; our new English unit based on the poem The Listeners by Walter de la Mare has allowed us to get the musical instruments out to create sounds effects when performing the poem, and in Maths we started our fractions learning. In PE, we began our Dance through the Decades unit with the Charleston, and in D&T we learnt how cam mechanisms work. Science has been a particular focus for this week; we started our unit about properties of materials, and conducted an investigation today to find out what materials are better thermal conductors or insulators.

Spring Term 2 Week 1

On Tuesday, Year 2 and 3 were invited to watch a gymnastics and dance show at Dame Alice Owen. The children enjoyed the show, and it was wonderful to see them dancing in the playground after. Then we made pancakes to celebrate Shrove Tuesday.

On Wednesday, the children went to church to celebrate Ash Wednesday. They sang and responded beautifully. The children thought about how they are going to journey with Jesus to the cross. They added these to the school display on Friday during assembly.

In Maths, the children have been learning about angles. The children went on an angle walk using a right-angle finder to identify objects with right angles. They made shapes and identified whether they had right angles, acute angles or obtuse angles. We have also been solving problems, identifying the start, the change and the result of a problems. The children have been drawing bar models to solve problems.

In English, we started a new unit of persuasive writing. We read the story Stella and the Seagull and identified how she persuaded people to make a difference to the environment. The children thought about what people thought of Stella and how Stella felt about herself following her wonderful ideas. Then the children wrote a persuasive letter to their parents to try to persuade them to let them stay up later at night. They thought carefully about reasons to encourage parents to think about it.

In Science, we did an investigation to find out how permeable soil is.

Friday 24th February

Our Spiderwick learning in English has now progressed to designing our own creature. Next week, Year 6 will create their own entry for the fieldguide. Maths learning this week has focussed on translation and reflection, learning to draw and translate shapes in all four quadrants of the co-ordinate grid and reflect a shape in the mirror line where the mirror line is not only horizontal and vertical but also diagonal.

Our science learning this week was based on Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection. Year 6 learnt about how the finches in the Galapagos islands varied in their beak shape and size depending on what island they were from and the food sources available. We then investigated this by creating our own beaks and saw how effective they were with a range of foods.

On Wednesday, we attended the Ash Wednesday mass at Our Lady and St Vincent’s Church.  Well done to Tymon and Albion who read at the mass. In the afternoon, some members of the liturgy group attended the Key Stage 1 Ash Wednesday service and read alongside the Key Stage 1 Class teachers.  Well done to Albion, Caroline, Eric and Maria.  A special thank you to Sophie who kindly stepped in to assist with the power point.

Have a wonderful weekend

Friday, 24th February 2023

The children in Year 4, had a busy week full of practical activities after their well deserved rest.

In Maths, they moved on to describing properties of common 2D shapes, using specific mathematical vocabulary. In English, they have looked at character development in our class book ‘Ice Palace’ and edited sentences from the story for fronted adverbials and subordinating clauses.

On Wednesday,  we marked the start of a new season in our Liturgical year; The Season of Lent. The children attended Mass and received ashes before making their Lenten promises in class, thinking about ways they can grow closer to God.

In Science, the children carried out practical investigations to test different liquids, interpreting data, representing data on a graph and finally drawing conclusions from the data collected.

In Art, they created textured tiles using clay as part of their still life unit, incorporating different fruits and flowers.

Next week Tuesday, the children will partake in the KS2 Reconciliation Service. Please take some time this weekend  and with the help of the guidance booklet sent home on Thursday talk to the children about their life in school, the decisions they make, how they treat each other, etc to help them articulate some ideas/feelings they can talk about during their time with Father Shaun. Talk to them about the importance of this service and how it helps them reflect on themselves and link these reflections with their Lenten promises and this special time of preparation.

I  would also like to mention, that arrangements in the swimming pool have changed since Furzefeild Sport Center is refurbishing their changing area. The children need to walk a considerable distance from the pool to the new changing zone and after coming out of the pool many of them feel very cold, especially when walking across the different surfaces bare foot. I would therefore strongly advise flip-flops to be part of their kit from now on and larger towels that the children can wrap themselves up into.

Have a lovely weekend,

Ms Varga

Home Learning:

As a preparation for World Book Day next week, I would like the children to spend some time researching their favourite author and creating a minimum A4 sized fact file/presentation. Please include details about their life (age appropriate), their work and summarize briefly the story of your favourite book from this author explaining why you like it so much and why you would recommend it to someone in class. The fact file can be handwritten or typed and it can include photos, book covers, pictures/drawings of favourite characters or scenes. Please be ready to present your work on Thursday, 2nd March 2023.

Your chosen author/book does not need to correspond with your outfit!

Spring Term 2 week 1 w.b. 20th February

Religious Education

This week we marked the start of a new season in our Liturgical year; The Season of Lent.

The children learnt that during Lent Catholics reflect and try to grow closer to God and Jesus through prayer, fasting and almsgiving.

They made a Lenten promise which they offered up during Friday’s assembly.

Your child has come home with a footprint template for them to make a Lenten promise to keep at home.

Well done to Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 for leading their Ash Wednesday service this week.

Mathematics

Year 1 has been learning addition methods this week. Please see below for the methods taught that you can ask the children about and practise at home.

Next week we will move on to subtraction methods.

English

The children enjoyed learning the poem ‘Silver Speck’ about a mouse and worked hard to gather their ideas to change the poem to be about a squirrel.

We wrote one as a class and then the children chose their favourite ideas to write their own poem about a squirrel.

Phonic sounds taught this week:

‘naughty y stealing the ‘i’ and ‘e’

Addition home learning sheets sent home this week:

Maths- consolidation of doubles/ odds and evens from last term

Handwriting- some tricky words to practise with the correct letter formation and height of letters in preparation to begin pre-cursive handwriting after Easter.

Please do not allow Year 1 to bring in football cards from now on as they are causing great upset during playtimes, distractions during class and lots have gone missing.

Happy Friday, see you on Monday,

Miss Lambie 😀 🐝
