The Feast of the Ascension

Today is a special feast day in our church; The feast of the Ascension. Forty days after the Resurrection of Jesus when we remember when Jesus returned to his Father in heaven.

Please join us at 10 a.m. for live streaming of Mass at Our Lady and St Vincent church.

Activities

Read the story below from the Acts of the Apostles

Jesus is taken up to heaven

The apostles were all together. They asked Jesus, “Lord, are you at this time going to give the kingdom back to Israel?”

Jesus said to them, “The Father is the only One who has the authority to decide dates and times. These things are now for you to know. But the Holy Spirit will come to you. Then you will receive power. You will be my witnesses – in Jerusalem, in all of Judea, in Samaria, and in every part of the world.”

After he said this, as they were watching, he was lifted up. A cloud hid him from their sight. As he was going, they were looking into the sky. Suddenly, two men wearing white clothes stood beside them. They said “Men of Galilee, why are you standing here looking into the sky? You saw Jesus taken away from you into heaven. He will come back in the same way you saw him go.”

Activity

Many famous Artists have painted their interpretation of this story including Giotto regarded as the most important Italian painter of the 14th century.  Look at his painting below called ‘The Ascension of Christ’ and think about what  you notice in his painting and which part is the most striking to you?

Giotto, the Ascension of Christ, 1304-06. Fresco from the Scrovegni (Arena) Chapel, Padua, Italy. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Giotto_-_Scrovegni_-_-38-_-_Ascension.jpg

Imagine you are a famous artist and have been asked to create a painting about the Ascension.

What would you paint?

What colours would you use?

Who would feature in your painting?

We look forward to seeing your creations.

REFLECTION ON MY DAY

How am I feeling at the end of today?

What have I most enjoyed today?

What am I thankful for today?

When was I most peaceful today?

What are my hopes for tomorrow?

Good Morning Year 4.

It has been wonderful to see what you have been up to!  Today is the Feast of the Ascension and as part of Spirituality Week, we have been asked to join mass at 10am with Fr Shaun and Deacon Axcel.  Yesterday,we were invited to examine the God who speaks through scripture. Reading biblical stories about Jesus’ power to heal can hearten and encourage us. Stories can offer hope. Today, you are being asked to think about the artist Giotto.

Let’s see what some of you got up to yesterday:

Keep up the good work.

We heard some sad news from Megan and Fabian whose pets have recently passed away. As part of out prayer time today, let us think of them at this sad time and offer them and their families comfort.

The most suitable questions for Year 6 are Q1-6, but why don’t you see if you can do the trickier ones either on your own or with the rest of your family.

Check your answers here.

RE WALT explain the importance of Pentecost for the Christian Church.

Today is the Feast of the Ascension, which marks 40 days since Easter Sunday. In 10 days time, ie. 50 days after Easter, we will celebrate the Feast of Pentecost.

Watch this retelling of the story of Pentecost (Acts 2:1-13): https://youtu.be/MtTjgmlUtps

How did the crowd react when the apostles came out speaking in lots of languages?

Most were amazed, some were confused, and some mocked them, accusing them of being drunk.

Imagine you are one of the disciples and a news reporter in the crowd approaches you. He says to you, “Some people here think that you and your friends are drunk. What do you have to say to those people?”

Write what you would say in response to that question?

·        What happened whilst you were in the room?

·        What have you and the other disciples come to believe?

·        What does this mean?

Perhaps you could get into role and record yourself as if being interviewed on BBC News! Maybe you could get a parent to be the news reporter.

Make sure you send me any clips that you record; I’d love to see them!

Thursday 21st May 2020

Good morning, Year 5.

I hope you all had a wonderful day yesterday. I had some great answers to the solvemoji.

The ice cone = 10 because there are 3 of the same that equal 30.

On the second line, 2 cones =20 so the doughnut must be worth 5.

13- 5 (the value of the doughnut) is 8. Split this number in half to give the value of the chocolate bars, which is 4.

The final line is tricky! The calculation is  10 x 10 + 8. This is because you need to look carefully as there are two doughnuts and two chocolate bars. 10 x 10= 100 +8 is 108. Well done to those of you who took part.
