World Book Day Fun!

On Thursday we had great fun dressing up as our favourite book characters  to celebrate World Book Day. The day was spent reading and sharing books as well as writing stories for our characters. Thank you to everyone who made the day such a success.

Spring Term Week 8 Reception

What a busy week of learning!

In RE, Reception have been learning about Lent and how we prepare for Easter by praying to bring us closer to God, by giving to others less fortunate than ourselves and by doing kind things for others.

The children wrote their Lenten promises which were used as part of the Lenten assembly on Friday. Reception also took part in a special Lenten Act of Worship with their Year 6 learning partners, which was led by Sofia, Jaineel, Oliver and Claudia.

On Thursday, Reception  joined the rest of the school in celebrating World Book Day. They were very excited and proud to show off their costumes alongside the older children and teachers and enjoyed listening to one another as they explained who they had dressed up as and why.

Next week, we are looking forward to British Science week which focusses on the theme ‘Journeys’.

Wishing you all a pleasant weekend,

Mrs Theo and Mrs Gymer

Year 2 Blog Week 22

It has been another fun-filled week of creative learning in Year 2. In Religion, we have been  focusing on our Lenten practices. Lent is a time when we pray, give up treats and do kind things for other people, as we prepare to celebrate the great feast of Easter. On Wednesday, KS1 came together for our Ash Wednesday Act of Worship to mark the start of Lent. In class, the children thought very carefully about their Lenten promises and placed them on the display in the hall during our whole school Lenten assembly.

In Maths, we have been concentrating on telling the time. We pretended to be clocks, turning clockwise and anti-clockwise. There were lots of hands turning … half turns, full turns, quarter turns. Everyone used great reasoning to prove their times. In English, we are enjoying reading The Adventures of the Dish and Spoon by Mini Grey. The children thought of lots of great questions to ask the characters in preparation for our character hot seating activity next week.

The children brought their favourite characters to life this week as we celebrated World Book Day. All of the costumes were brilliant and it was wonderful to hear the children talking about their characters and books with such enthusiasm. Year 2 proudly showed off their costumes at a whole school assembly. Great fun was had by all!

Home Learning: Maths worksheet mixed problems and Reading comprehension. World Book Day tokens placed safely in Home Learning packs.

Have a restful weekend!

8th March

This week was another busy week in Year 4.  On Monday, the children discussed their Lenten promises and the importance of praying, fasting and almsgiving.  As we talked about Jesus’ love for us, the children each created a crown of thorns.  It’s a new tradition in which you create a crown (from dough), add thorns (toothpicks), and  remove one thorn each time a good deed is done.

On Wednesday, we joined the rest of Key Stage 2 and celebrated Ash Wednesday Mass , receiving ashes on our forehead.  The children sang beautifully and Jamie and Heather brought up the Offertory gifts.

After swimming on Wednesday afternoon, the class continued with their violin lessons with Mrs Rodgers and their   their plucking skills.  She has commented that the children are focussed and working hard to learn their new instrument.

On Thursday the classroom was buzzing with excitement as the children came dressed up as a wide variety of book characters.  It is so encouraging to see the children taking part in various fun and creative reading and writing opportunities to really promote the importance of reading.  We took part in an online creative workshop about the author Jeff McKinney, author of Diary of a Wimpy Kid.  The children found out about his work and what inspired him to write.  They then went on to writing their own diary extract, making it as funny as they could.  The class giggled many times as they took turns to read aloud their extracts.

Spring 2 Week 7

Another busy week has flown by in Year 5! On Wednesday, we began our Lenten journey as we went to mass at OLSV to receive our ashes. The children behaved reverently throughout and sang beautifully. Today, the children took part in our Lenten assembly where they placed their promise on the wall alongside the rest of the school.

In R.E, we have been learning about the Stations of the Cross. Year 5 learnt what the Via Dolorosa is and researched the traditional stations. They also discovered what is now at each location and gave a presentation to the class about it. On Wednesday, Year 5 looked at artistic representations of the stations through the work of the nuns at Turvey Abbey as well as those on the wall of our church. Next week, they will create their own.

On Thursday we celebrated world book day. The outfits were amazing and represented a wide range of books. Well done, Year 5!

We have continued our writing based on The Adventures of Dish and Spoon. The children have been getting into role as Dish and using skills such as parenthesis to communicate her feelings. They have also been working on showing a characters feelings without telling their reader.

Next week, we are visiting the Houses of Parliament. The letter is now available for you on schoolcomms.

Have a great weekend.

Year 6 – 08/03/19

Well done to everyone for your efforts dressing up as your favourite book characters yesterday; there were some very impressive costumes!

In RE, as we enter into Lent, we have been learning about the Stations of the Cross. Each child has focused on a particular station and has produced artwork of their station, based on the beautiful Turvey Abbey interpretations.

Year 6 ended the week by inviting their Reception learning partners to an Act of Worship prepared by Claudia, Jaineel, Oliver and Sofia, for which the focus was Lent.

This week’s home learning (due Tuesday 12th March) is as follows:

Spellings Plural nouns (see below for word list) – spelling sentences to be written in pink Home Learning book.
Maths

Times tables

Continue to revise all times tables.
Reading At least 30 minutes of readtheory.org

Daily reading, with parent signature once a week.

RE On 19th March, Year 5 and 6 are going to the church to have a Mass for Lent. As this date is the feast day of St Joseph, the children are asked to do some research on this saint. St Joseph is not spoken about in the Bible after Luke’s account of a young Jesus in the temple, and so he is often overshadowed.

Here are some points for you to consider in your research:

What is he patron saint of?

What do we know about him from Scripture?

Are there any prayers devoted to him?

Spelling list (to be tested Friday 15th March)

Plural nouns

chimneys thieves
cities stories
families knives
hobbies babies
wolves leaves

Week 2 Spring 2

What a wonderful week, filled with creative learning. We enjoyed World Book Day in Year 3 by swapping books, dressing up as our favourite characters and talking about what we like about certain stories.

We have also made clay models of the Stations of the Cross and made Lenten Promises. The class were very well behaved at Mass on Wednesday also.

Our writing about The Dish and the Spoon is well underway and the children are trying hard to master their time tables.

Week 8

What a wonderful week we have had!  In Maths we have identifying and describing 2D shapes. We sorted shapes into groups according to their properties.

We have continued reading The Adventures of the Dish and the Spoon. The children have written wonderful wanted posters and a diary recount.

On Thursday it was World Book Day. All of the children looked fantastic in their costumes and they enjoyed describing their characters. We talked about how important it is to read regularly. We played pass the book. Can you think of the most unusual places to read? Take a photo reading in an usual place and send it in.

After reading the story The Scarecrows Wedding, we made scarecrows.  We used wooden spoons, different materials and straw. The scarecrows look great!

Our class garden is looking wonderful. What amazing gardeners we have in the class! The children planted the beautiful plants that you sent in. Thank you!

Have a lovely weekend.

Year 2 Blog Week 21

Welcome back! This first week has flown by. There is no stopping the Year 2 crew! In Religion, we have been learning about Fairtrade and designing chocolate bar wrappers to encourage everyone to buy Fairtrade.

The children have been using their reasoning skills in Maths to spot errors in calculations. In English, we have been using our editing skills to self-correct and improve our instructions for travelling through fairyland. In art, we have started work on our coil clay pots. We are looking forward to glazing them next week.

Year 2 thoroughly enjoyed putting on their gardening gloves and going out to prepare our class gardens. The children worked hard turning the soil, weeding the beds and planting some bulbs. We are casting our votes to find out what we will grow this year. Rainbow chard? Pumpkins? Brussels Sprouts? Results in next week.

In Computing, the children have started work on a film project on the theme: Our Future Online. We are thinking about ways of making the internet a great and safe place. We discussed our eSafety rules for being safe on the internet. If we have a concern … Block … Eject …. Tell!

Next week: Thursday 7th March is World Book Day! I cannot wait to see all the different characters that will be waiting at the Year 2 door on Thursday morning.

Home Learning: Character profile. Write up a short description about your World Book Day character for Thursday. Don’t forget to bring your book with you.

Have a lovely weekend.

Week 7

I hope you had a lovely half term. The children settled back into learning well. In Maths we have been learning doubles and halves and the relationship between them. We have been using a variety of resources to calculate and to show our answers. We had lots of fun playing ‘Doubles Bingo’

The whole school are reading and writing about the book The Adventures of the Dish and the Spoon. Year 1 have been thinking about the qualities of a good friend and describing how the dish and spoon showed they were good friends.

In RE we have been learning about Fairtrade. We looked at how chocolate was made and how Fairtrade helps the cocoa farmers. The children made posters to persuade people to buy Fairtrade chocolate.

The children have been busy weeding the gardens, getting it reading to plant our beautiful flowers. Thank you for the lovely plants you have sent in.

Next Thursday is World Book Day. The children can dress as a book character and bring in their favourite book to share with the class.

Homework – A book review on the children’s favourite book.

Have a great weekend.
