This week the children have planned and written their own newspaper report based on The True Story of the Three Little Pigs. The children focused on using prepositions, conjunctions and adverbs to make their report interesting to read. They have demonstrated their understanding of the features of newspaper reports.
In Maths, the children have been learning how we reorder and find complements when adding to help them to be more efficient and accurate.
In preparation for Advent, the children have been learning about the Jesse Tree. They have learnt about some of the members of Jesus’ family. We made a Jesse Tree for our class.
On Friday, we had a wonderful day at Celtic Harmony. The children had fun learning about flint knapping, they built dens, they made soup, hunted animals and listened to a story around the fire. I was impressed with their behaviour and their enthusiasm throughout the day. Thank you to Jack Flatley and April’s mum for coming with us.
It’s been another busy week of learning in Reception!
This week, the class have taken part in Anti-Bullying Week along with the rest of the school.
The children began the week by listening to the story of The Ugly Duckling and watching Disney’s 1939 adaptation of the story. You can watch it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=re4jlssB3Iw
They also enjoyed singing along with this Ugly Duckling song.
They learnt that bullying behaviour has key aspects:
It’s hurtful
It’s intentional
It’s repetitive
They watched this film clip and identified the bullying that took place.
Reception learnt about what they should do if they themselves are being bullied, or if they think that someone else is. They also thought about how they could be a good friend to everyone. The children made friendship cards and pictures and gave them to their friends. Reception also made anti-bullying posters, created homes for the ugly duckling, made masks and retold the story using small world.
As part of Friendship Friday, Reception joined their Year 6 Learning Partners in the November sunshine, for a special karate lesson together. They had so much fun together!
The highlight of the week was an exciting visit from Arthur’s mum Natalia, from Year 6. She is a bus driver and she came to tell the class all about how she helps the local community. She even brought her bus with her and managed to squeeze it through the gates and park it right outside the Reception classroom. Such skill! The children had so much fun exploring the double decker, opening and closing the doors, ringing the bell and sitting in the driver’s seat! Thank you so much to Natalia and Sullivan Buses for this wonderful experience!
The children in Year 4 published their Roman myths in the neatest before moving on to their next English genre, non-chronological reports. In Maths, they moved onto formal written methods for subtraction and played Bankruptcy, a competitive strategic game to put their operations into practice.
In Science, they used the school’s official site map to plan and later test fire alarms, thinking about volume, distance and accessibility. In RE, after looking at and understanding the symbols of the Jesse Tree, the class read the 7 ‘O’ Antiphons and researched their origins and importance. In History, they used artefacts to infer details about everyday life in Roman Britain whilst in PE, they further developed their understanding of ways of travelling and simple balances and created routines in small groups using apparatus.
This week, the children also had a special focus on anti-bullying, celebrating differences, learning about the power of a smile and about how to give and receive kindness. The class also looked at scenario cards and came up with strategies to deal with them safely and effectively. They completed a ‘kindness bingo’ activity and made ‘kindness fortune tellers’ to write kind comments to a classmate.
For our next D&T project, please may I ask that if you have any empty cereal boxes, you send them in please. We are making mechanisms, with levers and we need thinner types of cardboard pieces for our prototypes. Sadly, thicker cardboard does not work, so please do not send in packaging materials (boxes, etc) unless they are the thinner paper pouches (Amazon uses them often). Thank you very much, in advance.
I hope you’ll have a lovely weekend,
Ms Varga

Spelling
Please log onto EdShed and complete the activities to practice this week’s spelling words:
Please access the Advent Service songs and lyrics by clicking on the relevant blog on our page and start learning the songs by heart. We have already started practicing in class but it is essential that all children know the songs by the time we go to Church.
Friday was Odd Sock Day! We wore odd socks to celebrate the end of Anti-Bullying Week and to remind us that we are all different and important. The children worked hard this week to complete our Kindness Bingo Challenge. Year 1 paired up with Year 4 for Friendship Friday. They shared the playground at lunchtime together, a session of Karate in the afternoon, followed by shared golden time to finish off their day.
Year 1 have learnt ‘ay’ May I play? And ‘oy’ Toy for a boy in their first Phase 5 sounds this week. They worked very well to apply their new sounds in their spellings this week.
Enjoy the weekend,
Miss Lambie
Please may children have their reading books in their bags every day.
Please can you spare any boxes of tissues, we are very sneezy at the moment!
Mathletics and Spelling Shed have been set. I have sent home a Phase 5 phonic mat for support.
Henceforth all ages call me blessed, call me blessed.
My soul glorifies the Lord, my spirit rejoices
My God forever he will be, bless his holy name.
He scatters the proud hearted,
casts the mighty from their thrones.
His mighty arm before me,
In strength he raises the lowly, raises the lowly.
My soul glorifies the Lord, my spirit rejoices
My God forever he will be, bless his holy name.
He fills the starving with plenty,
but empty sends the rich away.
From age to age his mercy,
The mercy promised us forever, promised forever.
My soul glorifies the Lord, my spirit rejoices
My God forever he will be, bless his holy name.
On The Road To Bethlehem
Joseph watched the campfire slowly burning out
And spread a blanket over Mary where she lay
He knelt down beside her on the ground
Bowed his head and he began to pray
Here we are on the road to Bethlehem
I promise you I’d take care of your son
Mary’s tired and I’m doing the best I can
And I’m trusting you from here to kingdom come
If I close my eyes and go to sleep
Please watch over both of them for me
on the road to Bethlehem
Mary felt the baby move and she woke up
she felt Joseph sleeping by her side
she reached out in the darkness and touched his hand
tried not to wake him as she cried
Here we are on the road to Bethlehem
I promised you I’d take care of your son
Joseph’s tired and I’m doing the best I can
And I’m trusting you from here to kingdom come
And, if I close my eyes and go to sleep
Please watch over both of them for me
On the road to Bethlehem
Joseph felt her crying and he reached out
Held her in his arms and they both prayed
Here we are on the road to Bethlehem
We promised you we’d take care of your son
And we’re so tired and we’re doing the best we can
And trusting you from here to kingdom
To watch over us and give us strength and peace
While the saviour of the whole world gently sleeps
On the road to Bethlehem
Love Shone Down
I had a dream that I was standing on a hillside
And all the lights of town
were shining far below
When up in the air beautiful voices
Sing a new song, let everyone know,
Oh and love shone down over the hills and over the valleys, Oh and love shone down over the world
Somebody spoke to me
I knew it was an angel
He said there’s something
that I think you ought to know.
Then he just smiled, said don’t be afraid now.
Sing a new song, let everyone know
Oh and love shone down over the hills and over the valleys, Oh and love shone down over the world
And then he told me all about the baby Jesus,
How to find him where exactly I should go.
Then he was joined by millions of others
Sing a new song, let everyone know
Oh and love shone down over the hills and over the valleys, Oh and love shone down over the world
Well did I dream or was I really on that hillside On that Christmas night so very long ago, When he was born Jesus our Saviour Sing a new song let everyone know
Oh and love shone down over the hills and over the valleys, Oh and love shone down over the world
We Are Waiting
Light a candle in the darkness And let it burn bright. Advent is the season To put all our wrongs to right.
Let’s fill the earth with light and hope, Each and every day For the birth of Jesus Isn’t far away.
We are waiting, we are waiting For the coming of our King. For every face to have a smile And every Christmas bell to ring.
We are waiting, we are waiting For the birthday of our Lord. We are waiting for the coming of the Word!
Like the people in the Bible In the days of old. The Son of God is coming As the prophets have foretold.
Mighty God, Wonder Counsellor, Emmanuel his name. And the world will tell forever Of his fame.
We are waiting, we are waiting For the coming of our King. For every face to have a smile And every Christmas bell to ring.
We are waiting, we are waiting For the birthday of our Lord. We are waiting for the coming of the Word!

In History, the children have been learning about Stone Age houses and how they were built then compared them with houses today.
In a few weeks we will be celebrating Advent, the children have been learning about the signs and symbols of Advent. They will be observing the changing in the church, school and at home during this special season. This week four children planned and led a Liturgical Prayer. They chose the activities, prayers and resources and set up an altar in the middle of the circle. Well done Oliver, Emilia, Leo B and Connor!
On Friday, we observed two minutes of silence for Armistice Day. Then we went on a pilgrimage around the classrooms to see the beautiful displays of poppies and photos of people we want to remember. Well done to all the children who made amazing poppies for our class.
