Reception Week Beginning 19.9.22

Stick Man (TV Movie 2015) - IMDb

This week, Reception have been focussing on the story ‘Stick Man’ by Julia Donaldson. The children absolutely loved this story! You can find a fantastic adaptation on the BBC iPlayer here:  https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b06t09rk/stick-man

The class started the week off by going for a walk around the school field on the hunt for Stick Man. Sadly, they didn’t find any sign of him, but they found lots of fantastic sticks that they brought back to the classroom instead! The children thought about lots of different uses for the sticks. Ideas included: a bridge for an ant, a handle on a grass cutter, a bicycle frame and a broom. Some children made cards to send to Stick Man’s family and lots of children enjoyed the challenge of building a tower higher than the longest stick.

Many Reception children in the class are experiencing difficulty using scissors, and so this week, they have been practising their cutting skills and creating beautiful collages in the process! Following on from last week, when they drew self-portraits, Reception have also been painting their own portraits this week.

This afternoon, Reception met their Year Six reading partners for the very first time. They all exchanged cards and pictures and spent time getting to know each other. The children will meet up for half an hour every Friday from now onwards.

Next week, the children are going to be thinking about growing and when they were babies. If possible, please provide your child with one photo of themselves as a baby. Each child will be talking about their picture and they will also be used as part of a class display. Thank you!

Families with little babies- if anyone is able to come into class one morning next week and talk to the class about how you take care of your baby, please speak to Ms Pemberton on Monday morning, thank you!

Next Thursday, we have our Phonics Meeting for parents at 2.30pm. If you are unable to make this meeting, we will make sure that you are given any handouts and a copy of the PowerPoint will be available for you to view on the school website.

Just a reminder-we will be starting phonics on Monday morning. Please check your child’s book bag that evening, as we will also be sending home a phonics home learning book. Over the next week, we will be sending home a reading book, along with a class library book too.

Have a wonderful weekend,

The Reception Team

Autumn 1 Week 3

This morning we had our beginning of the year Mass. The children sang, responded and behaved beautifully.

In Maths, we have continued to develop an understanding of place value of 3 digit numbers. The children have solved problems to demonstrate their understanding.

In English, the children wrote a persuasive speech as one of the characters in the book Wars and Peas. They summarised the story using adverbs of time. Next week, the children will be planning and writing their own fable.

In Science, the children have been learning about why humans and animals have skeletons and naming some of the bones in the human body.

In Religion, we listened to Genesis 1 and Genesis 2 Creation stories and the children make paintings of what they would put in their own gardens.

Year 4 had yet another busy week. In Maths, the children finished their first unit of place value and moved on to number magnitude as a preparation towards rounding whole numbers. They used strips of blank paper to identify crucial benchmark numbers, before placing mystery numbers on their number lines, thinking about the relative size of numbers in context.

In English, the class completed their first extended writing when composing effective poems describing a mythical creature. Very well done, the poems read beautifully! In Art, we looked at rulemaking and using colourful lines to create pattern. In Computing, the children explained the difference between data and information, whilst in RE, they wrote paragraphs reflecting on God as a creator, with reference to the Book of Genesis from the Old Testament. In PE, we practiced dodging and passing to build towards invasion games.

We also practiced our multiplication tables daily, in a competitive setting and most of the children could recall some of the key facts in our current 10 sec/question time. Good job!

Thank you for those of you, who kindly supplemented the class with boxes of tissues for the colder season, any further contribution would be much appreciated.

I hope you have a lovely weekend,

Ms Varga

Year 5 – 23/09/22

Although this has been a shorter week than usual, it has been no less busy.

On Wednesday, Year 5 found out about a very important leadership role that is new to our school. The class are going to be Caritas Ambassadors, which means that they are going to be activists for social change in the local area. As a class, we will have weekly sessions that will equip us with a strong understanding of Catholic Social Teaching and how we can put it into action in our daily lives. In keeping with the new line of our school mission prayer, we are going to develop the tools we need to build a better world.

Also this week:

    • In English, we have continued to focus on building vocabulary, and the children wrote really effective poems about a wolf crying in the night;
    • In Maths, our place value understanding is continuing to grow and we learnt how to count in powers of 10;
    • In Science, we compared gestation periods in different mammals. Next week, we will be looking at whether there is a relationship between an adult animal’s mass and its gestation period;
    • In RE, we have been practising how to navigate the Bible and have started learning about the Genesis creation stories;
    • In PE, we had a our second swimming session;
    • In French, we learnt how to say the alphabet and how to spell our names in French. Here’s the song if you wanted to practise!

Miss Donatantonio

Year 5 – 16/09/22

Welcome to the end of another week! Our week began with a karate session, which allowed the children to revise some of the stances that they learnt last year.

Our art topic this half term is about typography, so our art lesson today allowed the children to experiment with cut-out typography. Have a look at some of their creations! Also this week:

  • We learnt about metre in music and tried conducting;
  • We continued an unfinished story by Roald Dahl started called The Eyes of Mr Croaker to celebrate Roald Dahl day;
  • We practised writing similes and metaphors in English;
  • We compared and ordered numbers up to 1,000,000 in Maths;
  • We had our first swimming session of the term
  • We had a visit from Ofsted! The children behaved and participated beautifully in front of our visiting inspector and did the school proud. – well done!

In light of the long weekend for national mourning, there is no home learning set this week.

See you on Tuesday.

Miss Donatantonio

Reception Week Beginning 12.9.22

We said goodbye to some very shattered children at hometime today, after completing their first full week at Pope Paul! The class have settled in tremendously well, so much so, that we were even able to bring them into the main hall this morning to participate in the whole school assembly!

This week, the children have been thinking about the themes in the story Owl Babies by Martin Waddell. This beautiful story tells the tale of three little owl babies who wake up to find out that their mummy isn’t in the nest! They are all worried about being separated from her and are concerned that she won’t come back for them. The children were able to really relate to the story, as they too have been separating from their own families in the morning, which has been tricky for some children in the class this week. Amongst many other things, the class have been making nests and owls from lots of different materials, acting out the story and drawing pictures of their own families. They have also created their own self-portraits and helped to create a shop in the outside role-play area.

Unfortunately, we are still unable to put photographs of the children on the blog, as the office still doesn’t have all of the data sheets in from parents. If you haven’t done so already please give them into the office asap. We have so many lovely photos taken that we are desperate to share with you!

Finally, thank you so much to all of the parents who took the time to fill in the Ofsted parent view survey, who said kind words of encouragement to staff, wrote a lovely email to the inspector supporting us, or gave us cards or treats for the staffroom. Your overwhelming generosity has made a stressful week, much easier to get through!

Have a lovely weekend,

The Reception Team

Week 2 Year 1

Week 2 w/b 12.09.2022

What a week for our school! Thank you for all your support and encouragement; it really kept us going! I am so proud Year 1 for their learning and behaviour this week. It feels like I have been their teacher for more than just two weeks already! They were calm, considerate and shared such wonderful questions about their learning. I am looking forward to teaching them for the rest of this year and working with you to support them the best we can.

Thank you to those who attended meet the teacher meeting this afternoon and I will upload the Power Point to the Year 1 page for you to refer too. Remember to please come and ask me any questions you may have and I will send home the letter formation rhymes with the reading books next week.

I wish you a restful weekend and please stay safe if you are travelling to London. Year 1 will reflect on the life of our The Queen when we return to school on Tuesday,

Miss Lambie

Science- Humans and Animals
Our experiment this week:

Do you think the tallest child has the largest feet?

Well, this was a fun experiment, if not a little smelly! Year 1 made their prediction, discussed the best way to find out the answer and got to work! We came up with lots of ways to ensure it was a fair test and measured everyone’s height and feet just to be sure. Our results were different from the prediction majority! Our tallest child did not have the largest feet!

Autumn 1 Week 2

We have had a busy week in Year 3. It was lovely to see some of you at the Meet the Teacher talk. If you missed it, all of the information is on the Year 3 blog.

The children had their first karate lesson on Monday. Their focus and concentration was excellent.

In our English lessons, we have continued reading and analysing fables. Our focus was around the book War and Peas. The children became one of the characters in the story, their acting skills were great. This supported their descriptions of the characters. Then they became news reporters and wrote a news report using prepositions about what happened during the fight scene.

In Maths, we have been regrouping three digit numbers in a variety of ways. Children have been using resources, drawing pictures and recording as a number sentence.

In Science, we have been learning about healthy living. We have learnt about the different food groups and how it is important to have a balances, healthy diet.

On Wednesday, we had a road safety talk about how we cross roads safely and how to keep active.

Friday, 16th September 2022

We began the week with karate in Year 4. I was very impressed to see the children’s excellent focus and concentration during our first session of stances.

In Maths, the children carried on extending their understanding of the value of each digit in a 4 digit number and applied this when playing competitive, strategic Maths games.

In English, the class developed dialogue to show character and started building vocabulary banks as a way of planning for writing. Next we, we will write our poems and after a short editing session, the children will be publishing them in neat.

In Science, the children looked at the basic parts of  the human digestive system and wrote very entertaining diary entries, as the food themselves travelling through their bodies.

In RE, we looked at the structure of the Bible before spending some time on the first book of the Old Testament, Genesis.

In Art, the children experimented with lines whilst also using a whole punching technique to create sensory drawings.

It has been lovely seeing so many of you during our Meet and Greet session, however in case you missed it, all the information is available on the Year 4 blog.

I wish you a lovely long weekend and a safe trip to London if you are attending the funeral in person,

Ms Varga
