Friday 16th September

Another week has flown by in Year 6. On Monday, we welcomed back Sensei Michael and took part in a karate lesson. On Tuesday we joined with many parishioners for the 10am mass on the feast day of St. John Chrysostom.  Fr Shaun spoke to the children in his homily about their role as Year 6 children and developing their leadership skills in the year ahead.

In English this week, we continued our theme of leadership and the children began writing speeches to apply for their chosen role. We will finish them off and record them next week. A lot of thought has been given by the children towards this work in class and many children produced speeches (as part of their home learning) to say in their house team meetings today.  On Wednesday the class attended their first swimming session which they enjoyed. On Thursday, the class took part in an online road safety lesson. The children greatly impressed the leader of the session with their knowledge. They also learnt some new facts about stopping distance and booster seat laws.

This afternoon, we spent time talking about the queen and the events that are taking place at the moment and over this coming bank holiday weekend.

Wishing you and your family a wonderful long weekend.

Year 6 Leadership Day

Good morning children.

The focus this morning for you as a house team is to examine your house saint and find out these things about him/her:

Key Questions:

Who was s/he and what did s/he do?

How can we learn from her/him in our leadership?

What qualities of Jesus does she/he display?

With this information, you will present your findings to the rest of the class ensuring that each team member plays a part in the presentation.  There are some web links below each house saint to aid you in your research.

St Bernadette

St Francis of Assisi

 St Louise de Marillac

St Vincent de Paul

Links: Click on the picture of your house saint and you will be taken to a website for you to look at.

Week 1 w.b. 5th September 2022

Welcome to Year 1!

Year 1 had a lovely start to the new school year and were excited to share all their news with their friends again. They joined the first school assembly and learned about The Year of Pilgrimage and wrote what they can do to grow closer to God on a footstep which will be displayed in the hall. In class Year 1 took part in collective worship and decorated their prayer space and table to reflect the start of creation season in ordinary time. Year 1 learnt about some important pilgrimages that Catholics go on and used the construction resources to build their own replicas that now decorate the prayer table.

P.E.

Our PE days are Monday (inside the hall for Karate) and Friday (outside movement skills on the field, playground, or hall if weather permits.)

Children should wear their full Pope Paul PE kits to school on those days, including sweatshirts rather than school jumpers or cardigans for colder weather. Please wear a plain white or black t-shirt until house teams are allocated.

Home learning

We will continue to assess the children in phonics and reading over the next two weeks before sending reading books home. This will ensure that we are accurately sending books with sounds in that the children can read and enjoy with you at home.

The Phonics meeting on Thursday 29th September will be a repeat of last term so please only attend if you missed the previous one. I can discuss any phonics queries with you at our meet teacher meeting next Friday 16th September at 2:30pm in the school hall.

Please ensure that all belongings are named clearly. Please check the school bags to make sure that nothing belonging to someone else has accidentally been taken home. Children need a water bottle and hat in school every day please. Any boxes of tissues would be greatly appreciated.

Mrs Mocia will be covering on Monday and I will see you all on Tuesday,

Have a safe and happy weekend,

Miss Lambie

The children added new bedding plants to our memorial pots

It has been a lovely start back for Year 6. The children have been very interested in the new topics we have introduced this week in Maths (place value based on large numbers), English (looking at the topic of leadership ), RE (launching our Year of Pilgrimage)…the list goes on!

The children were happy to be back together again and of course have embraced the responsibilities that Year 6 children are given.  From our whole school assembly on Monday to today’s Friday’s assembly, members of the class have acted responsibly and assisted for many events this week including greeting our new reception children and their parents and assisting the new reception class today at lunchtime.  Well done children!

On Monday, in class, the children took part in a class liturgy and discussed their hopes for the coming year.  Their hopes were written on paper rolled into a scroll and then added to the class prayer table.  Every year we examine our Mission prayer and this year, with an extra part added to it, the children spent time talking about what it means to them.

On Thursday, Year 6 met with Lorcan, who has come to stay in our parish. He will be working with the class every week.  The children quizzed Lorcan on many areas and were especially intrigued to find out what football team he supported!

Home Learning this week is:

Mathletics and Timestable Rockstars.

Prepare your House Captain speech should you want to apply for this role.  In class the children are writing speeches for the remaining roles in addition to a house captain speech.  Please can you encourage your child to think about what they can bring to one of the many roles available to them.

[Liturgy leader, Sports Captain,  Fairtrade Leader, Laudato-Si Leader, Junior Travel Ambassador].

Looking forward to seeing you at our ‘Meet the Teacher’ meeting on Monday at 2:30pm. Our PE sessions for this year are: Monday and Wednesday.  The children will also be starting their swimming lessons next Wednesday as well.  A letter was sent home to you about this during the week.

Wishing you a lovely weekend.

Mrs McNamara and Mrs Lines.

Our Year of Pilgrimage Prayer:

God of our journey

Be with us during this year of pilgrimage

And guide our feet along this path of life.

Be our companion by day and night

And may we feel your presence at our side.

Keep us safe and  help us to grow closer to you as we strive to build a better world.

Through Christ our Lord

Amen

Welcome to Year 3!

Year 3 have settled well to their new class and have worked very hard this week. We started our new year with a Liturgy for the new school year. The children shared their fears and hopes for the year. The children thought of ways they could walk with Jesus this year and added their footprint to the display in the hall.

In English, we have been reading Fables and identifying the morals in different fables. The children have been learning the features of a fable to support them when planning and writing their own fable.

In Maths, we have been making, drawing and partitioning 3 digit numbers. They have been learning about the importance of 0 as a place holder. Please practise reading 3 digit numbers.

Lorcan, our new Seminarian visited us on Thursday and the children asked him some fantastic questions to get to know him.

In Religion, we reflected on how we can live out the Mission Prayer in our lives. We began the Year of Pilgrimage by looking at different locations where Christians go on pilgrimage and why some places are special to Christians. Speak to family members who have been on a pilgrimage.

In Geography, we read thermometers to learn about the different climates in the world.

Our PE days are Monday and Wednesday. Children must wear their PE kits on those days.

Welcome to Reception

Welcome Images – Browse 813,052 Stock Photos, Vectors, and Video | Adobe StockWelcome to Reception!

It has been an absolute pleasure getting to know all of our new children and their families this week.

The children have enjoyed exploring their new indoor and outdoor learning environments and have already impressed us so much with their fantastic learning behaviour and listening skills, during both carpet time and child initiated learning time!

Today was our first day as a whole class together. Reception started off the morning by participating in a special prayer time, where they learnt a song and heard the school’s mission prayer for the first time.

At lunchtime, the children were fantastic at carrying their own lunch trays back to the classroom and clearing their trays away, when they had finished eating.

This afternoon, after singing some number songs and playing some number games, Reception went for a walk around the school grounds and had a class photo taken.

We have sent home some very tired children tonight!

Unfortunately, we are unable to upload any photos this week, as the school office is still waiting for all of the data collection sheets to be returned; as you know, these sheets include photographic consent. Hopefully, by next week, we will be able to include photos too.

Have a wonderful weekend,

The Reception Team

Autumn 1 Week 1

Welcome to Year 2

The children have had a lovely start to the new school year and were excited to share all their holiday news. They learnt about The Year of Pilgrimage in assembly and wrote what they can do to grow closer to God on footsteps, which are displayed in the hall.

In class Year 2 took part in collective worship and decorated their prayer table  and board to reflect the start of the year. They also learnt what a pilgrimage is and why people go on them.

In Maths the children have been revising number bonds and making numbers to 20 using doubles.

Friday, 9th September 2022

Year 4, had a very busy first week back and I am proud of how well the children all adjusted to their new classroom and settled into their routines.

In English, we began our first unit of poetry and the class had opportunity to act out some of the pieces we used for inspiration. They also created word banks and thought about description as a preparation towards writing their own poem, next week. They produced story maps as well, Pie Corbett style, to show their understanding of poems.

In Maths, after learning about Roman numerals, that we use for our dates in Year 4, the children began some learning on place value, using concrete resources and pictorial representation to show their understanding of the value of each digit in 4 digit numbers.

In Science, the class gathered ideas and reactivated their earlier learning on ‘Animals including humans’, our first unit, before looking at types of enquiries.

They also copied and decorated our new Mission Prayer, with the added line of ‘to build a better world’ and explained in paragraphs it’s true meaning, whilst also looking at why Christians go on pilgrimage. The children completed a short pilgrimage themselves to the Peace Garden, to help them understand the concept of journeys. In addition, they used watercolour technique to create’ journey’ paintings, which are now displayed in class.

In PE, we practiced multi-skills, including, running, dodging, passing and catching balls whilst in Geography, the class began their first unit of Megacities looking at atlases, maps and satellite images.

I hope you have a restful weekend, the children certainly deserve one after their hard work,

Ms Varga
