30th November

This week, we continued our writing focus on Wesley in Westlandia and wrote up our diary entries.  The children worked hard in ensuring that their editing skills were put to great use – they have created another wonderful piece of writing.  Well done!

On Monday we joined with Year 3’s and attended the Gymnastics Display at Dame Alice Owen School which I know that the children thoroughly enjoyed.  It was also lovely for the children to see some past students from Pope Paul School in the audience too and performing as well.  On Wednesday following a class reflection, the children joined the rest of the key stage 2 classes in Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament which was led by Fr Shaun.  Some of the children from Year 4 sang and they did this with such reverence.  During this time Fr Shaun invited them to embrace the silence where they could talk to Christ in their minds but also encouraged them to just sit and focus entirely on the Blessed Sacrament.

Also this week the children had an indoor PE lesson led by Mr Cowan on team building skills and they rose to the challenge.  In RE we started to find out about Luke the Gospel writer and examine some gospel readings from Luke’s Gospel that will be the focus over the next few weeks of Advent.  National Tree Week took place this week too and as part of this the children were fact finding about why trees are special and explored the trees in the grounds of the school.

On Thursday, we had our drumming session with Caz and learnt how to beat out questions and their answers on their drums  ……Heston and Angelo were voted the best duet by the rest of the class for their drumming!

Today, Friday,  we wrote messages and letters to Francessca wishing her a speedy recovery, continued with our Tudor Narrative writing and looked back over the topic of factors and multiples in Maths.  We have started to learn our songs for our Advent service., the Year 6’s chopped up lots of fruit which you have sent in with your child(ren) and the children in Year 4 sampled the various fruits.  Many of the children enjoyed the kiwi fruit, pineapple and pomegranate!  and I was delighted to see that many of the children had a go at eating them even though they had not seen the fruits before.

To complete this week of learning

Homework this weekend are the words and songs for the Advent Service that have been given on the sheet sent home this evening.

See you at the Christmas Fayre!

Have a lovely weekend.

23rd November

This week the children have continued to use their knowledge of their timetables, looked more into the rules of divisibility and have moved onto factors and multiples!  They especially enjoyed completing the NRich game of Factors and Multiples online with their partner so it was lovely to hear the key vocabulary being used during their conversations in class whilst trying to create the longest chain! here is the link if you would like to have a go! https://nrich.maths.org/5468

Solving a factors puzzle as a team.
Working together as a team  “Oh no!  what are the factors!”

This week the children have also finished their recounts as part of our Whole School writing project based on Paul Fleischman’s book  Weslandia. The children put a lot of effort into their editing and handwriting. Well done!

In Science, the children have been introduced to their new topic , electricity. Children have put forward interesting questions to enquire later. They also thought of ways to save electricity. Our Switch off fortnight is well underway and our monitors are taking their responsibility to turn light off very seriously.

Also this week, the class have had the opportunity to work with Mr Cowan, our trainee teacher to lead us in our PE lesson of dribbling this week. The children enjoyed this session very much.

Have a lovely weekend.

16th November

This week we have focused on our school themes of Anti-Bullying and the UK Parliament.

The children completed some research for homework last weekend on Parliament and from this home learning, they have shown what they can discuss what  the UK Parliament is and what democracy means.  As a class, the children voted for two members to represent Year 4 in our school parliament.  The two children with the highest votes were:  Angelo and Heather.  Congratulations to them on their new positions.

On Thursday, the children had their second drumming session in which they participated with such enthusiasm and today, Friday, it was odd socks day and one in which the children participated with excitement.
Homework this week will be:

Spellings, Reading, Maths (Mathletics) and SPAG online.

Due to my error in programming the Mathletics, the children were not able to gain access to their learning activities.

I have solved the problem (as there had been a difficulty in logging on) and would like them to complete as many of the multiplication (timetables) lessons that have been set for them.  I thank you for your patience with the technical blip that occurred!

PLEASE DO NOT FORGET: we need white contributions for our class hamper box that will be part of the Main Raffle at the Christmas Fayre.  Thank you to the children who have brought items in.

Have a lovely weekend.

9th November

Although the children have only been back for four days, the week has been an eventful one!

In RE we have focused on the Shabbat – the sabbath. The children enjoyed finding out about how the Shabbat is the most important Jewish festival and lasts from just before sunset on Friday to just after sunset on Saturday every week.

The children were interested in this special celebration and enjoyed eating the challah (bread).

In English the children have examined the story of Westlandia by P. Fleischman as this will be the stimulus for their English Writing over the next few weeks.  As part of their Tudor topic work, the children have started to write their own narrative writing using a historical stimulus: ‘The Pardon’.  Please ask them about their ideas etc…

In Maths today, the children looked at calculations and learnt how to create and regroup arrays for multiplication.  They were introduced to the words: row, column, array, factor and product.

On Thursday, the children had their very first Djembe Drumming lesson with Caz.   Throughout the lesson, they learnt how to hold their drum, produce a range of different sounds with high volume! and follow their peers in the many activities that they were given examining the tempo, dynamics and pitch.

Tito and Matthew L were given the task of leading the group and they did this competently.

Please remember that our class hamper needs to be filled!  Our colour is Winter White.  Our class hamper will then be wrapped and included as raffle prizes at the Christmas Fayre.

26th October

This week Year 4 have been focusing on the USA.

We’ve learnt about the native Americans, the physical features of the country, made our own dream catchers, totem poles, american muffins, experienced line dancing, designed our own american 100 dollar bill  and in RE researched the life of  St Kateri who was made a saint in 2012.

This afternoon the children did PE with coach Dugan and worked in teams using the ball skills that they have been developing.

It was lovely to see so many parents from Year 4 this morning at our Harvest Assembly and in class afterwards allowing the children to share their  work with you.

We would like to invite you into the classroom on Tuesday 6th November when the children would like to perform to you some of the tunes that they have been learning on the recorder.

Have a wonderful half-term!

Mrs McNamara and Ms Varga.

Pilgrimage To Rome and St Paul VI Celebration Day

Today the school has been filled with excitement and joy as we celebrated the canonization of Pope Paul VI. We started the day with an assembly where everyone was presented with a St Paul VI prayer card. The children then enjoyed an extra break and Fairtrade treat in the sunshine. Following the theme of peace, the children spent the morning creating flags, designs, sketches and mosaics as well as continuing their research on Pope Paul VI. This afternoon we released doves of peace in the playground as a symbol of our continuing mission, following the charism of Pope Paul, to support peace and justice for all. Our pilgrimage to Rome to share in this very special moment was inspiring and uplifting. We felt privileged to be able to represent our school community in this important event. Father Shaun also attended the Mass in St Peter’s Square and we were all invited by Alex (our Seminarian)to visit the English College for Mass and then refreshments, enjoying the view of Rome from the rooftop terrace! Throughout the weekend we remembered our Pope Paul School Community and prayed for the continuing success of our school. We are very fortunate to have a wonderful group of staff who are happy to make a financial and time commitment in support of our community. Thank you ladies!

Well, what a busy week!

On Monday, the children worked alongside the Reception Class and designed their own religious artefacts.  They worked fabulously together and were very proud of the designs they created.

As our focus has been St Paul VI, the children have been doing a lot of work based on his life.  The children wrote up their lovely Pope Paul VI prayers and they will be added to a special class prayer book.

In Maths the children carried out a number investigation using their number skills with competence.  They had such fun doing it.

Today we have been celebrating the canonization of Pope Paul VI and the day began with a special assembly in which all the children, teachers and parents were presented with St Paul VI prayer cards.  Afterwards, we joined the rest of the school in the large playground, where we had some juice and chocolate!

This afternoon, we witnessed the release of a dozen doves and flew our flags with pride.  The children created their own ‘peace’ flags.

This week we continued our work on William Sharington using drama to help us think about the characters for our narrative writing pieces.  The children took on each role with consideration and acted well.  They took turns to watch each groups’ scenes and have been given advice on what to improve upon.  I look forward to seeing their improved scenes next week!

In Maths we have been revising the concept of regrouping which we looked at last week and learning about ‘re-balancing’.

In RE we have been focusing on Pope Paul VI and his canonisation which takes place in Rome this weekend.

Home Learning is a whole school focus on Pope Paul VI.

We look forward to reading your lovely prayers to St Paul VI.

Have a lovely weekend.  I’ll light a candle for your intentions in Rome.

5th October

This week, we have been working hard understanding the next part of our Maths Learning Sequence – regrouping- by using our knowledge of complements to 10, 100 or 1000.  We completed our Poetry unit and will be starting work on persuasive writing next week.

In RE we used our assembly and notes about St Vincent de Paul to write our own biography on him and his charism to understand how his actions affected or have affected others.  In Science our work on investigating Sound continues.

Over the next two weeks, our science homework is based on using our knowledge of sound to make an instrument.  Click on the links below for ideas:

28th September, 2018

Another busy week in Year 4 which ended with our class assembly on Friday on St Vincent de Paul.  Well done to all the children on speaking so clearly and acting brilliantly.

In Maths we have finished off our work on rounding and in English, have continued our work on Poetry.

Coach Dugan continued on developing our team work skills…we had great fun searching the school playground and field for clues for a final result which we checked in with Coach Dugan.

It was lovely to watch your teamwork skills of cooperation and decision making in good use.

Homework has been handed out and the focus is on creating your own sound poem.  Any problems, please come in and attend Homework Club on Monday at lunchtime.

Have a lovely weekend.
