Story starter!

They had been waiting outside the clocktower all day. Soon, it would be time.

The cloud spat bullets of rain down upon the expectant crowd, before the droplets bounced off the taut canopies of the hundreds of umbrellas that flooded the cobbled square.

Eager eyes became glued to the long, black hands of the clock face. They seemed to be moving in slow motion, as if reluctant to reach the fateful hour; the fateful hour which would determine all their fates…

Sentence challenge!

Can you find the personification in this paragraph?

Can you use similes to describe the scene?

The rain poured down like…

The closely packed umbrellas looked like…

The red umbrella stood out like…

Write another paragraph of this story using similes and personification.

WALT- use figurative language.

Parents note:

To extend your child, you could take a look at other types of figurative language using the link below and try and include one.

Monday 23rd March Learning

Year 5 Learning

Dear Parents,

Each morning, I will post a blog detailing the learning activities for the day. Notes for parents will be written in red to give guidance on the learning. Please do not worry if you cannot achieve all tasks in a day. Each family will face different challenges at this time and so it may not always be possible. This learning is provided and for you to use how you chose.

In addition to the information given each day, I would also like to highlight some other resources to you. Each day, The Body Coach will be running a 30 minute PE lesson from his YouTube channel. I highly recommend your child takes part in this. Now they are not at school, their amount of daily exercise may drop significantly and so it is important to keep active. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCAxW1XT0iEJo0TYlRfn6rYQ. This will now act as their PE lessons for the week.

For maths, I often use resources by Gareth Metcalf to extend learning and build problem solving in class. He will now be posting lessons on his page to encourage deeper thinking skills and could be done if your child has completed the daily maths activity. http://www.iseemaths.com/home-lessons/ They become available at 9am but can be accessed after this time. Please also remember that OLSV will be live for mass at 10am.

Here is our overview for today:

Maths WALT- calculate using long division.

Parents note: In Year 4, your children will have used this method to divide a 3 digit number by a one digit. It is generally something children find quite tricky, so please do not worry if your child does not understand it straight away. Don’t be afraid to use smaller numbers to practice with if this is the case. I have included a link to a tutorial on basic division to revise key concepts before moving on.

Watch these online tutorials:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KGMf314LUc0

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LGqBQrUYua4

Then complete the online mathletics activity set.

Extension:

This should be completed in the maths book given. Children can use a calculator to check their answers.

English

Story starter!

At first it had been an eye; an enormous, lidless, green eye, hovering there above the road. A few hours later, another eye had joined it.

It was then that people had started to take notice. Passers-by stopped and stared, wide-mouthed, at the mysterious vision that had appeared seemingly out of nowhere.

By the middle of the night, the full green face could be seen. The world was now taking notice. Broadcast on TV screens across the planet, the vision was causing quite a stir. People watched expectantly, glued to their televisions and radios and laptops around the world, waiting for the next part of the puzzle to unravel…

Sentence challenge!

Which sentences contains two verbs?

Can you use interesting verbs in your writing today? How about some of these:

Sneaking, leap, stalk, observe, tip-toe, avoid, peer and ooze

Complete the story in your book.

WALT- use a range of verbs in my writing.

Parents note:

To extend your child, they could use different forms of past tense verbs. We have already covered this so it is not a new concept. Try and use at least one of each in this writing. These are:

Simple past: I baked a cake.

Past perfect: I had baked a cake.

Past progressive: I was baking a cake.

Past perfect progressive: I had been baking a cake.

Underline each one in a different colour.

It is not essential that your child copies out the beginning of the story. However, if they could benefit from handwriting practice, this is a great opportunity!

Sick sentences!

These sentences are ‘sick’ and need help to get better. Can you help?

It was a dark night. A big face appeared in the sky.

Parents note: This is a free site with no login details. Our current spelling list will be suspended for now. It would be a great benefit for the children to learn the Year 5 and 6 spelling words. This week, every day, they should access this site to practice spelling rule 53.

Science Odd one out

Which picture is the odd one out? Explain your reasons.

WALT- reason scientifically

Geography Use google earth, atlases and online maps to research south America. Name the countries, mountain ranges, capitals and  rivers of the continent.

WALT- identify the countries, mountain ranges, capital cities and rivers of south America.

Science Week

Biscuit Dunking

Along with the rest of the school, Year 5 took part in putting some biscuits to the dunking test. We worked hard to ensure the test was fair and put measures in place to ensure only one variable was changed. Year 5 had different ideas about the best methodology. Some children wanted to hold the biscuit in place, whilst others wanted to replicate the dunking action. This impacted the results as rich tea was the best in the first condition, whereas hob nob took first place when dunking. Both tests proved digestive to be the worst so we will be keeping them away from our tea in the future!

Eggcellent Eggs

Last week, we began our new science topic on living things and began by making observations about eggs. We built on that this week by taking part in an investigation over time. Firstly, we placed the eggs in vinegar and saw it dissolve the shell. As the children knew all about the membrane underneath, they knew why the egg didn’t fall apart with the shell gone. We then explored osmosis. Our now shell-less egg was put into golden syrup. This caused the liquid inside the egg to leave through the permeable membrane, as the syrup has a greater concentration of molecules. We were then able to re-plump our now shriveled egg through osmosis again by putting it into water, which we coloured. The children were fascinated to see the changes and explore why this was happening, so it made it well worth it that our classroom has smelt of vinegar and eggs this past week! Many of the children wanted to run this investigation at home. Here is a link to show you how it is done: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p00b1xr5

Visitors

We were also lucky enough to have some visitors to talk about science. Fiona’s sister, Ellen, is studying osteopathy and so came to talk about bones and how she is using science in her daily life. Mrs Donatantonio also stopped by. With her job in vaccinations, her talk was particularly topical, and the children asked lots of questions about the cornoavirus.

Celebration Morning

It was lovely to see those who could join us this morning. We had a great time creating trees with paper without using any glue, clips or tape. There were some brilliant constructions.

Wishing you all a peaceful weekend

Spellings (week 2)

Spring 2 Week 2

Another busy week has flown by in Year 5. On Tuesday we visited the Houses of Parliament. Our tour began by taking the queen’s entrance and looking around the robing room, where Queen Victoria’s throne still sits. We were then able to make our way to the House of Lords. Once inside, we could see the ornate, gold decoration. It was a wonderful experience for the children and adults alike. After our tour had concluded, we took part in a workshop where we explored votes for women and how suffragettes brought about change. It was an absolute privilege to take Year 5 on this trip. Not only was their behaviour impeccable during the journey, tour and workshop, they proved themselves to be highly knowledgeable about parliament. A tour guide complimented Year 5 and said that she was very impressed with their questions and comments. Well done, Year 5, and thank you to our adult helpers. Many of our Year 5s then had to rush off from the station on our return that day to take part in a chess tournament. They represented us well and achieved silver and bronze. All in all, it was a very busy but successful day.

On Thursday it was World Book day. There were a fabulous assortment of bible characters and I enjoyed hearing about who the children had chosen to come as and why.

All through this week, some of Year 5 took part in bikeability. This was a fantastic experience for them to learn new skills and how to ride on the road safely. Thankfully the weather improved today as they had endured some downpours during their sessions throughout the week.

Next week is science week. I am looking forward to seeing Year 5 use their scientific skills to take part in a whole school investigation. During science today, they impressed me with their observation skills as we looked at eggs. See if they can tell you about the different parts of the egg and how and why we are able to tell if they have gone bad.

Have a peaceful weekend

Spellings week 1

Spring 2 Week 1

We have had a busy first week back. Along with the rest of the school, we have begun our writing topic on ‘The Tin Forest’.  There have been some lovely posters completed about tin in preparation for this; well done, Year 5. In English, we have read the text and considered the feelings of the main character and how they change over the story. We have also been creative and have been turning junk into a tin forest of our own.

On Wednesday, Year 5 attended mass at Our Lady and St Vincent to receive ashes. The children behaved reverently throughout. This marked the beginning of Lent and today the children placed their Lenten promise on the hall wall.

Spring 1 Week 6

During our final week of half term, we have been learning about Islam as a part of other faith week. On Wednesday, Year 5 learnt about the Qur’an and then on Thursday visited the Watford Mosque. The imam was very informative and the children showed exceptional respect.

Later on Thursday, it was disco time and Year 5 had a great time with glow sticks!

In maths, we have been focusing on formal methods of addition and subtraction. The children have thrived in this unit and have been completing cryptorhythms. I have been really impressed with their problem solving skills in the past week.

Today we worked hard to bring our art unit to an end. After weeks of learning about painting and colour, the children created Hockney inspired school landscapes.

Home learning:

This week, there is a whole school home learning. We would like children to learn about tin in preparation of our upcoming English unit based on The Tin Forest. Find out where it comes from and about its properties.
