Autumn 2 Week 2

It has been wonderful welcome the children back this week and hear about their half term breaks.
This week was UK Parliament Week. The children built on their learning from last year about the structure of Parliament to understand General Elections. We discussed the upcoming election and why it is happening. The children will be watching out for campaign leaflets that will be coming through our letter boxes soon to learn more about who wants to represent our constituency. We also spent some time using the resources sent from the Parliament Education Service to understand how a bill becomes a law.
This week was also ‘Other Faith Week’ and our focus was on Judaism. As it is the Year of the Word, we have been learning about the Torah. We discovered what it is and its connection to our own Bible. After learning about how sacred it is, we looked at ways the Jewish community express respect and show importance of the the ancient text.
In PE, we welcomed Harry back for more football training. This week the key skill was receiving.
Home learning this week is on mathletics and spag.com. Children are also expected to complete 5 tests on readtheory.org.
New spellings for this half term will be given out on Monday.
Have a wonderful weekend.

One World Week

This week, Year 5 learnt all about Brazil. Thank you for some wonderful home learning. There were a range of ideas such as statues, posters, fact files and PowerPoints. We began our week by learning abut the climate zones of the world and where Brazil was located. This enabled us to understand why the rain forest exists in this part of the world. We then moved onto understanding the rain forest biome. By identifying the features of each layer of the forest, we were able to understand the conditions and what sort of life would be supported there. Finally, we learnt about deforestation. We looked at the causes and the effects of this on both Brazil and the whole world. In particular, we learnt about erosion and water quality by  running an experiment on how rainfall affects soil with growth and without.

Today we wrote prayers for the Amazon Synod and its success.

Year 5 also enjoyed getting creative this week. We used collage techniques to make a fantastic Amazon display.

On Wednesday, we made the traditional Brazilian treat: Brigadeiros. On Thursday, we evaluated them and made recommendations for improvements. Many children are keen to try these at home and so the recipe can be found at the end of the blog.

Also on Wednesday, we celebrated our class mass on the theme of Laudato Si. Thank you to parents who attended and thank you to Fr Dominic who came to celebrate with us and teach us a song. The children behaved reverently and the singing was beautiful- well done, Year 5.

This first half term has rushed by and I have really enjoyed working with you all. It was wonderful to see so many of you at the celebration morning and the children thoroughly enjoyed winning the Amazon quiz. They also took great delight in naming any parents found cheating!

Wishing you a restful half term.

Autmn 1 Week 7

In English this week, we completed our biographies and have begun to edit them. I was really impressed by the quality of their writing. In maths, we have been looking at decimal numbers and understanding the link between fractions and decimals. In science, we have been thinking about the movement of the moon. Year 5 learnt about the different phases of the moon and know that we are currently seeing a waning moon. Each evening, see if you can spot it the sky as we move towards the new moon in the half term. We also looked at the movement of the earth and discussed why we have seasons.

Our history learning combined with our RE this week as we discovered how Christianity came to England during the time of the Anglo Saxons. We evaluated the evidence explained reasons for its increases and decreases.

Next week is One World Week. We will be studying Brazil, and in particular the amazon. Home learning is to complete a task based on Brazil. It can be a poster, piece of art or a fact file. I look forward to seeing what the children make.

Autumn 1 Week 6

We have continued our Joan Proctor learning this week and our biographies are beginning to take shape. On Tuesday, we visited London Zoo which gave us a real insight into Joan’s work to inform our writing. It was wonderful to see how she is still remembered there and to have the chance to visit the Komodo dragon enclosure. Whilst there, we took part in a workshop about the rainforest. This will support us in our upcoming geography learning about the Amazon.

The new climbing frame was opened today and Year 5 had a chance to explore it during Golden Time. They are looking forward to using it every Tuesday lunchtime.

This week, home learning has been set on spag.com and Mathletics. Children are also required to complete at least 5 tests on readtheory.org.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Autumn 1 Week 5

This week, Year 5 began our new text ‘Joan Procter, Dragon Doctor’, along with the rest of the school. Our final outcome will be to write an autobiography about her. This week for home learning, I have asked the children to research her life so that they have the information they need for writing next week. This should consist of notes about her early life and information about her roles at London Zoo and the Natural History Museum.

To understand Joan more, we took part in a reptile workshop today. I hope you enjoy the pictures! We had a great time.

have a great weekend

Summer 2 Week 7

This week Year 5 have been focusing on creating their CAM toys. They have been using technical vocabulary to discuss the different parts and the movements they  make. It was wonderful to see such great problem solving as they worked to overcome some manufacturing difficulties.

In RE we have been learning about the cardinal virtues. Year 5 created rile plays as to where we might see courage, prudence, restraint and justice in our everyday lives.

Well done to our musicians who performed for us on Tuesday. It is always a pleasure to hear the progress they are making and enjoy their talent.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Summer 2 Week 6

Sports Day

Well done to all of Year 5 for their great effort on sports day. They gave every event all they had and supported their classmates brilliantly. It was a great day and it was wonderful to see so many of you at the picnic. Thank you to Mr Lyons for going in goal and allowing Year 5 the chance to enjoy the football event even more. Home learning has finished for the year. Please could all CGP maths and Schofield and Simms English Skills books be returned to school.

Have a great weekend

Summer 2 Week 5

It has been a very busy week in Year 5! The main highlight had to be our Pilgrimage to Aylesford Priory. On arrival, we were given a tour by a Carmelite Friar where we saw beautiful chapels and peaceful surroundings. Fr Francis spoke about the history of the friary and pointed out a stone that had been blessed by St Paul VI. After our tour, we took part in mass. The children sang beautifully and were reverent throughout. It was then time for lunch where we could enjoy the beautiful weather. Our final activity of the day saw us thinking about our house saints as leaders, and how year 5 could use their example to lead the school in Year 6. The children behaved wonderfully and were commended by a member of the public who was visiting. Well done, Year 5. We would like to thank Michael for visiting us during the week to prepare for our visit and reflect on it after. We would also like to thank Fr Shaun for organising the pilgrimage.

This afternoon we were visited by science ambassadors from Dame Alice Owen’s school. We took part in practical investigations that taught us about what conditions in space are like and how we protect ourselves from UV rays.

Well done to our guitarists who performed for us this morning. It is always wonderful to hear the progress they are making.

There is no home learning this week. I hope to see you all at the strawberry fayre.

Forensic Science Day

Year 5 were given an important task this week. Along with the rest of the school, they had to investigate a crime that had taken place at Pope Paul school. As I was a suspect, I was relying on the children to clear my name! They were taught how to take fingerprints and how to classify them. Year 5 were also given a lesson in handwriting analysis as the thief had left a note behind. The children then learnt how to test ink to see if they could discover who was behind the crime. Thankfully they did a wonderful job as the proved my innocence. Thank you, Year 5!

Thank you for all of the donations for our orange class hamper so far. The last date to hand in items is Friday. There will be no home learning this week as I am away on a course from Wednesday-Friday. Have a wonderful weekend.

Summer 2 Week 3

In Year 5 this week, we have been learning about percentages in maths and looking at the illustrations of Shaun Tan in English. We also did some computing where we focused on reducing the number of commands to make an algorithm more efficient.

A real highlight of the week was our Trip to Nicholas Breakspear School. We were invited to be members of their school community for a day to give us an insight into what secondary school will be like. Year 5 demonstrated exemplary behaviour and threw themselves into each learning opportunity- I was really proud of them all. We are very grateful to everyone at Nicholas Breakspear for their warm welcome and it was wonderful to see some Pope Paul alumni.

Year 5 were reverent throughout the Blessed Sacrament procession today and sang beautifully. It was great to see so many parents joining us in this act of witness.

Last week, Year 5 were the proud recipients of the attendance dog with 100%. Unfortunately, this week we dropped to 97%. Hopefully we can gain the title back next week.
