Before you listen to this song, ‘Share the Light of Jesus’ think about how you can share Jesus’ light today in all that you say and do.
Finish your quiet time by saying the mission prayer:

We believe that we are all God’s work of Art.
We strive to respect and care for each other and to use our talents to do our best.

Wider Curriculum In our Geography Topic , we have looked at the features of Megacities. We looked at both human and physical geography of cities such as:

Tokyo, New York, Delhi, Mumbai, Karachi, Dhaka and Beijing.

Today, your task is to use Secondary Sources to research one of these megacities.

Create a report using non-fiction genre features such as bullet points, headings, subheadings, maps, keys, pictures, labels and captions.

Include information on the location of the city, the size and population of this city. . You may want to report on the most important buildings/sites/attractions in or near this city. Other ideas for you to research are finding details on physical geography (mountains, rivers, etc.,) weather, languages used, currency, main religion. and finding out about this city’s import and export goods.

Try and draw conclusions as to why would so many people choose to live in this particular city. What features are there to support mass living?

Use Computing tools if possible; a Popplet, a PowerPoint presentation, a Word document.

Wednesday, 7th October 2020

Dear Year 4,

We wish we could have met as usual this morning but until further notice myself and Mrs McNamara will use this platform to inform you about your daily learning. Please see the table below with activities for today.

If you have any questions to ask, please get in touch with us via our Year 4 email which is:

Today it is the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary.  When you have a moment, please pray a decade of the rosary….an Our Father, ten Hail Marys and a Glory Be. We have been learning about the rosary in class and your special assembly on Friday will teach others all about this important prayer.

Ms Varga and Mrs McNamara

Spelling Please use the link below to practice our previous weeks’ spellings:

http://spellingframe.co.uk

So far we have covered Weeks 1, 2, 3, 4 and this week, we focused on these words (with further prefixes):

irresponsible, irrelevant, intercity, interact, international, interrelated, anticlockwise, antiseptic, antisocial, autobiography
autograph
Maths This week, we have been consolidating our understanding of rounding three and four digit numbers to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000.

Please try out this rounding card game  to help you apply your learning. Don’t forget, you can use our rounding mountains to determine benchmark numbers (e.g.: the ten before/the ten after/midway through).

rounding_cards_game- 7.10.2020

You can create your own set of cards using rounding to the nearest 1000, as an extension.

English This week, we launched our writing focus using the River Story by Meredith Hooper as the stimulus.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LoMXESuY8ss

We have retold the stages the river goes through in the first person, from the river’s point of view and we have also come up with a list of emotion words that they can use as fronted adverbials.

E.g.:

Scared and lonely, I began my journey as a tiny droplet of melted snow high up in the mountains.

Today for your English learning,  click on the YouTube link to read the story again and create a vocabulary bank for yourself.

Jot down any verbs to substitute ‘flow’ and any description words. Be prepared to use these words in context, when we start writing our own narrative.

Remember, a verb is a doing word.

For example:

Verb: bubbling, dripping,…

Description: shining, small, fast, …

RE In RE we have been looking at the 3 Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation) as part of our RE learning.

We have looked at symbols, words and actions being used when celebrating these Sacraments.

We have discussed how these Sacraments are outward, visible signs of the invisible love and grace of God.

For your learning today, create an A4 piece of art around one of your chosen Sacraments: Baptism, Eucharist or Confirmation remembering the importance of the symbols you use to explain your chosen sacrament.

You can use any media: paint, crayon, pencil, etc…for this work.

For example: When we talk about the Eucharist, we think of the Bread and the Wine, the Body and Blood of Jesus. We also think about the Chalice and the Bread….you may wish to use these in your artwork.

Year 4 has had the busiest of weeks so far participating in daily Healthy Eating activities as part of their Science learning.

They have looked at the health benefits of wholegrains and calculated the fibre content of different food items. They tasted wholegrain alternatives and also guessed the ingredients of different fruit and vegetable smoothies. They carried out a food survey, where they learned that the most disliked vegetable in Year 4 is broccoli, whilst the most liked one is carrot. They infused water with lemon, cucumber and mint and also looked at mindfulness and mental wellbeing.

The children had the opportunity to try karate on Wednesday, which they thoroughly enjoyed.

For the children who are celebrating their First Holy Communion  this weekend, we wish them every blessing as they grow closer to Jesus through receiving this Sacrament.

As part of this celebration we are asking for all the children to bring in a photograph of them from their First Holy Communion for a class display.

Next week, it is Year 4’s assembly on the Rosary, and this will be posted on the blog. Please encourage your child to learn their words for this.

Wishing you a lovely weekend,

Ms Varga and Mrs McNamara

Friday, 25th September 2020

Although the nice weather has left us for now, Year 4 had another busy week and used the outdoors when possible.

In Maths, children consolidated their understanding of numbers by regrouping them flexibly and later looked at number magnitude, thinking about the relative size of 3 and 4 digit numbers.

In English, we have consolidated the use of conjunctions, both coordinating and subordinating, and moved on to description. We looked at video clips of rivers in different areas and used adjectives and adverbs to describe their surroundings.

In RE children took part in Acts of Worship and revisited their earlier learning on the Sacraments.

Children also created pieces of art using things they can find in nature as part of their well being activities.

We looked at soils and carried out some investigations about particle sizes and acidity/alkalinity in Science, whilst working on our overarm throw in PE.

Children also made cards to celebrate their First Holy Communions. I hope the weather holds up and families -even if in small numbers- can celebrate this special, blessed time.

Thank you for the boxes of tissues sent in, we appreciate the contribution.

Have a lovely weekend,

Ms Varga

Year 4 have had yet another very busy week.

Children built on their understanding of Place Value and started investigating 4 digit numbers in Maths using different models. They played a strategic game using a dice each to create numbers; a game they enjoyed very much!

In English we carried on looking at sentences, identifying nouns, verbs and descriptive phrases and also looked at ways of extending sentences by using conjunctions.

Children played skill based games in PE to further practice their chest push, whilst they looked at plants in Science and drew observational drawings.

Children took part in Acts of Worship and carried out Mental Health activities as well.

We used different media to create cards this week where children had opportunities to look at and try out different fonts, think about proportions and explore the use of water-colour paint.

The children are doing very well when it comes to following our hand-washing regime and they worked really hard all week to settle into class routines and to take pride in their presentation and learning. Well done!

Please look out for awards in the News Letter!
