Spring 1 Week 4

This week we read the story The Gingerbread Man. The children wrote new endings to the story. They made gingerbread men from different resources, they sequenced the story, they made a bridge for the gingerbread man to cross and labelled the characters. The highlight was making gingerbread men and eating them.

After we were scientists. We predicted what liquid would be the safest for The Gingerbread Man to swim in. Oil, water, juice or vinegar. We measured the liquid to make it a fair test and observed what happened. The only gingerbread to not dissolve was in the oil.

This week was Chinese New Year. Thank you to Yashu and Isabella’s mums for coming in, decorating our class, talking to the children about Chinese New Year and giving out lots of gifts.  We made snakes, dragons and wrote numbers 1 – 5 in Chinese. Happy New Year to Yashu and Isabella’s families.

In Maths, they represented 6, 7 and 8 in different ways and practise counting on from 5 to 6, 7, 8.

In Phonics, we learnt the digraphs ch, sh, th and the tricky word they. Please practise at home.

In Religion, we listened to the story Jesus Feeds the 5000. The children acted out the story, made baskets of bread and fish, drew pictures and wrote sentences.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Year 5 – 31/01/25

Spring 1 Week 4 is over and out, so here is what Year 5 have been up to:

In English, we focused on using relative clauses, exploring this important writing feature through our class novel, The Boy at the Back of the Class. The children are thoroughly enjoying the story, especially this week’s chapters featuring Brendan the Bully.

In Maths, we continued building our fractions knowledge. We worked on comparing and ordering fractions greater than one, adding and subtracting fractions with the same denominator, and adding fractions within one with different denominators.

In RE, we reflected on the parable of The Rich Man and Lazarus, discussing its relevance in today’s world. Later in the week, we explored the Transfiguration of Jesus and its significance for the disciples.

Connor and Emily also led us beautifully in our classroom Celebration of the Word this week, reflecting on last Sunday’s Gospel about Jesus declaring that ‘the Year of the Lord’s favour’ had begun.

During Science this afternoon, we conducted our investigation to answer the question: Which material is the best insulator of heat? The children applied their understanding of fair testing and were excited to see the results. Next week, we will be evaluating our findings to determine the most effective insulator and consider why certain materials performed better than others.

In PE, as part of our gymnastics unit, we focused on creating 1-, 2-, and 3-point balances, both individually and with partners. The children worked hard to refine their control, strength, and stability in each position.

Please may I request again that children only bring in fully sealed bottles for their drinks? This will help us reduce the number of spillages in the classroom. Thank you for your support.

Have a lovely weekend, and see you on Monday!

Spring 1 Week 4

In Science, the children planned and conducted their own investigations to find out how the temperature of water affect the time it takes for ice to melt.

They had to decide how to record their findings and then make sure that only one variable was changed. The experiments was repeated to ensure they were fair and accurate.

In English, the class have learnt about the structures of haiku and tanka poems. This then enabled them to write their own poetry.

In History, the children enjoyed learning about Boadicca and her army. Next lesson they will be finding out what changes the Romans made to how people live.

In Maths, the focus have been on different strategies for multiplying. Please use this example to help support your child with the activities sent home today.

Reminders:

  • Mrs Heymoz spoke to all of KS2 children this week and reminded them that they do not need to bring toys, figures or unnecessary stationary to school.  The children have gone through their class drawers and have put anything like this in their school bags so please help them by emptying them over the weekend.
  • Please ensure that home learning packs are sent in on Friday and that reading records are in their bags everyday.
  • Earrings must not be worn for swimming.

Year 1 Week Beginning 27th January 2025

In Maths this week, Year 1 have been busy learning about place value within 20. They have explored the differences and similarities between numbers 11 to 15 using manipulatives such as: ten frames, number pieces, towers of cubes, Rekenreks and bead strings, which have supported the children to see the full ten and part of the next ten to support their place value understanding. This understanding is crucial to future work on addition and subtraction. They also used part-whole models, giving them an informal introduction to partitioning.

In RE, the class learnt some more about the presentation of Jesus as a newborn baby, in the temple to Simeon and Anna, and later in the week, they learnt another story about Jesus as a young boy in the temple.

In English, the children began a new unit on the book, ‘The Storm Whale’ by Benji Davies. This is the story of a lonely little boy, a whale washed up on a beach and a friendship that changes both their lives forever. Year 1 have been making story predictions, identifying and collecting new vocabulary, and then using it in both their oracy and written learning. They have also been busy thinking about what they would do if they were on their own and found a washed-up whale on the beach.

In Geography, the children continued their new topic about weather, and in Art, they made observational drawings of shells using a continuous line.

During their computing lesson, they continued to explore digital media and created their own line and shape images, inspired by artists  and in PE, they continued their dance unit.

In Phonics, the children have been learning the following sounds:

  • -Y (in cry, my, try)
  • tch ( kitchen, fetch, stitch?
  • ve (ave, rave , hive, cove)

The Spelling Shed this week focuses on the split digraph, ‘o-e’.

Next week, we will be having our Year 1 assembly; please see the newsletter about the new format. A few children have one or two lines to read/say in the assembly and have brought them home tonight to practise over the weekend. Thank you for helping them with this! Please could they come back in with them on Monday?  Thank you!

We are looking for three parent helpers to accompany us to the Jain Temple on Monday 10th February, for the morning. If you would like to volunteer, please speak to Ms Pemberton directly. Names will be drawn out of a hat, if we have lots of interest. Thank you!

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend,

Ms Pemberton and the Year 1 team

Spring 1 Week 3

In English, we continued our writing based on the Michael Morpurgo story Coming home. We have focused on using alliteration and figurative language.

In Maths, we focused on dividing by 10 and 100, then moved on to finding related multiplication and division facts.

In Music, this term we are continuing our djembe drum lessons. This week we focused on the connection between tempo and pulse, performing at different tempos and understand the difference between long and short notes.

In RE, we have explored how our faith influences our actions. We have also written beautiful poems about God’s presence in the world.

Anna, Matilda and Ayrabella, led this weeks Collective Worship, helping us reflect on good news.

In Art, we have created still life collages.

Have a lovely weekend

Year 5 – 24/01/25

Today, we launched the worldwide Catholic Jubilee Year theme, Pilgrims of Hope. This special time calls us to deepen our faith, bring hope to others, and journey together towards God. Reflecting on how we can embrace hope in our daily lives and support one another as a community, we continue to live out our mission in this Year of Apostles.

Here’s sneak peak into the rest of Year 5’s week!

In English, we continued reading The Boy at the Back of the Class. We explored the meaning of “refugee,” discussed the prejudices refugees face, and predicted what the narrator might learn about Ahmet. Through role play, we practised respectful questioning to deepen our understanding of others’ experiences.

In Maths, we focused on converting improper fractions and mixed numbers, then moved on to comparing and ordering fractions.

In Science, we planned an investigation to answer: Which material is the best at insulating hot water? The children identified the independent, dependent and controlled variables, and discussed the importance of fair testing, ready for next week’s experiment.

In RE, we began our Galilee to Jerusalem unit, reflecting on the Beatitudes and how to live them out. We also explored the Parable of the Good Samaritan as an example of living the Great Commandment: Love your neighbour as yourself.

Dino, Emily and Sophia led us in a Celebration of the Word on Tuesday to help us reflect on the Wedding at Cana.

Please may I request that children only bring in fully-sealed water bottles; this will help us prevent the increasing number of spillages in the classroom. Thank you for your understanding.

Friday 24th January, 2025

Another week and what a busy week it has been!

In Maths we have finished our work on fractions, moving onto long multiplication and long division.

In English we have practised varying our sentence structure by starting with subordinate clauses.

In RE we are covering our new focus on Sacramental People.  Also this week, the Jubilee Year of Hope has been launched! Pope Francis has declared that the year 2025 will be a Holy Year of Jubilee for the Catholic Church – an event that takes place once every 25 years. The Year of Hope is a time to rekindle faith, share hope, and pray.

It was the girls chance to shine this week in sport – we had a Netball tournament on Thursday morning and unfortunately, due to the rain, the girl’s football match did not take place in the afternoon. The children played  well and with such friendly, generous and consideration towards their teammates.

We managed to get our for walk with Reception on Wednesday this week. Although it was muddy, the children had a great time. Year 6 brought great energy and were retelling the story We’re Going on a Bear Hunt as we walked along. We were impressed with how much of it they remembered!

Have a wonderful weekend,

Mrs McNamara and Mrs Lines

Spring 1 Week 3

Our focus this week was The Three Little Pigs. The children retold the story with puppets and by drawing a story map. They thought of ways they could trick the wolf. They made houses of straw, sticks and bricks. They made Wanted posters to find the wolf. To continue to develop their oracy skills, they used phones to call the police and tell them what had happened. The children predicted what objects could be blown away and tested them. Outside, the children dressed up as builders and built houses with bricks.

In Maths, the children have been comparing mass using the vocabulary heavier and lighter. We used balancing scales to demonstrate how we can measure mass. First the children estimated what they thought then measured the objects. Then they looked for objects that have the same mass and showed them balancing on the scales.

In Phonics, we learnt y, z, zz and qu. Our tricky words are he and she. Please complete the phonics sheets and practise the sounds and words at home.

In Religion, we learnt the Glory Be prayer.

Outside, we have a cafe role play where the children are encouraged to develop their speaking and listening skills. They are all using their writing and maths skills when writing orders and paying for items.

Please send writing books back on the children’s reading day.

Have a wonderful weekend.
