Year 6 – 04/02/22

On Wednesday, we celebrated Candlemas, an important feast day in our Church’s calendar when we remember the wonderful story of when Jesus was presented in the Temple of Jerusalem, 40 days after he was born, and an old man Simeon – who had been waiting for the coming of the Messiah all his life – proclaimed that Jesus would be a light for all to see. In Year 6, we reflected on what it means to be a light for others, then made these beautiful candle paintings, with their ideas about light around the edge.

This week’s home learning:

Maths Mathletics assignments on adding and subtracting fractions.
Platinum Jubilee Learning On Sunday, Her Majesty The Queen will become the first British Monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee, marking an amazing 70-year reign. To learn more about this, you are asked to carry out research to answer the following questions:

·         Who is our Queen?

·         What is the role of our Queen?

·         What is a Jubilee?

Be as creative as you like when presenting your research (make a poster, create a booklet, do some writing, make a film, write a song…) and have fun learning about this unprecedented moment in British history.

Year 6 – 28/01/22

This week has been Other Faith Week, and Year 6 – along with the rest of the school – has really enjoyed learning all about Hinduism. The highlight of the week was our trip yesterday to Bhaktivedanta Manor – the Hare Krishna Temple in Watford – which was donated by George Harrison to the Hare Krishna movement in the 1970s. It was a fascinating and action-packed day, including dressing up as some of the main gods, riding in a cart pulled by oxen, feeding the sacred cows, witnessing an aarti ceremony, trying on saris, having our faces painted, and enjoying a vegetarian curry feast. Thank you to Mrs Heymoz and Mrs Lennox for organising such an enjoyable day out.

Year 6 – 21/01/22

On Wednesday, as part of our RE topic about God being with us in the world today, we went searching for God in Darkes Lane. We found him in the memorial garden next to the station, in the buds of new life coming through on the trees, the lady in Sainsburys who smiled and waved at us, and in the cleaner who so diligently keeps our local space litter-free.

Next week is Other Faith Week, when the school will be learning about Hinduism. You will have received a letter earlier in the week about our trip to Bhaktivedanta Manor, where we will have the opportunity to experience a cart ride pulled by oxen, take part in a group role play, taste a freshly prepared hot vegetarian feast, see the shrine and arati ceremony, experience traditional face painting and dress up in traditional dress. It will be an amazing insight into the Hindu faith and the children will gain a lot from it.

We need 2 more adult helpers to accompany us for the day, so if you are available and willing to join us next Thursday, then please get in touch with me!

Year 6 – 14/01/22

This week has flown by in Year 6!

In Maths, we have been familiarising ourselves with the vocabulary multiple, factor, prime, square and product. The children learnt how to find common factors and common multiples, which has prepared them for beginning fraction learning next week.

In RE, the children wrote beautiful poems about where they see and notice God. These have formed our new classroom display. Have a read of what some of them wrote:

In History, we learnt about certain landmarks in Potters Bar that have relevance to the war, including the pillboxes in the golf course, and even a prisoner of war camp near Dancers Hill. It was fascinating to imagine our town playing its part in the war!

In Science, we began our new topic about Evolution. We looked at the timeline of the formation of the earth until now, which we then modelled on a toilet roll from the front of the school to the back. It was mind-blowing to see that on a 200-sheet toilet roll, humans have existed on the earth for only a fraction of the final sheet!

In Music, we explored rhythm, and played a game that involved using our body and a cup as percussion.

In Design and Technology, we began our project, which will result in making a fabric phone pouch. This week, we looked at the design process and wrote the design criteria for our product. There were some very interesting designs, and everyone’s very excited about it!

In PE, we began this half term’s gymnastics unit, in which we started today by learning and practising different balances.

Year 6 – 07/01/22 – Happy New Year!

Happy New Year and Happy Epiphany for yesterday! I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas. Here the children are in their crowns, and here is our Epiphany display.

Today, we had a Science Day where we investigated the question: How does the distance between an object and the light source affect the size of the shadow?

After careful planning, investigating and plotting results on a line graph, most groups concluded that the closer the object is to the light source, the larger its shadow will be.

Our PE days this term will be Wednesday and Friday, so please ensure that children come to school in their full PE kits on those days.

Year 6 – 17/12/21 – Merry Christmas!

It’s been an incredibly busy week, in which we’ve had lots of Christmas fun and creativity combined with lots of hard work writing too! See the photos below for a snapshot of the week. Well done Year 6 – you’ve had a fantastic first term, and you all deserve a well-earned rest with your families.

Thank you very much, parents, for your kind gifts; your generosity and support is hugely appreciated. I wish you all a wonderful Christmas, and I’ll see you in 2022!

Special request: Please could you save any Christmas cards depicting Mary and Jesus on the front, and bring them in after the holidays. Thank you.

Year 6 – 10/12/21

If we weren’t feeling festive before today, we definitely are now! This morning, we all had lots of fun decorating the classroom with paper chains and snowflakes, meeting Santa, and having a dance to Christmas music and cake this afternoon!

This afternoon, the choir went down to the church to sing to the Over-50s club members. A special well done goes to Jack and William G who both sang stunning solos.

Well done to the whole class for their fantastic participation in Wednesday night’s Advent Service. You read, sang, mimed and danced so brilliantly and I was so proud of you all.

Fairtrade Group

Last week, the Fairtrade Group wrote a letter to Organic Circuit – a new organic food shop on the High Street – to ask if they could donate a hamper of organic food for the FOPPS Christmas Raffle. This week, Mia delivered the letter to the shop, and they have very kindly donated hamper of food as well as a gift voucher to the FOPPS. Thank you, Organic Circuit, and also Mrs Pandeli for supporting the Fairtrade Group with this.

Year 6 – 03/12/21

On Monday, we placed the first flame on our Advent wreath, as the time for preparation for Christmas began! We have also spent the week in full swing practising for next Wednesday’s Advent Service. Please continue to practise the songs here, so that you know them off by heart.

In RE, we have looked at the different titles used by Luke in the Nativity story, and wrote acrostic poems to demonstrate the meaning of each title.

In Art, the children developed their tonal shading skills in the context of leaves:

Today, we had our first child-led Liturgy in class by Lily, Ellie, Fabian and Aidan, which they planned last week. They got us to think about what John the Baptist means when he tells us to ‘prepare the way for the Lord’. We will have another two groups leading their liturgies next week.

Year 6 – 26/11/21

Year 6 were lucky enough to welcome a scientist into the classroom this week to help us in our learning about refraction of light. Dr Alan from University College London showed us what happens when a prism refracts light; we were all amazed to see rainbows projected onto the ceiling and around the room! This helped us to understand that white light contains all the colours of the rainbow, but this spectrum is only visible when the light bends (refracts) through a transparent object such as a prism and the different wavelengths of each colour mean that the colours separate slightly. So it seemed very fitting that this morning when the rain came at break time, they were able to explain that the raindrops were acting as prisms and refracting the sunlight that was shining through them!

The children then tried this out for themselves by creating a rainbow discs which, when spun extremely quickly, merge to appear white!

Your home learning for this week is to learn the songs for the Advent Service and your own parts. You can find lyrics and YouTube links to songs here.

Have a great weekend!

Advent Service 2021 – songs to learn

Please find full lyrics to songs that we are singing in our Advent Service here . Use the videos below to practise them, trying your best to learn the words off by heart.

Wait for the Lord (Until 0:52)

Like a Candle Flame

Growing in Jesus (Until 1:20)

Think of a World Without any Flowers

The Angel Gabriel (Until 2:01)

Beauty for Brokenness (Until 2:32)

Blessed One

O bright Mother of Mercy

So pure and so brave

We honour your virtue

And dignity praise

Every angel salutes you,

The Earth calls you blessed.

We look to you Mother,

For mercy and rest

Ave! Ave! (x3)

Blessed one

God exalted you, daughter,

And called you in time

To offer your womb,

To bring forth the Divine

You were willing to serve

Though you knew not a man

You trusted in God

And said “Yes” to His plan

Ave! Ave! (x3)

Blessed one

Your consent to God’s Spirit

Was fruitful and free

Accepting God’s Son

In a great mystery

For the Lord, you remained ever

Virgin in faith

Delivered from doubt

And assisted by grace

Ave! Ave! (x3)

Blessed one

Now we hail you, O daughter

Of mercy and light

O pray we embrace peace

And good, love and right

You are splendid, enthroned

Above moon, star and Earth

O Queen of the Heavens

Your Son saved the world!

Ave! Ave! (x3)

Blessed one

My Soul Glorifies the Lord

Peace Child

We Are Waiting
