Year 6 – 01/04/22

Wishing you all very Happy Easter!

Our final week of term has seen the conclusion of our English unit, for which the children have written fantastic non-chronological reports about their invented magical creatures. The week has also contained discussion and writing about who was responsible for Jesus’ death; Pilate, God, Adam & Eve, Jesus himself, and us as sinners were popular conclusions for who is most culpable.

On Tuesday night, Year 6 – along with the rest of KS2 – led a beautiful reflection on the Stations of the Cross at the church. Their acting and singing brought so much reverence to the story of Jesus’ final day, and I was so proud of them all.

This morning, some of the Year 6s led us once more in the final assembly of the term about Maundy Thursday.

And they made lovely Easter cards:

Thank you and well done for your hard work this term. Over the break, your home learning is an Easter Garden, as detailed below, and the maths.co.uk tasks set (your login details are stuck to the PGL envelope I gave out this afternoon).

See you on the 19th April.

Love Miss D ✝️🐣🐰🌸🥚

This week has been Science Week, for which the theme has been ‘Growth’. We were lucky enough to have a crystal growing session with Mr Friedlander from Dame Alice Owen School yesterday afternoon, and are looking forward to seeing how much they grow over the weekend!

We celebrated St Patrick’s Day with a fantastic display from the school’s Irish dancers. A huge well done to Darcie-Louise and Lily for representing Year 6 and being a credit to the class.

This week, the Year 6 House Captains have been busy organising fundraising events, whilst the Fairtrade Group have been out and about in Potters Bar, spreading the word about the work of Fairtrade. They went to Sainsbury’s to buy Fairtrade goods, and then presented to Year 5 pupils at Cranborne school. They spoke fantastically, and the children at Cranborne seemed very impressed and inspired to look for the Fairtrade logo when shopping for groceries. Excellent job, Fairtrade Group!

Yesterday afternoon, we had the pleasure of watching Year 5 and Year 6 musicians, plus the school choir, perform a plethora of tuneful treats to us. Well done to all performers; you were fantastic!

Today, in preparation for Science Week next week, Year 6 had a science workshop all about air, in which the children took part in some amazing science demonstrations. Thank you to Mrs Carey for organising this.

*For a Science Week activity next Thursday, please could each child bring in a plastic bottle. Thank you*

Year 6 – 04/03/22

This Lent, the whole school is trying to answer the question: ‘How can we build a better world?’. To do this, we will look at a painting or an image each week to inspire us. This week, we have been discussing a painting called The Seven Acts of Mercy by Pieter Brueghel. I was blown away by the observations and inferences Year 6 were making from the image. Here are some of their comments:

“I think this painting represents humility and compassion.”

“The plaque above the door of the brick house looks like it is depicting a scene where Jesus is helping someone or feeding them. It’s as if all the people in the painting are living out the message shown in that plaque.”

“What struck me when looking at the painting was that so many of the people within it have smiles on their faces, whether they are helping others or whether they are the poor/homeless/sick/imprisoned who are being shown mercy.”

“I can see a village working together to bring happiness and help stop hunger. By lending one little hand you can make a big difference.”

On Wednesday, Year 6 had the privilege of taking part in a palm burning ceremony to generate the ashes that will be used in next week’s Ash Wednesday Masses within the parish. We reflected on the significance of the palms and ashes, and the words spoken when the ashes are placed on our foreheads.

This week has been Internet Safety Week, during which Year 6 have reflected on their internet usage and how they can ensure they are not opening themselves up to danger and putting themselves at risk when online, especially in the context of gaming and social media.

This morning, we took part in a workshop with OpenView Education, which really got us thinking about the personal information and data that is used and potentially shared by social media apps.

Wednesday was an exciting day for the House Captains, who went on a trip to Westminster to deliver the hats and scarves donated before Christmas to The Passage. Please see the school newsletter to read all about their day out.

We ended the week playing football in the sunshine before seeing our reading partners!

Have a wonderful half term everyone!

Year 6 – 04/02/22

On Wednesday, we celebrated Candlemas, an important feast day in our Church’s calendar when we remember the wonderful story of when Jesus was presented in the Temple of Jerusalem, 40 days after he was born, and an old man Simeon – who had been waiting for the coming of the Messiah all his life – proclaimed that Jesus would be a light for all to see. In Year 6, we reflected on what it means to be a light for others, then made these beautiful candle paintings, with their ideas about light around the edge.

Platinum Jubilee Learning On Sunday, Her Majesty The Queen will become the first British Monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee, marking an amazing 70-year reign. To learn more about this, you are asked to carry out research to answer the following questions:

·         Who is our Queen?

·         What is the role of our Queen?

·         What is a Jubilee?

Be as creative as you like when presenting your research (make a poster, create a booklet, do some writing, make a film, write a song…) and have fun learning about this unprecedented moment in British history.

This week has been Other Faith Week, and Year 6 – along with the rest of the school – has really enjoyed learning all about Hinduism. The highlight of the week was our trip yesterday to Bhaktivedanta Manor – the Hare Krishna Temple in Watford – which was donated by George Harrison to the Hare Krishna movement in the 1970s. It was a fascinating and action-packed day, including dressing up as some of the main gods, riding in a cart pulled by oxen, feeding the sacred cows, witnessing an aarti ceremony, trying on saris, having our faces painted, and enjoying a vegetarian curry feast. Thank you to Mrs Heymoz and Mrs Lennox for organising such an enjoyable day out.

On Wednesday, as part of our RE topic about God being with us in the world today, we went searching for God in Darkes Lane. We found him in the memorial garden next to the station, in the buds of new life coming through on the trees, the lady in Sainsburys who smiled and waved at us, and in the cleaner who so diligently keeps our local space litter-free.

Next week is Other Faith Week, when the school will be learning about Hinduism. You will have received a letter earlier in the week about our trip to Bhaktivedanta Manor, where we will have the opportunity to experience a cart ride pulled by oxen, take part in a group role play, taste a freshly prepared hot vegetarian feast, see the shrine and arati ceremony, experience traditional face painting and dress up in traditional dress. It will be an amazing insight into the Hindu faith and the children will gain a lot from it.

We need 2 more adult helpers to accompany us for the day, so if you are available and willing to join us next Thursday, then please get in touch with me!
