On Tuesday the class attended the school’s very special Welcome Mass. The children impressed everyone with their reverence and excellent behaviour and the staff were very proud of them.

As the class story focus has been ‘Stick Man’ by Julia Donaldson this week, Reception decided to go on their very own nature hunt around the school grounds to find materials to use in class. As well as sticks and leaves and other natural objects, they uncovered a fantastic mini-beast world under a large piece of wood on the field. The children were excited to find snail and slug eggs, huge worms, beetles, centipedes, snails, slugs and spiders. The children put the wood back where they found it, to encourage the insects to stay and allow them to look at them again.

Year 5 Autumn 1 Week 3

It has been another busy week in Year 5 and we certainly finished on a high. On Tuesday the children attended mass in school to celebrate the beginning of the school year. Alex gave us a fantastic visual representation of the trinity, which we will be studying more in depth later this half term.

Today the children performed exceptionally well to tell the school all about space and how it our responsibility to take care of the gift of creation. They spoke clearly and I was very proud of them all. Enjoy the pictures.

Our PE lesson – working as a team.

Another busy week has whizzed by!

This week, the children have been enjoying the daily activities to assist their spelling skills.  In Guided Reading we have spent time looking at how earthquakes have formed and learning more about them.  In English our work on poetry has continued and this week, we have started to look at narrative writing using our Tudor topic as a stimulus.  We have started to learn about some of the people who were around during the reign of King Edward VI with our focus on William Sharington. Ask your child to tell you about him and his involvement with the King.

In Maths, we have continued to learn about rounding numbers to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000.  The children have developed their understanding and have begun to apply rounding as a skill in contextual questions.

In Science, we have continued with the topic of Sound and in RE we have started to look at a sense of the presence of God in our lives.  The children chatted about what ‘Revelation’ means to them.  IMG_2303IMG_2302

Have a lovely weekend.

Week 3

What a busy week! It started with a letter from Mayor Trembull to say that a huge, ferocious bear had been seen near a cave on the beach. The children were asked to investigate this. They made their own cave explorer badges and they wrote a plan of what they would do if they saw the bear. The children made their own cave in the playground and kept checking the bear had not entered it. Then we went on a bear hunt and we found a bear in our cave! Luckily the bear is very good and he watches the children and tells me who has been working hard.

Year 6 14/09/18

It’s been a jam-packed first full week back at school for Year 6. On Monday, Alex, the priest-in-training, came to be interviewed by the children. It was very interesting to hear about his vocation, the difficulties he has in his training, and how his training in Rome is structured. Our main focus  for the week was our class assembly on the topic of Oscar Romero. The children completed learning on Romero meant when he said ‘Aspire not to have more but to be more’, they made their own Romero crosses, and then rounded it off with a beautiful assembly on Friday morning. Well done for leading the school so reverently and for spreading an important message.

Thursday was Roald Dahl Day, which was celebrated in Year 6 by continuing an unfinished Roald Dahl story in the style of Dahl. They followed this on in the afternoon by looking at what makes Quentin Blake’s illustrations so distinctive, and subsequently illustrating their story in this style.

This week’s home learning (due Tuesday 18th September) is as follows:

English spag.com:

·         Grammar – Y5 (A)

Spellings Revision of words from the Y3/Y4 Statutory Spelling word list – spelling sentences to be written in pink Home Learning book. See below for this week’s spellings. The children also have 2 envelopes – one containing this week’s words and one empty one. Once they feel they are secure with a word from Envelope 1 (short-term memory), they put it into Envelope 2 (long-term memory). I could test them on their long-term memory words at any time, and they will be revisiting them in class. If they misspell a word that they’ve put into Envelope 2, it goes back into Envelope 1.

Reception Week 2

What a busy week the children have had! There are definitely some very tired children and teachers this afternoon!

The children have continued getting to know their new learning environment and each other. We started the week off focussing on the story, ‘Owl Babies’ and related it to times in our lives when we have really missed members of our own families. The children have really enjoyed learning about owls and other nocturnal animals too.

The children also opened up their very own grocery shop this week. It is proving to be a very popular role play area and the shop keepers are struggling to keep up with the consumer demands!

The children also spent some time in the International Garden this week, reading books from the outdoor library. They then explored the field and had lots of fun rolling down the hill on the way back to class!

On Wednesday, the children participated in their first class Act of Worship. We were so impressed with the reverence and respect that they demonstrated.

On Thursday, the children participated in Roald Dahl Day by reading ‘The Enormous Crocodile’. They then made junk model crocodiles, drew pictures about the story and created crocodile puppets.

Wishing you all a wonderful, restful weekend,

The Reception Team.

Year 2 Blog Week 1

It has been a busy first week of learning in Year 2. In Maths we have been looking at number and place value. The children used different resources to help them recognise the value of each digit in 2 and 3 digit numbers. There were plenty of resourceful beavers in Year 2 this week. IMG_2495

The Year 2 Author of the Month is the very talented Roald Dahl. So far we have enjoyed the wonderful Esio Trot and marvelled at the tales of The Giraffe, the Pelly and Me. We have now moved onto FANTASTIC Mr Fox. In English we have been learning about different poems. To celebrate Roald Dahl Day we looked at the poem, The Crocodile and the children created some magnificent Crocky-Wock headbands to wear while performing the poem.

Week Two

We have had a very productive and fun time in Year 3 this week. Our class book is George’s Marvellous Medicine and on Thursday we took part in lots of fun activities, based on this book, to celebrate Roald Dahl day. What a wicked Grandma George has!

IMG_2187

In English we have written informal letters based on the book The Day The Crayons Quit. We will be editing and performing them in class next week. The children have been very creative with their ideas – well done everyone.

We have continued to develop our understanding of place value in maths and have completed tricky missing number puzzles. Mathletic home learning tasks are based on this topic.

IMG_0778

Our RE topic, ‘Beginning with God’, has lead us to explore what The Sign Of The Cross means and how our faith influences our actions and words. Next week we are going to be studying the story of The Burning Bush.

The class have also been learning about where sedimentary rock can be found in the UK and how it is formed – they have used their map skills to locate these places in the atlas. It has been great to see their own rock collections and hear how enthusiastic they are about this topic.

IMG_0790 IMG_0789 IMG_0791

We have also looked at Stone Age tools and objects, which inspired us to make clay thumb pots and necklaces.

IMG_0782 IMG_0783 IMG_0786

During Thursdays PE lesson we prastised our dodging skills, while learning a new invasion game and today Mr Dugan led us through lots of different team building activities.

IMG_0788 IMG_0795 IMG_0796 IMG_0804 IMG_0801 IMG_0799 IMG_0806

The children have been given a home learning pack today, with activities and information about passwords, reading days and tasks inside. If you have any questions please speak to me on Monday. If you were unable to attend the meeting on Tuesday please don’t worry, all the information will be added to our class page on the website.

Have a lovely weekend,

Miss Pringle

Autumn 1 Week 2- Year 5

We began our first full week with a visit from Alex, a seminarian staying at OLSV for the month of September. Year 5 became quite the investigative reporters as they asked a range of interesting questions to understand how his beliefs have shaped his life. It was really interesting to find out more about what it takes to become a priest and we were all surprised by the amount of languages that had to be learnt.

IMG_0151 IMG_0152 IMG_0153

On Tuesday, we had our first P.E lesson of the year. We will be focusing on team building and problem solving this half term. The children worked together to strategise and made great improvements in their communication skills.

On Thursday, Kaz returned for a drumming session. We will continue with these lessons for the next half term and build on the skills they learnt in year 4. The class had a lot of fun and showed off some impressive rhythms.

Thursday was also Roald Dahl Day. We celebrated this by taking part in a hunt that required knowledge of his books and place value knowledge.

IMG_0195 IMG_0196 IMG_0194 IMG_0193 IMG_0192 IMG_0191 IMG_0190 IMG_0189 IMG_0188 IMG_0186 IMG_0180 IMG_0181 IMG_0182 IMG_0183 IMG_0184 IMG_0179 IMG_0178

Year 5 also celebrated this day by creating some beautiful free verse poetry inspired by ‘The Witching Hour’, the title of the first chapter in the BFG.

Today I sent home the home learning. If there are any difficulties, I am available to help the children during Monday lunchtime.

For any who missed the ‘Meet the Teacher’ session. Please find links to the handouts and PowerPoint below.

Have a fantastic weekend
