Week 20
/in Reception /by Margaret JoyceThe new half term started with a focus on Lent and a chance to come together as a school for a whole school Act of Worship. The children put lots of thought into their Lenten promises and placed them on our very special Lenten tree.
As part of our new topic ‘Growing’, Reception are looking at different life cycles. On Monday, we took delivery of some chick eggs. It has been so exciting watching them hatch and grow. We have them until next Friday; if any younger siblings want to come and meet them, please just ask at the end of the day and you will be very welcome.
In Maths, we have been very busy learning about the concept of one more than/ one less than. This is actually a very tricky concept for Reception age children, but a very important thing to grasp if they are to understand addition and subtraction!
Our book focus this week has been The Ugly Duckling. We have had some fantastic discussions about bullying and differences. The children have written messages to the mean ducks, as if they were the poor ugly duckling character, they have made swan pictures and bird feeders and used a variety of materials to make their own nests!
Have a wonderful weekend,
The Reception Team
19.2.18 – 23.2.18
/in Year 3 /by Margaret JoyceWe have had a very busy start to the term. In maths we have continued to learn about fractions and have been applying our multiplication knowledge to find fractions of amounts. Saracens rugby club have also visited us this week, teaching us the basics of rugby and linking it to maths, which was great fun.
In science we have been learning about and investigating magnetism. Maybe this weekend you could investigate what items in your house are magnetic.
We have finished our big write in English and look forward to sharing them with you at parents evening. The children have also been given a pen pal from St Christopher international school in Penang, Malaysia! They have drafted their first letters and I will send them on Monday. We are all very excited about receiving our letters.
In RE the children have been preparing for Lent by making their Lenten promises and reflecting on how we can help others. We have also spoken about reconciliation in class too as many of the class are taking this next step towards their Holy Communion this weekend.
Enjoy your weekend and don’t forget your P.E. kits on Monday please.

February 23rd
/in Year 4 /by Margaret JoyceThis week in Year 4 we have begun our English writing using ‘The Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe’ by CS Lewis. The children have engaged really well with this book and we look forward to the wonderful writing to come.
In RE we took our Lenten Promises and put them on our beautiful Lenten Tree which was made by Mrs Burgess who has been assisting us with our Willow Sculptures.
In Maths, we have continued with our work on decimals and started work on money doing addition and subtraction.
In PE the children enjoyed a gymnastics lesson using sequences and floor work with a partner. On Wednesday, dressed in their comfortable tracksuits and trainers, they enjoyed the first of their Saracens sessions with the focus being Maths and Rugby.
In Guided Reading we looked at the history behind Shrove Tuesday and also how various countries around the world celebrate it.

Year 2 Blog Week 20
/in Archives, Year 2 /by Margaret JoyceLent is a time when we pray, give up treats and do kind things for other people, as we prepare to celebrate the great feast of Easter. Year 2 thought very carefully about their Lenten promises and created a beautiful display for our Sacred space in the classroom.
On Tuesday, we came together for a whole school Act of Worship for Lent and placed our Lenten promises on a special Lenten Tree. This Lent we are supporting CAFOD and the amazing work they do helping families around the world living in poverty, especially those who do not have the basic things they need like enough food or clean water.
This week, Year 2 had their first rugby session with Saracens Rugby. It was an amazing session. The children perfected their throwing and catching skills… especially the ‘W’ grip and ‘Superman Hands’.
The KS1 SATs information powerpoint can be found in the menu on the Year 2 page: KS1 SATs.
Week 21 Blog
/in Year 1 /by Margaret JoyceThis week, the children placed their Lenten promises on a leaf and hung them on a willow tree in a special assembly held on Tuesday.
They designed and drew posters for the Year 1 cake sale and displayed these around the school. On Friday, they were very excited and all helped to set up the hall. A big thank you to everyone for your kind donations and to the Year 1 parents and children for helping on the day!
Year 6 – 23/02/18
/in Year 6 /by Margaret JoyceIt has been a busy first week back doing SATs papers, but Year 6 have managed to get out of the classroom multiple times this week.
In Science, the children carried on their learning about Charles Darwin by imitating his research into bugs and their habitats. We went outside and looked closely at the insects we could find.
In PE, the children worked together to complete problem solving and team building challenges.
On Friday afternoon, we had the opportunity to see and hold the newly-hatched chicks in Reception!
Y6 also had their Lenten class mass at the church this week. They led the mass beautifully and with so much reverence, for which they received compliments from parishioners.
In recognition of the importance of prayer during Lent, the children designed their own acts of worship. On Thursday afternoon, Jess, Ellie and Meghan led us in a very reflective act of worship on the theme of forgiveness, and on Friday afternoon, Harvey, Anya and Grace brought the week to a close by allowing us to think about the things in our lives we are thankful for. I look forward to seeing the rest next week.

Enjoy your weekend and see you all on Monday.

Year 5 23/2/18
/in Year 5 /by Margaret JoyceWe began our first week back with some art based on our History unit on the Vikings. The children created fantastic longboats using collage, paint, chalks, pastels and pens. The results are fantastic; they really brighten up our classroom.
On Tuesday, we completed our football training with a tournament. I have been really impressed with the children’s attitude and the qualities they have demonstrated.
On Thursday, Year 5 were excited to meet the chicks that hatched in Reception. The children headed downstairs to make notes on their observations. It was amazing for them to see this part of a chicken’s lifecycle up close and apply it to our science learning.
This week, we have read the ending our class text from last half term. It was interesting to see how the author brought the events to a close and make comparisons to our own writing. We have also begun our next unit based on the epic story of Odysseus by analysing illustrations to make predictions
In R.E, we have been thinking about lent and understanding what the Gospel teaches us about Almsgiving, Prayer and Fasting. We took part in a school act of worship, where we placed our Lenten promises on our Lent tree. We have also been preparing for our Lenten mass at OLSV on Wednesday 28th February.
Have a great weekend,
Mrs Lines
