Dear Year 4,
Using your creative writing skills, why not have a go at writing your own story and submitting it?
BBC 500 words 2018
Chris Evans’ short story-writing competition for kids, in association with Oxford University Press.

Seven years ago, Chris Evans had a dream: to get children excited about reading and writing. All children, no matter what their ability. 500 Words is now one of the most successful story-writing competitions for kids in the world: Three quarters of a million children have written a story for the competition over the years!
It’s very simple. Entrants write an original story on any subject or theme in 500 Words or fewer and submit it online. If they win, their story will be read live on the radio by a superstar celebrity…like Julie Walters, Tom Hiddleston, Sir Kenneth Branagh, Jeremy Irons, or Sherlock himself – Benedict Cumberbatch. Each year, 10 million Radio 2 listeners hear, read and love these stories.
Time really flies when you’re having fun and working hard. Year 2 completed their their maths learning on statistics this week. The children interpreted and constructed simple pictograms, tally charts and block diagrams. They applied this learning to find out what we should grow in our vegetable patches next term. The results are in and the winner is …. Rainbow Chard. Year 2 can’t wait to grow this colourful vegetable.
In English we have been looking at poetry and the children really enjoyed learning ‘The Owl and the Pussycat.’ Year 2 performed this poem for Reception and Year 3 and everyone was very impressed. This week, for Other Faiths week, we visited St. Giles church. The churchwarden, William Masterson, gave a wonderful talk about the history of the church and answered all of our questions. It was very interesting to see the similarities and differences between St. Giles Church and Our Lady and St. Vincent church. Year 2 showed great respect and represented our school beautifully.
The focus of this year’s Other Faiths Week has been Judaism, as it is in keeping with our whole-school RE topic on the Exodus story and Passover. To learn more about the faith, we visited the New North London Synagogue in Finchley. We were welcomed by a female rabbi who explained the significance of various objects and symbols within the synagogue, and we even got the chance to see the Torah up close. Some of our favourite facts that we learnt from the trip are:
The children were asking fantastic questions and the woman was so impressed with their behaviour and attention during the visit. Well done Year 6!
In our science topic on Evolution, we have begun looking at the influence of Charles Darwin. This week, we focused on his love for nature as a child, when he would go on country walks, to observe the leaves and bugs he found there. The class re-enacted this by taking leaf samples and making observations of them.
Tuesday was Safer Internet Day and in Year 6, we considered how we are influenced by the social media, and the positive and negative effects of what we post online. Each child then decided something positive they could do online to make the internet a happier place.

Have a lovely break!
Miss Donatantonio
What a busy week! On Tuesday we participated in ‘Safer Internet Day’ with the rest of the school. The children thought about ways that they can be kind to others, both offline and online. They listened to a story called ‘The Three Monsters’, where the monsters were sad because someone had said very unkind things about their picture online. They also learnt about different emojis and how they can be used in a positive way. The class then shared their own pictures with each other and had others comment on them, by saying something positive.
To celebrate ‘Other Faiths Week’, Reception visited St John’s Methodist Church on Thursday. There we met the church warden Peter, who showed us around and taught us about different parts of his faith.
Today, Reception finally performed their class assembly to their families and to the rest of the school. It was all about the theme ‘Love’ and the story of St Valentine. We were all very proud of their fantastic performance!
Well done children!
Wishing you all a very happy and safe break,
The Reception Team
Our final week of term was incredibly busy and I think we are all ready for a well-earned rest!
For ‘other faith week’ Year 1, visited St Giles church in South Mymms. We were greeted by the churchwarden, William Marsterson who shared his knowledge about the history of the church. The children displayed reverence throughout the talk and asked some interesting question. After, they enjoyed exploring the church observing all its architectural features and monuments. They were able to discuss similarities and differences between St Giles church and Our Lady and St Vincent church. A huge thank you to our parent helpers for accompanying us on the day!
Have a wonderful half-break!
We have had a great time in Y3 today, learning about how to make the internet a safe and nicer place. As a class we discussed what we should do if we experience anything unpleasant online and how we can prevent these things from happening. We each made a pledge to help make the internet a nicer place and have been learning an e-safety song which we will upload on Friday.
Here are the lyrics to our song – it is to be sung to the tune of One Directions, You don’t know your beautiful – I have included the backing track that we used underneath the lyrics (This link was checked on 6.2.18 but please check it before allowing children to play it as it is a backing track on YouTube).
You’re on the phone, when you’re at home, but you should know that you’re never alone.
Playing Xbox or on PlayStation, just remember we all deserve the same respect,
Everyone in the whole world can see you; everyone else knows your details.
Don’t share your email, your picture or your address.
Don’t share your password, your schools name or your number.
Don’t meet or message with people that you don’t know.
You should know, oh, oh, you should keep your details safe.
If you feel worried then tell someone,
Maybe your parent, your teacher or your best friend
You can report them, remove it or even block!
You should know, oh, oh, you should keep your details safe, oh, oh, you should keep your details safe.
When you’re online, playing Mine-craft, just remember to always to be smart.
Keep comments kind, or send a ‘like’, just remember to always think twice.
Everyone in the whole world can see you; everyone else sees your comments.
Today the children enjoyed learning all about how to stay safe when using the internet. They looked at an informative powerpoint with the character, Smartie the penguin and then wrote about how to keep safe in a speech bubble. Lastly, they thought about how they could stay positive when using the internet, using kind words and sending kind messages to their friends.
Today is Safer Internet Day! This is a time for all of us to think about what we love about the internet, all the wonderful opportunities it provides for us and what we can do to keep ourselves safe when using it. Year 2 looked at the story of The Three Little Monsters and thought about all the ways that we can be kind to others both offline and online. We discussed the importance of telling an adult straight away if someone is unkind.
This Safer Internet Day, everyone is being encouraged to play their part in building a better internet. What can you do to be kind and positive online? Year 2 had a great time creating their jigsaw pieces of the puzzle.
