Safer Internet Day Tuesday 6th February, 2018

As part of showing our support for a positive Internet, we took part in activities in school to explore our ideas of what a better Internet might look like and we urge all of our parents, friends and supporters to create, connect and share positive messages and use of technology.

Together we can make a positive difference

Together we realise that we can make #SID2018 the biggest campaign yet and make a real difference to the digital lives of children right across the UK.

In school after our whole school assembly, we watched the SID TV video for 7-11 year olds and discussed the themes mentioned in the film about friendship and how online actions make us feel.

On a jigsaw template, we filled in a pledge to do something positive online. It could be a picture of the kind things the children would do online or a pledge to take a positive action to make the internet a better place. The jigsaws show how our actions fit in with the actions of those around us, to create a better internet.

Reception- Week 18

This week in Reception, we continued to focus our learning around the book, ‘The Three Little Pigs’.

The children had fun attempting to make a tower with a specified amount of bricks, and then finding a way to knock the tower over without touching it!

We had some children huffing and puffing and blowing their tower over, some children who rolled objects at their tower and some who fanned their tower with large pieces of cardboard!

All very creative and clever methods!

In Phonics we have finished Set 2 sounds and are working hard to learn, consolidate and apply these new sounds to our own reading and writing in class.

We are looking forward to visiting St Johns Church in Baker Street on Thursday, as part of ‘Other Faiths’ week. We are in need of three other adults to accompany us down there. If you are able to help us, please see Mrs Theo, thank you.

Enjoy your weekend,

The Reception Team

Week 5: 2nd February

This week, the children have been editing their narrative writing and have been fabulous editors in ensuring that they have looked at their sentences to see how they can improve them further.  Well done to each of them in working so hard to apply such an important skill.

On Tuesday, the class went over to  Dame Alice Owen’s school to take part in the local Speed Stacking Tournament. They were proud to represent the school and have been practicing hard in the lead up to the big day. Overall they came second.  Well done Year 4 – great work!

IMG_0698 IMG_0697 IMG_0696 IMG_0695In ICT the children have been looking at writing instructions using simple algorithms.  To assist them with this, they used the virtual bee bots on the Ipad.

In Maths the children have continued with their work on decimals and converting minutes to hours and hours to minutes.

This afternoon the children continued with their wonderful environmental art structures using willow.

Luca and Evie were particularly proud of their twists and weaving techniques using the willow.

As part of Other Faith Week, we will be having a class trip with Year 3 to the synagogue on Monday morning.  Thank you to the parents who are able to assist us with this visit.

Have a lovely weekend.

Homework for this week:

  1.  Spellings adding the suffix ‘ly’
  2. Unit 6 from the English Skills Book
  3. Mathletics – log on to see the activities uploaded (activities on decimals and measurement)
  4. Learn timestables (especially 6 times tables)

2.2.18 Year 3

This week we have been exploring forces in science. The children have enjoyed finding out about gravity and what it would be like without this force. They have also learnt how forces are measured and the effects of a force.

IMG_0293 IMG_0303IMG_0307 IMG_0306

In English we have been using similes, 2ed sentences, adverbs and adjectives to create some very atmospheric stories. We are going to be finishing these stories next week and incorporating some of our writing into our wonderful ink marbling.

During maths we have been applying our multiplication and division knowledge to tackle some tricky word problems and maths fluency – well done Y3, your timetable knowledge is impressive.

Year 5- 2/2/2018

This week, our focus in football was teamwork and strategy.

IMG_0790 IMG_0792 IMG_0791

This week, we were also visited by the NSPCC. They spoke to the class about different types of abuse and discussed who to speak to if they are ever worried about anything. The children were incredibly mature and listened beautifully.

On Thursday, we visited Pizza Express and the children each made their own Pizza. They enjoyed a tour of the kitchen and freezer and were excited to take their Pizzas back to school for lunch. It took a lot of self control for them to not open them up on the coach journey back! They smelt amazing! Once back at school, we discussed if Pizzas were healthy. A lot of good points were made for both sides.

In English, the situation has become very desperate for the main character in our book. The children have now planned the next chapter of the story, filled with more tension and ending in suspense. They will bring these plans to life next week and I look forward to reading them.

In maths, we have continued to solve problems, this time focussing on the strategy of working backwards.

In science, we have begun learning about the life cycles of mammals. The children have created life cycle wheels about a certain type of mammal and next week they will share their knowledge with each other.

In R.E we have continued to learn about Passover, focusing on what beliefs the story teaches us. It was wonderful to hear the children felt it taught them about having trust in God. I also enjoyed reading about when they have used this belief in their everyday lives.

Have a great weekend

Home Learning:

Maths- Mathletics

English- Inspired by our trip to Pizza Express and our discussions about it at school, I have asked the children to write a recipe for a Pizza. I have given the children the list of SPAG elements I would like them to include. Our spellings remain the same this week and the children will be tested on Tuesday.

Year 6 – 01/01/18

In maths this week, the children looked at the properties of 3-D shapes and learnt about shape nets.

IMG_0002 IMG_0003 IMG_0004 IMG_0006

In English, the class wrote their own non-chronological reports on a mythical creature that they had designed. They wrote in the style of The Spiderwick Field Guide to the Fantastical World Around You and I must say, these children have wild imaginations! They accompanied their writing with annotated drawings of their creatures, so these will be compiled into our very own Year 6’s Field Guide to the Fantastical World Around You in due course!

On a similar theme, this week’s science has seen the children learning about animal adaptations. The Portuguese man o’ war and the hagfish were particular favourites! They then designed their own animal to live in a given habitat, and again they showed what vivid imaginations they have!

We jumped back to the 1920s for this week’s PE lesson, in which we learnt the basics of dancing the Charleston. There was some great footwork going on!

Next week is Other Faith Week, during which time we will be furthering this term’s learning on the Jewish festival of Passover. Along with Year 5, we will get the chance to hear about it firsthand when we visit the synagogue on on Wednesday.

Click here for this week’s home learning letter.

Have a nice weekend.

Year 2 Blog Week 18

It has been another week of fun and leaning in Year 2! The children used their artistic talents to create some beautiful paintings of The Parting of the Red Sea. We used one point perspective drawing to show the Israelites making their way to freedom.

Year 2 thoroughly enjoyed putting on their wellies and gardening gloves and going out to prepare the vegetable patches. The children worked hard turning the soil, weeding the beds and planing some bulbs. We are casting our votes to find out what we will grow this year. Rainbow chard? Beetroot? Brussels Sprouts? Results in next week.

Week 19 Blog

This week the children have been learning about the story, The last noo-noo by Jill Murphy. They identified the events in the story and enjoyed interviewing characters from the book. In maths, they engaged with understanding the concept of  tens and ones, using dienes and speaking frames. In science, they created a human pictogram to see what is the most popular hair colour in the class. Then, they completed a whole class, eye pictogram.  On Friday, we had a special Candlemas assembly. Well done to the children that took part in this beautiful assembly and were awarded certificates.
