Autumn 1 Week 5

We have been busy preparing for Advent this week by keeping our Advent promises, receiving Advent angles and making Advent wreaths.

In Maths we have learnt to find fact families – this can be practised at https://www.topmarks.co.uk/number-facts/number-fact-families and have started to use the column method for addition.

On Thursday, something very unusual happened in Y3, our chairs sent us a letter to say they had quit! In order get them to return we had to write persuasive letters.

We have played matches in Hockey and learnt to count to 10 in Japanese, while performing sequences in Karate.

Autumn 2 Week 4

This week we read The day the Crayons quit by Drew Daywalt and explored the different emotions of each character using freeze frames. We have also made predictions about what some of the Crayons might enjoy if they were to quit and created some colourful crayon art. Next week,  we are going to look at persuasive language and begin writing our own persuasive letters.

In maths we have used different mental strategies for addition and subtraction. Next week we will be exploring fact families and inverse for example:

15 + 15 = 30  and 30 -15 = 15

100 +3 = 103 and 103 – 3 = 100

In science we have investigated the function of our muscles; creating models and labelling the muscles and predicting and identifying which muscles we use when running.

We have begun our Advent preparation by creating Advent angels and promises. Each day through Advent we shall be sharing our promises and reading an Advent prayer together. Look out for your child’s Advent angel on the window in the playground.

Advent

Whole School Home Learning Advent 2020 Friday 27th November 2020 – see the Newsletter for examples.

Advent  is the period leading up to Christmas. It starts on the Sunday nearest to 30 November which this year is Sunday 29th November and ends on Christmas Eve. The word ‘advent‘ comes from the Latin word ‘adventus’ meaning ‘coming’ which is a translation of the Greek word ‘parousia’. It is a time of waiting and preparation rather than a joyful celebration like Christmas.

Advent reminds us to remember and prepare for the birth of Jesus.

To help us prepare for Christ’s coming during Advent we invite you to take part in a creative home learning opportunity.

  1. Make an Advent wreath

One of our Advent traditions is to pray around an Advent Wreath.

Create an Advent Wreath or Advent Candles from card and paper and display in your home as an Advent focus. Here are some ideas for making a craft display.

  1. Write an Advent prayer to say with your family every day of Advent. Here are some examples to help you.

Blessed are you, O Lord our God, king of the universe.

You sent your Son to be the Light of the world and to spread his light of love to all.

As we light the candles of this wreath

May its growing brightness remind us of the approaching nearness of your Son

So that the day of His coming may find us prepared and filled with joy.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Amen

Taking part in these activities will help us to prepare and focus for the birth of Jesus at Christmas.

Autumn 2 Week 3

This week we have finished our dragon writing, using alliteration, similes and noun phrases. They are wonderful! We have also painted our dragon eyes, which are very impressive too.

In Maths we have been adding 0ne and two digit numbers to three digit numbers, while in RE we have learnt to find Bible references and understand why we pray the Hail Mary and what it means.

We have developed our punching technique in Karate and block tackling in hockey. In science we have explored the functions of our skeleton, identified some major bones, looked at x-rays and learnt about different animal skeletons.

Autumn 2 Week 1

Year 3 have been busy designing their own dragons this week, which they will be writing about next week. There are some very imaginative and magical ideas developing, which I am very excited about!

In maths the children have learnt to round to the nearest 10 and 100. This rhyme has really helped the class remember the rules of rounding.

We have prayed for those who have died in our prayer reflection books and learnt about remembrance day – please watch our PowerPoint below and enjoy our art work.

It has been a very active week – starting with karate, where we learnt the correct kicking technique and how to relax and stretch our bodies in different ways. Later in the week, we played hockey. Our focus this week has been possession and passing – we are a very talented class!

Week 8

Year 3 have been learning about India  for One World Week 2020. We used google maps and atlases to locate India, its surrounding countries, major cities, mountain ranges and major rivers. We’ve learnt to read toe figure grid references and investigated the different ways that the river Ganges is used. Most of the children decided they would like to live in the tropical climate zone of India so that they could see they wonderful wildlife found there. We enjoyed trying onion bhajis and comparing the UK to India.

Thank you for your very generous Harvest Festival donations.

The children had lots of fun this afternoon creating their own relay races, obstacle course and invasion games – I was very impressed with their teamwork and ball skills.

No home learning has been set but please ensure the children read daily and record this reading in their records.

Have a restful and safe half term,

Miss Pringle

Week 7

In maths this week, we have been estimating, comparing and measuring length. The children have been carefully using their rulers to measure accurately and select appropriate units of length. In English, Year 3 have been editing, publishing and assessing WWW What Working Well in their narratives.  You will be able to listen to them reading their wonderful stories – See below.

In PE, we have focused on ball carrying and passing in Tag Rugby. Next week we are going to use all of our new skills to play small sided possession games.

Week 6

We’ve had an action packed week in Y3! During RE we have looked at the symbols and actions used during Mass, while in Maths we have been estimating where to place numbers on number lines. Next week we will be looking at units of measurement.

We have used various painting techniques to create beautiful mountain and river paintings. I have been very impressed with the control the children have shown when painting. I am also really pleased with the story writing in Y3 this week – they have included prepositions, adjectives, noun phrases and verbs to interest the readers attention – well done Y3.

Week 5

This week is Healthy Eating Week and as part of our science learning we have investigated the importance of staying hydrated and tasted water infused with cucumber or lemon to encourage us to drink more – lemon was the most popular choice in Y3. We enjoyed moving and being active together this week, running, dancing, beat the teacher PE challenges  and karate and had lots of fun creating bar graphs that show which fruit and vegetables we have eaten each day. Now we understand that we should try to ‘eat a rainbow’ in order to stay healthy. We also celebrated kindness in the class and enjoyed some delicious banana bread made with whole grain flour.

In maths this week, we have been ordering and comparing numbers, while during fluency we have been balancing equations:

> means greater than.   56 > 45

< means less than. 45 < 56

= means the same as or equal to 4 + 2 = 5 + 1. This is also a balanced equation.

In English, we have written very exciting descriptive paragraphs about the character Stickman falling into a river! We have worked hard to include prepositions and interesting verbs to catch the readers attention. We will continue these stories next week.

Please look out for awards in the Newsletter!
