This morning we had our first whole school mass. Year 3 sang and responded beautifully.

In Maths, we have been representing 3 digit numbers using equipment, drawing pictures and written representations.

In English, we have continued learning about fables. The children have been acting out the fable War and Peas and writing what thoughts the characters might have. Then the children wrote a news report to tell people about the big fight and performed it to the class.

In Geography, we have been looking at maps and describing the climates in different countries.

In PE, the children have been developing their running and jumping skills.

In Science the children have been learning about the nutrients that humans need to keep them healthy.

Please draw a healthy meal with the correct amount of nutrients using the picture attached on the sheet given.

Week 3

Another fun, busy week in Year 3! In Maths, we have continued using equipment and pictures to make numbers to 100. We have been using mathematical vocabulary to compare numbers and have been investigating different ways of making 3-digit numbers.

In English, we read War and Peas by Michael Foreman. We imagined we met the mean king and retold our experience meeting him. We designed our own imaginary world of food and wrote some excellent descriptions.

In Religion, we have been thinking about how we learn about God.

In Science, we learnt about how plants make their own food and how animals get their food.

We had fun learning the letter A and B then we played Hot Cross Buns on the recorder. In Geography, we compared the weather in July in different countries. In Computing we were introduced to programming blocks and identify the objects in the Scratch project (sprites and backdrops)

Week 2

We have had a busy week in Year 3! In Maths, we have been using equipment to make different numbers in different ways to show the value of each digit. Then the children explained the similarities and difference between two numbers.

In English, we have been reading different fables and identifying their morals. Then we compared different versions of the same fable. Can you find some fables at home to read?

On Wednesday, we had a wonderful day celebrating Mary’s birthday. We made cards, decorated our Peace Garden, sang songs, ate lollies and cake, and then danced. The children were presented with the question “How do we see Mary in art? They looked at different pictures of Mary and discussed what they told us about her.

In History, we wrote and presented weather reports. In Computing we started using a program called Scratch and we had our first recorder lesson!

Our focus in PE this term is Invasion Games. We played games to develop the skill of dodging. The children loved playing football at lunchtime on Wednesday with a football coach.

Home Learning

Next week the children will design their own imaginary world to support their writing. In preparation, please cut out images from food magazines or food labels. They need lots of different types of food/drink pictures that they would like to be in their world.

Spellings – This term’s spellings are on the spelling tab on our class page. Please practise spellings and think about how you would use each word in a sentence.

Welcome Back!

It was lovely to see the children this morning. They settled into the class and their new key stage well.

We started the day with an Act of Worship where the children shared their feelings about the year ahead.

In the afternoon, we had great excitement using the KS2 playground equipment.

PE Days are Tuesdays and Fridays so children must wear their PE kits on those day.

Summer 2 Week 5

Sports Day 2021!

Year 3 used all of their sporting talents on Wednesday, when competing in our whole school Sports Day. We have some very talented shot putters, long jumpers , footballers and sprinters in our class. I was also very impressed with their dodging and balancing skills, when zooming through the obstacle course.! Well done Year 3!

We had great fun cheering on our houses and everyone enjoyed a well deserved ice-lolly at the end. Congratulations to St. Vincent House, the overall winners of Sports Day 2021!

Summer 2 Week 4

This week the children have worked hard to finish their Egyptian stories based on the novel The Egyptian Cinderella. I have been so impressed with their use noun phrases and description. It has also been wonderful to see how they have used their historical knowledge in their stories. In History, the children have also investigated where, why and how pyramids were made. During Art they created their own Egyptian necklaces.

In cricket the class have focused on their battling skills – trying hard to strike into space.

During Maths the children have been using arrays and grouping to divide and multiply.

In RSE we have explored what community means and how our family, friends, school and Church community help us feel loved and closer to God.

Summer 2 Week 3

The children had great fun in Science this week, exploring the different magnetic forces and performing magnetic playscripts that they had written.

We have played continuous cricket in P.E. –  developing our batting and fielding skills. I have been very impressed by the Egyptian projects the children have completed – thank you for your continued support at home. We have used these projects and other secondary sources in History to learn out about pharaohs and the importance of the river Nile.

There was much excitement on Wednesday in school, when a helicopter ambulance landing in the filed next to our school – this sparked many conversations about forces used to fly and emergency services. We ended the week with a special Mass and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. The children showed great reverence and were fantastic witnesses to our faith.

Summer 2 Week 2

This week has once again been very busy.  We have used secondary sources in History to research the Ancient Egyptians and created a timeline of key events. We have also begun to paint our canopic jars – next week we will add hieroglyphics.

In PE we have learnt the difference between bowling and throwing in cricket – we have some talented bowlers in our class. During Science we have investigated and explored the strength of different magnetic forces and what magnets can be used for in everyday life.

We have also visited the local pond as part of wellbeing. The children observed many different creatures and plants on the walk  including, Wheat, Buttercups, Red Kites, Dragonflies, ladybirds and spiders.

We have been learning about discipleship in RE and identifying people in our community who show discipleship qualities.

I have also been impressed with the children’s maths learning as they have been dividing 100 into equal groups of 2, 4, 5 and 10 and also used whole part models to regroup 100 in different ways.

Summer 2 Week 1

This week Year 3 have found themselves immersed in their new History topic, Ancient Egypt. They have created some fantastic pharaoh portraits and scarabs in Art using their collage skills. While in History they have used secondary sources to research some of their own questions. In English they have used their inference skills to ask and answer questions based on the story ‘ The Egyptian Cinderella’ by Shirley Climo.

During Maths we have applied our mental maths and place value skills this week to answer mathematical word problems. We also enjoyed starting our cricket unit in P.E. with the All Stars cricket coach Tom and have started learning to play the recorder with Mrs McNamara.

On Friday we held a Mass of Thanksgiving in class. The children read beautifully and were very respectful. Thank you Mrs Joyce for your help and thank you Father Shaun and Francesca for preparing the children for their First Holy Communions.

Egyptian History Project 

Over the next two weeks, I would like the children to research the Ancient Egyptians and fill three or four pages of their project books. They might like to research the pyramids, pharaohs, God’s, mummification, hieroglyphics or the Nile.  Please return these project books by the 23rd June.
