Year 2 Blog Week 20

As part of our Other Faith Week 2019, Year 2 visited the local Oshwal, Jain Temple in Northaw. The children were very respectful inside temple and found out a lot about Jainism. Everyone was amazed to see the giant hand symbol, which means – Stop, No violence. Back at school, Year 2 used their computing skills to record and present everything they learnt about Jainism.

Year 2 Blog Week 19

Year 2 have enjoyed a week of creative learning. In Religion, we have been looking at the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Through role play, Year 2 explored what happens during the Sacrament of Reconciliation. The children thought about times when they have wronged others and made cards to say sorry.

In Maths, we focused on ‘Take one Calculation’. The children thought about the different strategies that can be applied to one calculation and the most efficient strategy for solving the calculation.

We celebrated Safer Internet Day 2019 on Tuesday. The children enjoyed  hearing the story #Goldilocks – A cautionary tale. We explored the idea of consent online and the children shared lots of great examples of how we ask, give and receive permission online. Everyone agreed that you must ask permission before taking someones photograph.

Year 2 Blog Week 17

It has been another busy week of learning in Year 2. We have continued work on our Religion unit – sacramental people. The children enjoyed reading the story – Maybe God is like that too by Jennifer Grant. We thought about how we see, hear and feel God’s presence in the words and actions of others. Image result for maybe god is like that too doorman

In Maths, we have been focusing on using different strategies to add 2 digit numbers. Everyone worked very well and ensured they could prove all their answers. On Wednesday, Bishop John Sherrington came to visit our school.  It was lovely to meet him and ask him questions about his calling. From our research we found out that Bishop John Sherrington has a degree in Mathematics from Cambridge University. Year 2 delighted in asking Bishop John some tricky number riddles!

In English we have been focusing on non chronological reports. Year 2 had great fun using different source material to research sharks. Our author of the month is David Walliams and we are currently enjoying his tale of a Gangsta Granny.

This week we were very lucky to have Luca, a German exchange student, volunteering in our class. A BIG thank you to Luca for all his help and we wish him well in his future studies.

Welcome back everyone!

I hope you had a blessed Christmas and wish you every blessing for this new year ahead.

It has been a busy first week back in Year 2. We have been  focusing on the story of the Epiphany from Mathew’s Gospel. The children examined the story of the wise men visiting the baby Jesus and questioned the different characters from the story in a hot seating activity.

We made some colourful gifts of Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh for a display in our classroom.

During a class Act of Worship, the children thought carefully about what gift they will bring to our school and their homes this year and offered these in our Friday assembly.

The Magical Christmas Jigsaw

It has been a joyous week in school. It was Lights… Camera …. Action for the KS 1 Christmas Nativity.

At a bustling Christmas market full of the joyful sounds of carol singers and market sellers, five excited children come across a very special stallholder. She gives them a very old Christmas jigsaw in return for the promise that they will find time to complete it on Christmas Eve. As the children gradually piece the jigsaw together with the help of a very special visitor, the Christmas story comes to life.

Year 2 along with Year 1, acted, sang and danced brilliantly and they should all be very proud of themselves.

Thank you to everyone for attending and for your donations to The Passage.

Have a peaceful weekend.

Year 2 Blog Week 12

The Year 2 classroom has been a hive of activity this week. In English, we have been learning about The Legend of the Poinsettia. There is an old Mexican legend about how Poinsettias and Christmas come together. The children thoroughly enjoyed finding out about the ‘Flowers of the Holy Night’ and everyone created some fantastic story maps. Thank you to Eric for bringing in a beautiful Poinsettia for our classroom! Watch this space for our finished retellings of The Legend of the Poinsettia.

In Maths this week, we have been looking at reasoning problems. The children worked well at solving these problems and explaining the reasons for their answers.

Can you solve this number problem?

I am not below 20.     I am a multiple of 5.    One of my digits is 5.     I am above 21.

Add my digits and the total is 7.

Who am I?    12    43    25    6     35    15

This week we have been thinking about how during Advent we are preparing for the coming of God. Year 2 created a beautiful Advent calendar display for our sacred space in our classroom.

In Science we have been learning about health and hygiene. The children carried out a simple experiment to see how easily germs spread. Everyone went on and created wonderful posters about the importance of washing your hands.

In Computing we have been learning about how technology can sense conditions around us. The children had great fun using different apps to measure sound levels and light intensity.
