May 2, 2025/in Year 6, Year 6 Archive /by Margaret Joyce

A short and sunny week in Year 6 has seen us continue to revise for our upcoming SATs. We completed some more practice papers and we have been really impressed with the children’s attitude- keep it up, Year 6!

We are looking forward to our traditional May Procession taking place next Friday 9th May.  As part of this special event, our eldest boy and girl, Charlie and Chloe, will have the honour of leading the procession. Our House Captains will also be taking a key role, leading the assembly.  We warmly invite all families to join us for this meaningful celebration, if you are able to attend.

On Tuesday, we had a cricket session with Mr Moretti. The children worked on their fielding skills.

It was a pleasure to spend time with Reception today in their cool and shady outdoor area.

Have a wonderful long weekend and we will see you on Tuesday 6th May. There is morning enrichment on Tuesday 6th May BUT there is no after school enrichment.

There will also be morning and after school enrichment on Thursday 8th May.

Thank you!

Mrs Lines and Mrs McNamara

Summer 1 Week 2

May 2, 2025/in Archives, Reception, Reception Archive /by Margaret Joyce
Our theme this half term is transport. This week we read the story Where the Wild Things are. Max travelled on a boat across the water. We thought about different ways to travel across water and the children talked about where they would go to on a boat. The children made boats using tin foil and Lego then they tested whether they could float. The children made their own wild things and wrote a description about them.
We have had beautiful weather this week, so we spent a lot of time outside in our outdoor airport and aeroplane.  The children have been acting out going on holiday, into an airport, putting their bags through security and getting on a plane.
In Maths we have been learning about the numbers 14-19. The children having been using tens frame to make the numbers. 10 + 6 =16 l, 10 + 9 =19 Please practise reading numbers to 20 at home.  We have also been practising counting to 100, please practise at home.
On Wednesday, we played games. The children demonstrated great listening and teamwork.
In Religion, we heard the story of the Ascension. The children acted out the story, wrote sentences and made a moving picture.
Have a lovely weekend.
Kind regards,
Mrs Carey and The Early Years Team

May 2, 2025/in Year 1, Year 1 Archive /by Margaret Joyce

Year 1 had a lovely end to the week this afternoon, when they joined Year 2 on a walk to the pond on the farmland adjacent to the school. This was part of their current science learning on animals; today they were looking specifically for different birds and amphibians. The children were treated with a chorus of different birdsong, while sitting by the pond. Mrs Hilton had previously downloaded a special app that identifies which particular bird is singing, and so was able to tell the children which variety of bird they were listening to. In the pond itself, the children spotted many newts, frogspawn, pond skaters and snails, and even a frog! When the two classes got back to school, they cooled down with some fresh water and a sing-along with Mrs Heymoz and her guitar in the Peace Garden.

In RE this week, the children sequenced the events in Jesus’ life from his birth to his resurrection, through creating individual story maps.

In Maths, Year 1 finished their unit on measuring length and height, and began a new one on measuring mass and volume. In English, they learnt about converting singular nouns to plurals by adding -s/-es to  word, revised how to join two sentences using ‘and’ and they wrote their own dialogues to go with the film, ‘Whistleless’.

Next week, we begin swimming lessons on Wednesday afternoon. Please make sure that your child has been given parental consent and that they have their swimming kit with them. Please also ensure that your child has a sun hat and water bottle in school every day. Thank you.

Spelling Shed focus this week is: Words with the digraphs ‘ph’ and ‘wh’ and  Adding ‘-s’ or ‘-es’ to make plurals.

Have a wonderful extended bank holiday weekend,

Ms Pemberton and the Year One team

Year 5 – 02/05/25

May 2, 2025/in Year 5 /by Margaret Joyce

Here’s a glance at what Year 5 have been learning this week:

  • Maths – We have been working on finding fractions of amounts and building on this to calculate the whole when given a fraction. The children also made connections between finding a fraction of an amount and multiplying a fraction by an integer.

  • RE – We began our new unit, To the Ends of the Earth, exploring how the Holy Spirit strengthened the disciples and how Christians today are called to live by the Spirit.

  • Science – We started our topic Reversible and Irreversible Changes by learning about dissolving. The children used key vocabulary such as solute, solvent, solution, soluble and insoluble, and tested a range of substances for solubility.

Next week is a short week, and on Thursday we will be marking VE Day. Children are invited to come to school dressed in red, white and/or blue. Throughout the day, they will take part in learning linked to World War Two.

On Friday, we will hold our annual May Procession. All children are asked to bring a flower or plant to carry forward to honour Mary during the procession. If you would like to order a plant for your child to present, please make a payment of £3 via Schoolcomms. These plants will be used to brighten our class gardens and peace garden after the procession. Children should wear their school uniform and not their PE kit on this day.

May 2, 2025/in Year 2, Year 2 Archive /by Margaret Joyce

Although the week has been short and sunny, the children in Year 2 covered a lot.

In English, we carried on in our ‘Zahra’ (narrative) learning editing and improving our retelling, before looking at statements and exclamations. We also looked at expanded noun phrases to describe the setting.

In Maths, we read scales to measure mass in kg, as well as, measure capacity and volume. Next week, we are moving on to fractions.

In Geography, we finished our unit on Kampong Ayer, where we considered the differences in transport and schooling with the UK. The children made paper boats as part of their learning, coming up with design elements that would support their daily lives if they lived in Asia.

In PE, the class continued their unit of Play ground games led by Mr Moretti.

In Science, the children continued their new unit of ‘Living things and their habitat’ by going for a walk around our grounds and classifying their findings as ‘living, once alive and never alive’.

In Computing, the children started their new unit of programming, looking at instructions (algorithms) and programming Floor robots (Beebots).

Please remember, swimming starts next week Wednesday! Please ensure that the children have a named swimming bag and that their uniform is clearly labelled so there won’t be any confusion in the changing rooms. Tuesday remains a PE day, please make sure the children come to school in their PE kit.

On Thursday, we will celebrate VE day and therefore the children can come wearing red, blue and white colours.

On Friday, we will participate in the May Procession– please check the School Gateway tab for that or bring in a blossom, piece of flower. Parents are welcome!

Have a lovely weekend,

Ms Varga

Summer 1 Week 2

May 2, 2025/in Year 4, Year 4 Archive /by Margaret Joyce

This afternoon, our cricket session was filled with excitement as we played quick cricket under the bright sunshine. Everyone had a great time practising their batting, bowling, and fielding skills. We all managed to score lots of wickets, which was fantastic, and it felt great to see the children work together as a team. The atmosphere was lively as we cheered each other on and celebrated successes.

We have also enjoyed applying our editing skills in Computing. As you can see, the children can crop, edit, add filters, rotate, import pictures and add text to photos.

I hope you enjoy the long weekend
Miss Pringle
