15th – 19th January in Y3

We have been focusing on multiplication in Y3 this week, making links to addition and using arrays to help us solve tricky word problems. The children have created a wonderful ‘array city’ display – Maybe over the weekend you could look for arrays on buildings or in everyday life.

The children have also been working hard to develop their mental fluency – maybe they could help estimate a shopping bill or challenge you to a 4 timetables race!

In English we have been learning about and identifying similes, metaphors and personification. Next week we are going to be using these writing techniques in our own stories.

I have seen a real improvement in the children’s fitness levels over the year and they have really impressed me in P.E. swimming and our fitter future sessions – well done Y3.

In RE we are focusing on the Exodus story. The children are now able to navigate the Bible and have sequenced the events of Exodus.

We also had a visit from the NSPCC this week, which the children found very interesting – thank you Mrs McNamara for organizing it.

Football Coach

This week, we were fortunate to be visited by a coach from the Arsenal ‘In the Community’ scheme. He taught us all about the ABCS of football- agility, balance, coordination and speed. The children threw themselves into every challenge and really gave their all. I was proud to see how determined they were to improve their personal scores. We have 4 more of these sessions and look forward to seeing the children develop their skills and teamwork.

 Curriculum

We have continued with our theme of suspense and mystery in English and began a new class text ‘The Boy in the Tower’ by Polly Ho-Yen. We have been exploring the characters and the relationships between them.

In science, we have been building up our knowledge of life cycles of birds and amphibians. By using sources of information on the internet, we discovered more about migration, moulting, incubation and metamorphosis.

Our focus in computing this week was debugging. The children were able to identify 2 bugs in an algorithm and fix them to create beautiful spirals.

During R.E lessons, we have begun learning about the epic story of Exodus. The children have looked at the story in the context of place and time as well as sequencing the main events.

In maths, we have been focusing on using the short method to solve division. I was really impressed to see how quickly Year 5 learnt to express remainders as fractions and decimals.

We ended the week with a visit from our new classmate, Annabel. It was wonderful to have her with us today and all of Year 5 were extremely excited to meet her. We all look forward to Annabel starting at Pope Paul next week.
Have a great weekend

In maths, we have continued work on measurements. The children have been working very hard on their mental fluency as well as solving word problems.  The caption of the week in maths has been ‘Prove it!’ Year 2 are understanding the importance of showing their workings out. We have seen lots of different strategies employed… partitioning as well as drawing dienes and number lines!

In P.E. this week this week the children have been concentrating on indoor games. It was a lot of fun! IMG_0988

Week 17 Blog

This week the children listened to the Passover story with awe and amazement. They were truly captivated by the events and were able to show their understanding through drawing story maps. In Maths, they engaged in problem solving, finding the missing part number to  total the whole number. They worked in pairs and took turns to hide the objects.

Week 2: 12th January

This week has flown by!

We started our new English unit looking at an old Vietnamese Folk-tale – ‘The Fly and the Fool’ and learnt about the characters – Mr Lo, The Judge, Lo and Lan.  The children worked in partners and their table groups to ensure they understood the story and acted out part of the story as well.  We are continuing with this focus on playscripts next week.  In Mathematics, we learnt about conversion in our topic of Measurement and starting learning more about shapes. In RE we spent time talking about Pope Francs’ teaching on the Joy of Love through his  writing ‘Amoris Laetitia’.

In PE this week, Coach Duggan joined us to assist with our learning and he will be with us this term.  The children had great fun doing a variety of athletic activities.  On Wednesday, the children went to Furzefield for their swimming lesson and a great time was had by all.

As part of a project with Stormont School to enhance our outdoor learning focus we are taking part in an environmental art project with their art specialist Ruth Burgess.  They will be planning and creating willow sculpture to enhance our Peace Garden trellis so we are all excited on seeing their creations in Spring!

So, for Year 4 this term, we have a lot going on and keeping us busy!

I have signed the children onto e-books via the Oxford University:

Reception Blog Week 15

Dear Parents,

A warm welcome back to you. Thank you all so much for your generous Christmas gifts; we really do appreciate it.

Last week we launched our online learning journeys. We hope you are enjoying them. Thank you so much to those of you who have already uploaded your own observations, commented or liked an observation added by us. If you have any problems accessing the journey, please see Mrs Theo.

This week, we introduced our new weekly ‘Challenge Books’ for the children to use during Child Initiated Learning. Inside their  books, the children were given four challenges each, with space to write new ones to extend further if needed. The class absolutely loved them! Those children who completed four or more challenges this week, were rewarded with a certificate this afternoon.

IMG_7928 IMG_7937 IMG_7938 IMG_7948 IMG_7966 IMG_8014 IMG_8022  IMG_8055

This week, we have been focussing our learning around the book ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’. The children were shocked to find a crime scene at the Fairy Tale Cottage, when they came into school on Tuesday. Somebody had clearly broken in and messed up the cottage! The children decided to investigate and had lots of fun looking around for clues.

IMG_7982 IMG_7983 IMG_7984 IMG_7987 IMG_7988 IMG_8033 IMG_8035

Amongst other things, the children also enjoyed exploring dry and wet porridge oats, making character masks, creating new homes for the three bears, building traps to capture Goldilocks, writing sorry letters from Goldilocks to the Three Bears, writing wanted posters and creating maps through the forest.

IMG_7836 IMG_7839 IMG_7859 IMG_7860 IMG_7861 IMG_7862  IMG_7865 IMG_7875 IMG_7878 IMG_7883 IMG_7885 IMG_7889 IMG_7894 IMG_7895 IMG_7896 IMG_7924 IMG_7933 IMG_7964 IMG_7971 IMG_7975 IMG_7976 IMG_8024

Next week we will be focussing on the traditional tale, ‘Little Red Riding Hood’.

Enjoy your weekend

Year 6 – 12/01/18

Since being back from the Christmas holidays, Year 6 have started the new year full of energy and with refreshed minds.

Our maths has been focused on fractions, decimals and percentages, and the children have really strengthened their ability to convert between them.

In English, the class has been producing lots of writing based around The Spiderwick Field Guide to the Fantastical World Around You. They have been pushing themselves to use more precise and interesting vocabulary and have been producing thoroughly engaging pieces.

We began our new Science topic called Evolution and Inheritance by creating a timeline of life on Earth. Our minds were blown when we learnt that humans have only been around for 10,000 of the 5 billion years that the Earth has existed (Weekend Challenge: Can you tell me what that is as a fraction, decimal and percentage?! Post answers below). To try and visualise the scale, the children worked as a team to map the timeline on a roll of toilet paper.

IMG_0592 IMG_0593 IMG_0596

Some of the children were wondering how we knew which animals lived before us when we’ve only been around relatively recently. Therefore, the children discovered the process of fossilisation, and had a go at being paleontogists by identifying some fossils.

IMG_0600 IMG_0601 IMG_0602 IMG_0603 IMG_0604 IMG_0605 IMG_0606 IMG_0607 IMG_0611On Thursday, we had the treat of visiting Pizza Express, where the children enjoyed making their own pizzas and subsequently eating them for lunch. We even had a mini maths lesson whilst they ate their pizzas in the classroom by discussing what fractions, decimals and percentages different children had eaten or had left!

This term in PE, we are focusing on Dance. On Thursday, the children worked in groups to choreograph a dance to Daft Punk’s Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger. I was impressed with the way they thought about symmetry, synchronisation and individual strengths within their groups, and I look forward to seeing how they develop this dance in the coming weeks!

2018 Year Of The Family

IMG_0965IMG_0970IMG_0971IMG_0972

This week we launched our Year Of The Family 2018. Last year we had a wonderful celebration of 50 years of our school and now we look forward to the next stage of our school’s journey. The Year of the family will link to Pope Francis’ teaching about the family in his writing Amoris Laetitia (The Joy of Love) where he writes

What God most wants from us is to knock on the doors of families and to find people who love each other, who bring up their children with love and who contribute to a society of truth, goodness and beauty.”

The Catholic World Meeting of Families was started by St John Paul in 1994 and takes place every three years in a different country. Pope Francis has announced that the next World Meeting of Families will be held in Dublin in 2018. Families from all over the world will gather to celebrate their lives together, to share their experiences from different parts of the world, to reflect on the different challenges they face and to grow together in faith. In support of this event, during the year, we will reflect on and celebrate the relationship that exists between our home, school and parish families and how we can develop ways of bringing the love and joy of Christ to others. This week the children have been celebrating their families by reflecting on the people who bring joy and happiness to their lives.

Year 2 Blog Week 15

Happy New Year and Welcome back! I hope you all had a joyful break. Thank you for all your kindness and generosity last term. We have another busy and exciting term ahead of us. Year 2 have already thrown themselves into their learning.

Dublin, Ireland, has been chosen by Pope Francis to host the next World Meeting of Families 2018, guided by the theme “The Gospel of the Family: Joy for the World”. In R.E. this week we launched The Year of the Family. We discussed belonging to a family and how even though families are all different and live in many different places, they share one thing: love.

In Maths we have been looking at capacity and measure. The children used their reasoning skills to solve a thirsty problem. The children had to put 7 glasses in the correct order. Some of the clues were tricky – The two full glasses of orange juice are next to each other.

capacity

In Computing we have been learning about algorithms and repetition. There were lots of great examples of what you could program a robot to do.

Joseph – ‘I will program my robot to do my homework.’

Phoebe – ‘I will program my robot to sing a song.’

William – ‘I will program my robot to clean my bedroom.’

The children discovered that giving precise instructions is very important!

Year 5- 12/01/18

This week, we began celebrating our ‘Year of Family’ at Pope Paul. We learnt about family in different contexts, such as home, school and parish. To do this, the children created leaflets about our parish, and acted out modern versions of a parable set in school.

IMG_0634 IMG_0635 IMG_0636 IMG_0637
IMG_0639 IMG_0640 IMG_0641

It would be wonderful if children could bring in pictures of their families next week to put in a book for our prayer table.

Year 5 has been full of suspense and mystery this week as we read ‘The Watertower’ by Gary Crew. The sinister picture book provoked an enthusiastic response from the children and they loved looking for the clues and patterns in both the illustrations and text.

In Science, we began learning about the life cycle of birds. The children got hands on by cracking open some eggs to look at the structure inside. We learnt some new vocabulary and saw parts of the egg we had never noticed before. It was interesting to discuss how these parts are essential in creating life for the baby chick inside.
