Year 5- 2/2/2018

This week, our focus in football was teamwork and strategy.

IMG_0790 IMG_0792 IMG_0791

This week, we were also visited by the NSPCC. They spoke to the class about different types of abuse and discussed who to speak to if they are ever worried about anything. The children were incredibly mature and listened beautifully.

On Thursday, we visited Pizza Express and the children each made their own Pizza. They enjoyed a tour of the kitchen and freezer and were excited to take their Pizzas back to school for lunch. It took a lot of self control for them to not open them up on the coach journey back! They smelt amazing! Once back at school, we discussed if Pizzas were healthy. A lot of good points were made for both sides.

In English, the situation has become very desperate for the main character in our book. The children have now planned the next chapter of the story, filled with more tension and ending in suspense. They will bring these plans to life next week and I look forward to reading them.

In maths, we have continued to solve problems, this time focussing on the strategy of working backwards.

In science, we have begun learning about the life cycles of mammals. The children have created life cycle wheels about a certain type of mammal and next week they will share their knowledge with each other.

In R.E we have continued to learn about Passover, focusing on what beliefs the story teaches us. It was wonderful to hear the children felt it taught them about having trust in God. I also enjoyed reading about when they have used this belief in their everyday lives.

Have a great weekend

English- Inspired by our trip to Pizza Express and our discussions about it at school, I have asked the children to write a recipe for a Pizza. I have given the children the list of SPAG elements I would like them to include. Our spellings remain the same this week and the children will be tested on Tuesday.

Year 5 26/01/18

Our Football coaching continued this week and the focus was on improving turning skills. Scott, our coach, commented on the improvement he saw and how impressed he was with their teamwork. Keep it up year 5.

In science, our focus has been on comparing insect life cycles. The children had a clear understanding of a butterfly lifecycle from their KS1 learning and they are now able to discuss it using a wider range of technical vocabulary. This knowledge was then applied to a ladybird lifecycle. Many of the children were surprised to know it has a larva state and were interested to see what it looked like. We then made comparisons between the two life cycles by creating fractions of how long they spend in each stage. We used this information to create pie charts by hand and using Excel. This led to some very challenging discussion about how data can be presented and how to interpret it.

In English, we have been building up our writing skills by practising how to write dialogue accurately, using pronouns to add mystery and use of modal verbs and adjectives of possibility. All of these skills have helped the children to show their knowledge of the text and their deepening understanding of the characters.

Our maths learning has focussed on problem solving this week, in particular, modelling the problem using the bar method. To support the children’s understanding in this, they used an online game called thinking blocks. The discussion in the room during this lesson was fantastic and the children demonstrated a rapid improvement in their understanding. This website will form part of the home learning for this week.

In R.E this week, the children took on the roles of Moses and Aaron, writing vital instructions for the Israelites about Passover. They showed a great understanding of events and used their knowledge of instruction writing to make the information clear.

This week, we had a visitor from Germany in our class, Sandra. She supported the children in lessons and it was wonderful to have her.

Have a fantastic weekend

Football Coach

This week, we were fortunate to be visited by a coach from the Arsenal ‘In the Community’ scheme. He taught us all about the ABCS of football- agility, balance, coordination and speed. The children threw themselves into every challenge and really gave their all. I was proud to see how determined they were to improve their personal scores. We have 4 more of these sessions and look forward to seeing the children develop their skills and teamwork.

 Curriculum

We have continued with our theme of suspense and mystery in English and began a new class text ‘The Boy in the Tower’ by Polly Ho-Yen. We have been exploring the characters and the relationships between them.

In science, we have been building up our knowledge of life cycles of birds and amphibians. By using sources of information on the internet, we discovered more about migration, moulting, incubation and metamorphosis.

Our focus in computing this week was debugging. The children were able to identify 2 bugs in an algorithm and fix them to create beautiful spirals.

During R.E lessons, we have begun learning about the epic story of Exodus. The children have looked at the story in the context of place and time as well as sequencing the main events.

In maths, we have been focusing on using the short method to solve division. I was really impressed to see how quickly Year 5 learnt to express remainders as fractions and decimals.

We ended the week with a visit from our new classmate, Annabel. It was wonderful to have her with us today and all of Year 5 were extremely excited to meet her. We all look forward to Annabel starting at Pope Paul next week.

Readtheory is, as always, optional. The children have really enjoyed doing this and many are earning over 50 Dojos a week for their efforts. Keep it up year 5.

Year 5- 12/01/18

This week, we began celebrating our ‘Year of Family’ at Pope Paul. We learnt about family in different contexts, such as home, school and parish. To do this, the children created leaflets about our parish, and acted out modern versions of a parable set in school.

It would be wonderful if children could bring in pictures of their families next week to put in a book for our prayer table.

Year 5 has been full of suspense and mystery this week as we read ‘The Watertower’ by Gary Crew. The sinister picture book provoked an enthusiastic response from the children and they loved looking for the clues and patterns in both the illustrations and text.

In Science, we began learning about the life cycle of birds. The children got hands on by cracking open some eggs to look at the structure inside. We learnt some new vocabulary and saw parts of the egg we had never noticed before. It was interesting to discuss how these parts are essential in creating life for the baby chick inside.

Welcome Back- Year 5

Happy New Year!

It has been great to catch up with the children and hear about their exiting break. It seems many of them enjoyed their Christmas lunches and ate all of their vegetables! The Dojo count is really climbing!

In our first two days back, we focused on the Epiphany. We have reflected on its significance and thought about what gift we will bring to our school and homes this year. We have also compared our traditions with Scripture.

In maths, we started to look at formal written methods for addition and subtraction. We used this knowledge to solve missing number calculations and some cryptarithms. The children really enjoyed doing these and it was lovely to see them buzzing with excitement so early in the term!

In science, we began our new unit on living things, with particular focus on life cycles. The children have identified key vocabulary and have considered what they already know and what they would like to find out.

This week, there is no home learning. However, I have signed the children up to a reading comprehension site. As this is optional, there is no minimum or maximum number of activities they need to complete. To encourage the children to participate, they will earn a Dojo for each one they do. The link is below and usernames and passwords were given in class today.

Week 14

This week in year 5, we have been thoroughly entertained! We watched the KS1 Christmas show, Pope Paul’s Got Talent and we will be heading off to the pantomime tomorrow afternoon. We had a wide range of amazing talent to pick from to represent year 5 in the school show. Well done to Thomas and Sophie, who were voted to take part by the rest of year 5. They both did us proud, with Sophie coming in joint 1st place for fantastic magic- I thoroughly enjoyed my time as her assistant!

Snow

On Tuesday, we returned to school and were excited to get outside and have fun in the snow. We used the opportunity to plan an investigation about the best conditions for building a snowman.

We also created Haiku’s- a Japanese form of poetry dedicated to nature and seasons. The children followed the syllable rules well to capture the scene.

Science

This week, we became theme park developers and used our knowledge of forces to create new rides.  We thought about friction and weight distribution. Based on our investigations, we made recommendations and considered how to make improvements.

Instructions

We have continued to evaluate instructions this week. Today, we made magnetic putty and tomorrow we will use all we have learnt so far to write a set of instructions on how to make it. The children loved playing with the putty and watching the force of magnetism at work. They are very keen to take it home! They will be able to do so on Monday after school. The putty does require strong neodymium magnets to work and if you would prefer your child to keep it at school, please do let me know.

Week 13

In year 5 this week, we have been busily preparing for our Advent service this evening. They have learnt the words to the songs really well and sung beautifully in our rehearsal today.

We really enjoyed our visit from Bishop John Wilson on Wednesday. We welcomed him to our classroom and told him about our science learning. He gave us some grIMG_0421 IMG_0423 IMG_0424eat advice on how to prepare for the birth of Jesus- I hope Year 5 can follow the Bishop’s guidance.

In maths, we continued to work on our mental multiplication and division with a focus on regrouping.

In English, we have begun looking at instructions. We have identified their features and considered their target audiences.

In our Religious learning, we have drawn together everything we have learnt about prayer and the different forms of it we know. We have evaluated and compared them and also written our personal feelings about them. It has been really interesting to hear these responses.

I look forward to seeing you at the service this evening.

Week 12

In maths this week, we have been building on our factor and multiple knowledge to mentally multiply and divide. We have used a range of strategies to do this, such as regrouping, doubling, halving and using known facts.  The children were surprised to see how easily and efficiently they could calculate using large numbers and decimals. Well done Year 5!

In science, we investigated friction. Year 5 put their shoes to the test to find out which ones had greater friction and thought about why. To measure, we learnt how to use a Newton meter.

IMG_0479 IMG_0385 IMG_0384 IMG_0383 IMG_0382

Year 5 really are a talented bunch, and on Thursday we had the chance to watch them in their music concert. It was clear how hard they practise at home. I was proud of how well they performed and the confidence they showed.

IMG_0442 IMG_0438 IMG_0437 IMG_0435 IMG_0433 IMG_0428 IMG_0426 IMG_0425 IMG_0424 IMG_0423 IMG_0420 IMG_0419 IMG_0418

This week, it was national tree week. We celebrated this by weaving using natural materials from the trees in our school environment. Before heading out to gather our resources we discussed how weaving was the method the Saxons would have used to create their clothes. Once we collected what we needed, we headed back inside to weave so that our fingers were not too numb to work!

In assembly this morning, Year 5 placed their Advent Angels alongside the rest of the school in the hall. They have thought about how they will be more helpful and supportive of others during this time. Many have said they will be helping out at home- I’m sure you will look forward to this, parents!

I have been told many of you plan to hang your decorations this weekend. I hope you have a wonderful time doing this and of course enjoy attending the Christmas Fayre.

Have a great weekend.

Home Learning

In order to be fully prepared for the advent service, home learning this week is to learn the words to our songs. I have sent a copy home with each child.

I have also asked the children to complete a piece of science home learning. This is due on Tuesday 12th December. I would like the children to choose a key scientist in the area of forces and create a poster/report/fact file on them. The scientists and a link to some information can be found below.

Key Scientists

Sir Isaac Newton (1642 – 1727) – Formulated the laws of motion – http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/historic_figures/newton_isaac.shtml

Christopher Cockerell (1910- 1999) – Inventor of the hovercraft – http://www.design-technology.info/inventors/page11.htm

Archimedes (c.287 – c.212 BC) – Greek inventor – http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/historic_figures/archimedes.shtml

Week 11

This week in science, we have been learning about taking repeated measurements to improve reliability. We created autogyros with different blade surface areas, and timed how long they took to fall. In this lesson, we required our maths skills to calculate the surface areas and find the averages of our results.

IMG_0452 IMG_0453 IMG_0454 IMG_0455 IMG_0456

We have now concluded our Traction Man recounts and I have been impressed by the standard of writing. The children really engaged with the text and wrote in role brilliantly. I could see they considered their word choices, took inspiration from the story and used parentheses with increasing confidence.

On Thursday, we teamed up with year 6 to practise our athletic skills.
