Spring 2 Week 2

The highlight of the week was World Book Day. The children looked wonderful in their costumes and enjoyed sharing their favourite books.

In Maths, the children have been learning about perpendicular and parallel lines. They have been identifying different lines, drawing lines and labelling lines.

In English the children have been learning to not write notes to ensure they have the most important information.  We have been looking at persuasive writing and what words and phrases help to persuade people.

In Religion, we have been learning about Lent. The children made posters about what they know. Then the thought about how they might give alms, who they will pray for and what they might fast on during Lent.

This week was Fairtrade fortnight. The children learnt about the impact buying Fairtrade products has and thought of different ways to persuade others to buy Fairtrade products.

We started our new D&T topic of ‘Making Healthy Sandwiches.’ The children learnt about the different food types and voted on their favourite bread and sandwich filling. Then they planned their own healthy sandwich.

In Science, we started our topic on light. The children learnt that darkness is the absence of light. They investigated why we can see some objects in the dark and not others. Then they investigated the size of shadows.

Spring Term 2 Week 1

On Tuesday, Year 2 and 3 were invited to watch a gymnastics and dance show at Dame Alice Owen. The children enjoyed the show, and it was wonderful to see them dancing in the playground after. Then we made pancakes to celebrate Shrove Tuesday.

 

On Wednesday, the children went to church to celebrate Ash Wednesday. They sang and responded beautifully. The children thought about how they are going to journey with Jesus to the cross. They added these to the school display on Friday during assembly.

In Maths, the children have been learning about angles. The children went on an angle walk using a right-angle finder to identify objects with right angles. They made shapes and identified whether they had right angles, acute angles or obtuse angles. We have also been solving problems, identifying the start, the change and the result of a problems. The children have been drawing bar models to solve problems.

In English, we started a new unit of persuasive writing. We read the story Stella and the Seagull and identified how she persuaded people to make a difference to the environment. The children thought about what people thought of Stella and how Stella felt about herself following her wonderful ideas. Then the children wrote a persuasive letter to their parents to try to persuade them to let them stay up later at night. They thought carefully about reasons to encourage parents to think about it.

In Science, we did an investigation to find out how permeable soil is.

Spring 2 Week 5

Another half term over! In English the children have been researching pirates and have written a non- chronological report. Children were encouraged to focus on prepositions to provide more detail to the reader. Then they made a book on pirates as their final piece. At the end of the week the children collaged and painted pirate ships.

In Maths, we have been subtracting using column subtraction with and without regrouping. The children have worked hard to grasp this new concept.

In Art, the children completed their final pieces by adding stitching to their painting. They did a fantastic job and they are on display in the classroom.

On Wednesday, the choir children sang at Wembley Arena as part of the Young Voices. They sang with Heather Small and did some beatboxing with famous beatboxers. The children were a credit to our school with their amazing voices, great dancing and brilliant behaviour.

In Religion, we have been learning about the Beatitudes. We thought about different Saints and how they showed that they were Beatitudes person. Then we thought about people we know who are Beatitudes people. After we spoke to Mrs Lopez about how she lives her life as Beatitude person.

Spring 1 Week 4

In English, the children have been learning about non-chronological reports. They have looked at many different non-fiction texts and identified the features. Then they looked at animal books and organised information into subheadings. Next week, they will be writing their own non-chronological reports.

In Maths, the children have been learning column subtraction with and without regrouping. They have practised using Dienes equipment. They enjoyed playing a game to help them to understand how we regroup 1 ten into 10 ones.

In Science, we learnt about how fossils were formed. We also learnt about what soil is made from.

In Religion, we listen to the story Sermon on the Mount and then learnt about the Beatitudes. The children matched the beginning and end of some of the Beatitudes to help them to remember. We thought about how we can use the Beatitudes in our lives.

In PE, the children were developing their sequences on the apparatus. They made improvements to their spins, balances and jumps.

Spring 2 Week 3

Year 3 have had a busy week of learning. In English, the children planned and wrote an alternative version to the story The Finger Eater. Their writing showed their enjoyment of the story as they were able to use words and phrases that the author had used. This term, we have focused on using adverbs and subordinating conjunctions, which they used correctly in their writing to engage the reader.

In Maths, we have been learning to add with column addition with no regrouping and with regrouping. They children have demonstrated their understanding using resources and recording using the written method.

In Art the children painted the sea and the sky, ready to add some stitching to it.

In Religion, the children retold the story of the Epiphany as one of the characters. They have also been explaining the meaning of this feast.

In PE, the children practised and performed their sequences to the class and then transferred their skills on the apparatus.

Spring 1 Week 2

The highlight of the week was our first swimming lesson. The children quickly got into groups and started their lesson. In PE we continued gymnastics, the children made sequences with their partners with spins and balances.

This week was Other Faith Week. Year 3 learnt about the beliefs of Hinduism. We discussed the similarities and differences with our beliefs. Then we learnt about the pilgrimages that Hindus go on. The children made a board game with the facts they learnt about a pilgrimage to Kumbh Mela.

In Maths, the children have been reading and interpreting bar graphs and tables. They have answered questions and compared the results.

In English, we finished reading The Finger Eater. The children wrote a letter as one of the characters, describing the events using evidence from the text. The children have developed their sentence structure by using adverbs and subordinating conjunctions. Next week, the children will be planning and writing their own version of the story.

In Art, we started with some mark making. Then the children walked around the classroom to appreciate other children’s learning.

In Science, we sorted rocks according to their properties.

Spring 1 Week 1

Happy New Year! I hope you had a wonderful Christmas. Thank you for our cards and the generous gifts.

In Religion, the children listened to the story of the Three Wise Men visiting Jesus. We talked about the meaning of the word Epiphany and discussed the epiphany moments during the week. The children made stars with their epiphany moments on them.

In PE, our topic is Gymnastics. This week the children travelled in different ways along the apparatus. They thought carefully about how they jumped and landed safety.

In Maths, we have been revising the different addition and subtraction strategies and solving problems.

In English, the children have been enthusiastic about The Finger Eater Story. They have been gathering evidence from the text to describe the Finger Eater and to warn others about what they should do if they meet him. The children made fantastic predictions about what the characters could do to trick the unusual troll. Then the children made collages of the troll.

In Science the children have been learning about different types of rocks.

PE days are Tuesday and Wednesday. This Wednesday the children are starting swimming.

Autumn 2 Week 7

We have had a wonderful week! It started off with a snow day on Monday. It was great to hear the stories of the children playing in the snow and building snowmen. When we returned to school, we had a great time playing in the snow together.

On Tuesday, it was fantastic to watch the Year 3 and 4 Music Concert. Well done to all of the children who took part.

On Wednesday, we had our Christmas Lunch. We were excited to see the dining hall and tables decorated and enjoyed eating lunch together. In the afternoon, we watched the Year 5 and 6 Music Concert followed by the choir singing. Well done to all the Year 3 choir members who sang beautifully.

On Thursday, we went to Wyllyotts Theatre to watch Dick Whittington. The children enjoyed every minute of the show and were a great audience. They especially enjoyed the interval when we ate ice cream.

At the end the week, we had our Christmas Party and a visit from Father Christmas. We danced, ate cakes, had glitter tattoos, hair chalk and played games.

Autumn 2 Week 6

The highlight of the week was the Advent Service on Wednesday evening. I was so proud of the children’s reading, singing and dancing.

The children have been learning different strategies to subtract 2 and 3 digit numbers.

In English, we have been reading clerihews, comparing them with limericks and identifying their features. The children planned their own clerihews on a book character or a famous person and will write one next week. They have worked hard to find rhyming words and to remember the pattern of a clerihew.

In Religion, the children have been retelling Matthew’s story of The Birth of Jesus. The Year 6 children and the travelling nativity visited our class to tell us the story of the journey to Bethlehem.
