8.1.18

What a busy week!

Thank you all for your generous food donations throughout Advent. On Tuesday we took the items down to Sainsbury’s for the food bank. They were extremely grateful to receive our donations and assured us that we would be helping many families.

We have also started swimming this week, which was great fun. Mr Dugan is supporting in PE this term – please ensure kits are in on Tuesdays –  currently we are doing indoor athletics.

In science we have been investigating light sources and in RE we have been celebrating our family both at home and at school.

Home learning will be sent home this weekend, children will have taken note of their new reading days – they will need their reading book and record on this day.

Regards

Miss Pringle

Happy New Year From Y3

Happy New Year, I hope you had a restful and prayerful holiday. Thank you all very much for your lovely cards and generous gifts.

The children have made a fantastic start to the Spring term. We started the week by reflecting on the 12 days of Christmas and celebrating Epiphany – they have made wonderful Epiphany promises and enjoyed making crowns to wear.

We have been exploring synonyms and antonyms in English and have enjoyed reading The Mousehole Cat in guided reading. In maths we have been exploring what strategies are most effective. Please keep practising your 4 and 6 timetables.

Home learning will begin next week.

Week 13: 8th December

This week, we have been busy preparing for the Advent Service.  All of you sang, danced, acted and spoke so well.  You acted so maturely in the service making it a special occasion for everyone who attended.

Bishop John Wilson visited our school on Wednesday and came into our classroom for a question and answer session.  You listened carefully to his responses to your questions….we even had the opportunity to wear his special ring!

19th November – 24th November in Y3

Year 3 have enjoyed starting their new science topic Light and Dark this week. We thought about what life would be like without light and tested whether humans could see without any light sources – we can’t!

Our Traction Man recounts are fantastic! The children have been working hard to edit and improve them ready for a big write next week;be prepared for a hall of fame on next week’s blog.

In maths we have completed many different number problems where the children had to use systematic approaches as well as trial and improvement. Can you solve this NRICH problem? We managed to find four different combinations in class!

1,2,3 Magic Square:

Arrange three 1s, three 2s and three 3s in this square so that every row, column and diagonal adds to the same total (6).

Celtic Harmony and Remembrance Day

This week we visited Celtic Harmony Camp near Hertford to experience a Warrior Day!

IMG_0101 IMG_0102 IMG_0106 IMG_0108 IMG_0111 IMG_0112

Upon arriving we were greeted by Owen a man from the Iron Age who led us to the camp, where we had to declare peace in order to be allowed entry! Once safely inside a round house (complete with fire) we were separated into two groups and we were given a name for our group; The Wolves and The Bears.

During the day we took part in lots of activities; including  archery, making headbands, Celtic warrior face paint, a quest in the forest to solve riddles and find clues to help us solve a problem, warrior skills and a weaving activity. We earned points (gold coin) for team work, listening and performance on each activity.

Year 3 found themselves completely immersed in this fun but educational day at the camp and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. I’m sure that you will agree that we all looked the part!

I would like to say a special thank you to Ms Coupland and Mrs Schofield for supporting us on this trip and joining in on all the activities to help the teams earn extra points!

Home learning

This week I would like the children to write a recount about our visit to Celtic Harmony on the double sided sheet provided. This will be used as part of out topic learning and put into our topic books but it will also support our English writing next week when we begin to look closely at the book ‘Traction Man is Here’ as we will writing recounts of Traction Man’s adventures.

The children should also practise their week 2 spelling, 4 time tables and read over the weekend please.

The children also led a beautiful Remembrance Day assembly today – I was so proud so how they all read and sang – thank you for coming to support, I’m sure you will agree that they did a great job. Well done Y3.

Have a lovely weekend,

Miss Pringle

In science we have tested the permeability of different rocks.

IMG_0075 IMG_0074 IMG_0073 IMG_0072 IMG_0071

We have also been working on mental addition and our 3 x tables. The children have been completing timetable grids each morning and looking for strategies to complete 2 and 3 digit additions mentally.

IMG_0066 IMG_0065 IMG_0063 IMG_0062 IMG_0061

In art we are creating masterpieces for the art exhibition later this month!Fronted adverbials and time conjunctions have been our focus in English – see if you can spot any whilst reading this weekend. Next week we will be writing poems with similes. We’ve also enjoyed indoor athletics in PE and have taken part in many fitter futures activities.

Trip next Tuesday to Celtic Harmony

Please ensure the children are dressed in warm clothes, suitable for being outdoors (wellies or old trainers, tracksuit bottoms and a jumper). They may also wear a stone age costume over the top but it is not compulsory.

Please see below for the children’s reading parts in assembly.

Jamie B

Good morning everyone. Welcome to 3’s assembly, Please join us in

saying our school mission prayer.

Rory

Our assembly today is all about remembering. How good are you at remembering things. Do you ever forget things?

Thomas

I sometimes forget to bring in my PE kit but I always remember when it’s my birthday.

Dejon

I sometimes forget to learn my spellings but I always remember when its pocket money day.

Nathaniel

I sometimes forget to tidy my bedroom but I always remember Christmas.

Finley

I try not to forget to say please and thank you. I try to remember my times tables.

Zachary

I try not to forget to bring in my home learning and I always try to remember to do my best.

Matthew L

Most people find it difficult to remember everything in their busy lives. There are lots of different things we can use to help us remember things.

Patrycja

Important events can be written on a calendar. You can keep important phone numbers in the memory of a mobile phone.

Jake

Post-it notes can remind us of things we need to do. You can record things you have done in a diary.

Emily

Some people tie a knot in a handkerchief to help them remember something. It is said that elephants never forget.

Natalie

Many people write a shopping list so that they don’t forget anything at the supermarket.

Alex

Certificates remind us of our achievements. Photograph albums hold many special memories.

AlexLet’s see how good your memories are. Which animals never forget?Who spoke about mobile phones?

Matthias

What else did Patrycja talk about? What do people take to the supermarket? Well done. You have remembered well.

Angelo

We can all recall special times and experiences. We all have both sad and happy memories. Remembering helps us to learn from the past and to plan for the future. The sharing of memories is an important part of family, school and community life.

Alexis

November is the time of year when we remember all those who sacrificed their lives for us during wars. The eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month marks the signing of the Armistice, on 11th November 1918, to signal the end of World War 1.

Tito

At 11am on November 11th 1918 the guns on the Western Front fell silent after more than four years of continuous fighting. Remembrance Sunday is held on the second Sunday in November, which is usually the Sunday nearest to 11th November. Special services are held at war memorials and churches all over Britain.

Heather

A national ceremony takes place at the Centotaph in London. There is a big parade attended by members of the Royal Family, the Government and men and women from the armed forces. You will be able to watch this on television on Sunday morning.

Ava

There is usually a 2 minutes silence so that people can remember the brave men and women who died in the First World War, Second World War and in other wars. It is a way of remembering not only past events but also the suffering that war continues to bring to the world today.

Ben

Some will remember heroes; others will remember friends whose lives have been lost. The sharing of memories in this way ensures we never forget those who have gone before.

Matthew S

Remembrance Day is also known as Poppy Day because it is traditional to wear an artificial poppy. These are sold by the Royal British Legion, a charity dedicated to helping war veterans. But why do we wear poppies to remember those who died in wars?

Bella

Some of the worst fighting in World War 1 took place in Flanders, the western part of Belgium. Buildings, roads, trees and natural life simply disappeared. All that was left was a sea of mud.

Megan C

Only one living thing survived – the poppies. These colourful red flowers grew everywhere where the soil had been disturbed. The sea of mud became a sea of red flowers. In class we have sketched and made paper Mache poppies.

Jamie H

The first Poppy Day was held in Britain on 11th November 1921 and raised a lot of money to help soldiers who had been wounded. The poppies are sold by the royal British Legion. This is a charity which looks after ex-service people and their families. Nearly 11 million people in the UK are eligible for support from the Legion today. People as young as 17 can be sent on active service so veterans are often much younger than people realise.

Meaghan S

We will now lead you in our schools act of remembrance. Let us now hold a two minutes silence to remember all those who gave their lives in war. You may like to bow your head, close your eyes or watch our remembrance movie. A bell will ring at the start and finish of the 2 minutes.

Emilia

A poem called For The Fallen is often read aloud during the ceremony. Please read its most famous verse with us: They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning

We will remember them.

Let us pray.

Heston

Lord God, we thank you for the gift of memories that we can share together. Help us not to forget the feelings of others. May we heal painful memories through kindness and create better, happier memories for tomorrow.  Lord in your mercy hear our prayer.

Aisling

Help us to remember all those who have lost their lives in war. Help those who suffer because of war today. Help those in power bring peace and an end to violence. Amen.

Fiona

We will end by singing. Thank you for taking part in our act of remembrance today. Why not find out what ceremonies are happening where you live this weekend. Buy a poppy Or why not watch the London ceremony on television?

I hope you have a wonderful weekend.

Year 3 week 5

It was lovely to see so many of you this week at parents evening, thank you for your continued support.

This week we have focused on developing our mental maths skills and the children are working hard on the 2 and 3 timetables. In English we have been writing diary entries as ‘UG the boy Genius of the Stone Age’.

In art we have been using different collage techniques to create wonderful autumnal pictures and impressions of Stonehenge.

The children are working hard on their presentation and cursive handwriting – please see this link for letter for formation videos and support. http://www.teachhandwriting.co.uk/continuous-cursive-letters-refining.html

We are very much looking forward to studying India next week as our One Word Week focus and celebrating our learning with you on Friday morning.
