Autumn 2 Week 7

Another busy week in Reception Class. This week we have been reading and retelling the Christmas Story. The children acted out the story, made angels and stables, used the small world objects to retell the story and made books by sequencing pictures and adding words. On  Friday afternoon, we had a shepherds dinner in candle light. We ate dates, grapes and bread.

We decorated the classroom with angels, snowflakes and lots more in preparation for our Christmas Lunch and our party on Monday. Then we made hats to wear to our Christmas Lunch, we had a lovely lunch together in the class.

In Maths, we have been learning to use and follow prepositional language to describe where something is. We went on a shape hunt, we named the shape and described where we found it.

Outside, we have had Santa’s workshop and the children have been wrapping and labelling presents. They have been busy elves, helping Santa to get ready for Christmas.

The children made Christmas cards for their Year 6 reading partners and did wonderful writing inside their cards.

The children audioned for Pope Paul’s Got Talent. It was very difficult to choose only two acts! Well done to all that took part.

Please could you send in boxes of tissues as we are running out.

Remember to wear party clothes on Monday.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Friday, 15th December 2023

Our final full week of the half term has been very busy in Year 4.

The children had an opportunity to watch the KS1 Nativity dress rehearsal before attending their own Christmas music concerts on Monday afternoon. Huge well done to all children participating; your performances were brilliant!

On Monday the Year 3 and 4 children performed for us in a wonderful music concert.  Well done to all the singers and pianists!

On Wednesday, the class enjoyed a lovely Christmas lunch together:

We also spent time on our  D&T project creating prototypes for 2 further mechanisms, before applying these in our final Christmas cards.

Our class talent show on Friday has also been a huge success. Well done to all children who spent time practicing and gathered their courage to showcase their various talents from magic tricks to playing an instrument, dancing and singing! It has been an absolute pleasure watching you using your talents and doing your best!

I have been equally impressed by the home learning handed in this week. The children have done a wonderful job of presenting their learning to the class about special Christmas traditions from their chosen/home countries.

Have a wonderful weekend,

Ms Varga

This week in our RE lessons we have continued to think about the importance of prayer. Lectio Divina means “divine reading” in Latin. It’s a meditative way of reading the Bible in which we let go of our own agendas and open ourselves to what God is trying to say to us. Using the Gospel of Mark 1:1-14 as the stimulus, the children listened to the story of John the Baptist through the 5 steps: reading/meditating/prayer/contemplation and action. Today, the children researched Christmas customs in Trinidad and Tobago as part of our RE Focus Question on  Christmas Customs around the world.  The children also created an advent calendar writing prayers to be read and shared with the rest of the class throughout the advent season.

In Maths the children have continued to build upon their understanding of addition using the vertical  method (using 1/2 regroups) and investigated many ways to embed this.  In our fluency sessions, the children have revisited many of the skills learnt across this autumn term.  Please keep encouraging your child to log onto Mathletics and TTRs and complete the tasks set for them.

In our English learning, we have practised our editing skills and written up our final pieces. Next week we will be writing instructions about how to make the sandwiches we designed as a part of our Design and Technology learning.

During the last week of term, Pope Paul’s Got Talent is returning!  This is an occasion where each child is encouraged to share their talents either on their own or with a partner(s).  Each class will decide upon two entries from their own class that will go forward towards the whole school’s got talent competition.   Please chat with your child to encourage them to participate.

Monday 11th December:   Year 3’s Egyptian Day.

Year 3 will be taking part in a special Egyptian day on Monday 11th December when the children will find out what it was really like to be an Ancient Egyptian. This will reinforce the learning and hard work which has already taken place in the classroom.  The children can be Egyptologists or Ancient Egyptians.

EGYPTOLOGISTS: jeans or shorts, wacky jumper or t-shirt and hat .

ANCIENT EGYPTIANS: ready-made Egyptian outfits are readily available on the Internet e.g. Cleopatra, Pharaohs, mummies, slaves etc.

Alternatively, costumes can be made out of a length of white material. Old bed sheets are perfect!

The children are still to bring a packed lunch or order their hot dinner as normal and wear a jacket or a coat, hat etc.. for playtime.

Home Learning:  RE      Christmas Around the World

Please read the information on the poster attached.  The instructions have also been added to this week’s newsletter

Spelling have been put on spelling shed as usual.

Autumn 2 Week 6

The highlight of our week was our Christmas Nativity! ‘The Sleepy Shepherd’ We were very proud of how the children sang, performed and spoke clearly. We were amazed by the confidence of the children performing on both days for the school and the parents. The joy on the children’s faces showed their enjoyment and how proud they were of themselves made it special. Thank you to the parents for your support.

.

This week we learnt about the second week of Advent. We lit the second purple candle on the Advent wreath. The second candle represents peace. We talked about times when we are peaceful and what we like to do to find peace. We also thought about how we want peace in the world and what we can do to help this. We read the story Peace at Last and the children acted out the story, drew pictures and wrote captions about the places daddy bear tried to find some peace. The children sorted activities that they do at night and day and painted pictures of the night.

In Maths, we have been learning about shapes and their properties. The children have learnt about circles, triangles, squares and rectangles. They have been describing the shapes by counting their corners and their sides. We have been making patterns and pictures with shapes, printing with shapes, using natural materials to make shapes and cutting shapes out.

In our Ten Ten lesson, the children were learning about different body parts and how we should look after them.

Next week the children will be auditioning for Pope Paul Got Talent. Two acts will be chosen for the final on Tuesday 19th December. If your child has a talent they would like to show – singing, dancing or anything else, they can show the class next Friday. Children will get time to practise group acts during the week.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Friday 1st December, 2023

Another busy week for Year 3!  The highlight for this week was our trip to Westminster Cathedral.  Year 3 took the the overground and the underground to Westminster Cathedral on Thursday 30th November for a special Advent Service in aid of the Catholic Children’s Society.

During the service, we listened to the Angel Gabriel who narrated the Christmas story. We heard about the annunciation, the nativity and the epiphany. Each part of the story was accompanied by a carol. Everyone enjoyed joining in with ‘O Little Town of Bethlehem’, ‘Little Donkey’, ‘Silent Night’, ‘We Three Kings of Orient Are’ and ‘Hark the Herald Angels Sing’. The choir was especially beautiful and really helped us to remember the special events before and after Jesus’ birth.

During the service, gifts were collected for the Catholic Children’s Society which is an important charity.  Well done to Hanna and Joseph S who handed in our contribution.  We heard about how the money collected through the service helped a family living in Westminster and prayed together with Bishop John to ask God to continue to help those most vulnerable and in need. It was a wonderful experience and we really enjoyed being in such a beautiful Cathedral…

Outside the cathedral, we met Clover the donkey!

After the class had eaten their lunch, they went along to see the Archbishops House but unfortunately were not able to see Cardinal Vincent Nichols!

It was a wonderful trip and thank you to Hanna’s, Matilda’s and Joseph’s mum who helped us on the trip! We are very grateful to you.

Have a wonderful weekend.

  • Our Class Egyptian Day is on Monday 11th December when the children are invited to dress up for the day.

Autumn 2 Week 5

On Monday, the children wore something purple to begin our learning about Advent.

They learnt that Advent was preparing for the birth of Jesus. The children mixed paints to make different shades of purple to remind them that purple is the colour of Advent. The first candle that is lit is a sign of Hope. The children thought about their hopes and wishes and added them to the hope jar. They made candles with purple playdough and they made Advent wreaths using paint and cotton wool.  In preparation for Fridays assembly, the children wrote their Advent promises on doves. Lots of children have promised to tidy up at home so enjoy parents! We made an Advent Calendar with our promises in to open up each day in December.

In Literacy, we read the story The Jolly Postman and the children were delighted to recognise the different characters they knew from other stories. They drew maps of the postman’s journey and added pictures and writing to their maps. Then they drew maps of the things in our playground. We thought about when we use maps and the different types of maps we use including paper maps and maps on our phones. Outside, the children have been developing their speaking and listening skills in the Post Office. They have been cutting labels and labelling envelopes. Then they were delivering letters using our post vans and filling and emptying the post box. If you need help wrapping your presents this year, the children have been showing amazing skills wrapping and labelling parcels.

On Thursday, there was lots of ice on our playground. This lead to the discussion about why the ice was there and what will happen to the ice. Children went on a hunt around the playground.

In phonics, we have continue to revise the Phase 2 sounds.

This week, we have continued to practise our songs and acting for the Nativity. We are looking forward to perform to you  on Wednesday 6th December at 9.30am for our performance.

Have a lovely weekend.

Autumn 2 Week 4

Another busy week of learning in Reception Class. This week we learnt about Hanukah, a Jewish festival. The children drew pictures of the temple that was destroyed and wrote some words and captions. They also thought about special things that they have and how they would feel if they were destroyed. They made cards to wish people Happy Hanukah and they made a menorah using their handprints. Wonderful building of temples were created too!

In Literacy, we read the story Whatever Next. The children acted out the story using props and we sequenced pictures from the story. The highlight was decorating a big rocket to use in our space station. The children loved dressing up as an astronaut and boarding the rocket. It was wonderful to  see the children practising their writing in the Space Station when writing boarding passes and writing including letters home to tell mum or dad about their adventures. They also drew and wrote a list of what they would take to space. In our Art area, the children made rockets with squares and triangles that look lovely displayed in the class.

In Maths, we have been learning about repeated patterns. Children have been extending patterns and making their own patterns by using nature objects and objects we use in the class. The children have also been drawing their own patterns. We made noises with our bodies to create patterns.

Each day, we have been working hard practising our class Nativity. Thank you for the costumes that have been sent in. If you have not sent a costume in, please can we have them next week.

In our Ten Ten lesson, we thought about how we are all special and unique. The children wrote what they thought was special about them on stars and decorated them. We through about all of the children’s amazing qualities and how we have special gifts and talents.

Remember to wear one item of purple clothing on Monday.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Year 6 Week Beginning 13.11.23

This week has been Anti-Bullying week! The week launched with both children and staff wearing odd socks to school; this  fun opportunity encouraged everyone to express themselves and celebrate their individuality!

As we are celebrating the Year of Diversity at Pope Paul, our Anti-Bullying Week focussed on the message of anti-racism. In class, the children learnt about what racism is and how they can be actively anti-racist. They also learned about unconscious bias. During lesson time, the class explored different scenarios where an anti-racist would speak out against racism through actions and words. They also made connections between anti-racism and our own school mission prayer, where we strive to respect and care for each other and to build a better world.

In Maths, Year 6 have been focussing on prime numbers, factors, common multiples, square and cube numbers and they have begun to write and edit the first drafts of their diary entries, in English.

In Science, Year 6 had lots of fun creating models using themselves, to show how light helps us to see.

Home learning has been set on the following websites:

Friday 17th November 2023

This week as part of Anti-Bullying week, we have focussed on race, racism and what it means to be anti-racist.  We discussed how we can stop racism in our actions  and how we can be a good friend by promoting kindness and ending racism. The children created their own ‘say NO to racism posters’ understanding that racism hurts feelings – it makes people feel sad, lonely and confused; racism is unfair and they should feel proud of what makes them feel different and special.

Our English learning using the Spider and the Fly has continued. We have looked at ‘alien sentences’ to help build up our sentence structure knowledge and identify what aspects of a sentence are missing in in order to make them complete.

In Maths, we completed our work on using compensation to add and have been working hard on subtracting 2-digit numbers mentally.  In Science, we have begun our new topic on forces and magnets. On Thursday, we took part in an investigation to test what surface created the most friction.

We have also begun our RHE curriculum and the children learnt to unpack the Sacraments of Baptism and
Reconciliation, understanding that through prayer, the Sacraments and their friendships and relationships with others, will bring them even closer to Jesus.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Remember, Class Trip to the Science Museum is on Tuesday 21st November. Please check your school comms account to give permission etc. Children should wear their full school uniform.
