Year 5 – 16/09/22

Welcome to the end of another week! Our week began with a karate session, which allowed the children to revise some of the stances that they learnt last year.

Our art topic this half term is about typography, so our art lesson today allowed the children to experiment with cut-out typography. Have a look at some of their creations! Also this week:

  • We learnt about metre in music and tried conducting;
  • We continued an unfinished story by Roald Dahl started called The Eyes of Mr Croaker to celebrate Roald Dahl day;
  • We practised writing similes and metaphors in English;
  • We compared and ordered numbers up to 1,000,000 in Maths;
  • We had our first swimming session of the term
  • We had a visit from Ofsted! The children behaved and participated beautifully in front of our visiting inspector and did the school proud. – well done!

In light of the long weekend for national mourning, there is no home learning set this week.

See you on Tuesday.

This last week has meant that the children have adapted to a hotter learning environment than normal and they did this with such maturity. In D&T most of the children completed their CAMs project.  Well done to them for their resilience throughout each session.  As a class, we discussed what their successes were and areas to focus on next year when we have our next Design and Technology project!  I have a video in the making and will share that with them in September and on our Year 6 Blog.

Mrs Lines, Ms Hilton and myself have enjoyed assisting your child with their learning and thank you for the report comments that were returned to us this week.

Thank you for the commitment you have towards your child’s learning and the generous gifts and flowers that we received yesterday and today.

Wishing you a wonderful summer – we are looking forward to hearing about all your holiday adventures in September!

God Bless.

Our CAMs Project

It has definitely been another busy week in Year 5!

This week the focus has been our CAMs project in Design and Technology and although some of the children have found taking their design and making it a slight challenge, they have been resilient in their approach and as you can see from the photos above, their designs are coming along!  This project is giving the children the opportunity to be practical, solve problems and gain skills for the future.  Trial and error is a huge element of Design and Technology and enables children to build resilience and focus on the process as much as the outcome. The children have been selecting a range of equipment and materials in order to create their product and I am so pleased to see them adapting their design if things aren’t going as planned.

On Tuesday the class went to see the production of Beauty and the Beast at Nicolas Breakspear which they thoroughly enjoyed and on Wednesday some children attended the production of Mary Poppins at Mount Grace School. Again, they enjoyed this experience to watch children at the school (some past pupils of Pope Paul) take part.

A BIG well done must go to the choir and orchestra members who performed at the Wyllyotts Theatre on Wednesday evening.  They have been busy rehearsing for many weeks and their commitment ensured that the performance was a massive success!!

On Thursday, we were then treated to another concert – our guitarists from Year 5 performed in front parents and other family members and friends and children from Key Stage 2.  Performing in front of an audience can be a very nervous experience BUT the children played really well.

Wishing you and your families a lovely weekend.  It’s going to be a sunny one!

Friday 1st July, 2022

This week we have continued to work on interpreting data in tables in Maths and spent time revisiting percentages and fractions in our fluency sessions.  We went to Our Lady and St Vincent’s Church on Wednesday to celebrate the feast of Ss Peter and Paul.  During Fr Shaun’s homily the children raised their hands on many occasions to answer his questions on Ss Peter and Paul. Well done children.

Yesterday, the class got busy doing design and technology as they have begun their CAMs project.  The children found out things about toys from 1837 – 1901 ad then about mechanical toys.  They have found out that a cam mechanism is made up of three components: a cam, slider and follower and the mechanism that causes components to move.  From our second session, the children investigated the different types of cams which create different movements  and looked at what happens if they replaced the eccentric cam, for example, for another.  They were then set the challenge of drawing the movement of any cam investigated.  They rose to the challenge and from their findings, have chosen two or three cams they would like to use to create their own mechanical toy.  Next week they will be looking at both linear and rotary movement.

In RSE we looked at The Trinity and the importance of the Home, School and Parish links and then discussed what Catholic Social Teaching is.

On Thursday afternoon, we had group of Year 2 children come and visit our classroom.  They were sharing with us their ‘Monster’ stories.  The class listened carefully to each child who read their story beautifully and showed us their monster designs.  It was lovely to see two proud older sisters listen to their sister and brother share their work.

In English this week we have begun a new unit based on Water de la Mere’s ‘The Listener’. We have been exploring the vocabulary and the way it is performed. Today we used instruments to add mood and atmosphere to the poem.

Wishing you and your families a lovely weekend.

Friday 24th June 2022

This week in Year 5 we have been working hard in all areas of the curriculum.

We completed our focus work on angles in Maths and have now started looking at reading and interpreting data and graphs.  In Science, we completed our space learning by discovering why we have day and night. To help us see the effect of our planet turning, we went outside to measure shadows and monitor their direction using compasses.

In Geography, we compared two mountain ranges: the Himalayas and the Cambrian mountains. Year 5 were surprised to discover how much older the Cambrian mountains are and could identify how erosion has changed their shape. We also investigated the Cambrians by looking at their climate and made climate graphs. We also considered how this wet and cold climate impacted local farmers.

Wishing you and your families a lovely weekend.

What a week! The sun has shone and Year 5 has been a hive of activity. It was Healthy Eating Week this week and Year 5’s focus was on getting more than their 5 a day. Thank you to everyone for bringing in their favourite fruits and vegetables- we have been feasting on them all week! It was a great opportunity for children to enjoy the foods they like, have something they haven’t eaten in a while or even try something completely new. On Thursday, we teamed up with Year 1 to make fruit kebabs and salads. Year 5 were exemplary in their behaviour with the younger children and supported them beautifully.

On Tuesday we held our annual sports day. Well done to St Bernadette’s house, our overall winners, and to all children for trying their best.

Today we took part in another one of our annual events- The Blessed Sacrament procession. Year 5 were again excellent role models for their Year 1 partners in the reverent and peaceful journey to the church. We hope the children enjoyed their well-deserved ice-lolly at the end.

Wishing you a wonderful weekend

Bethlehem was God with us, Calvary was God for us, and Pentecost is God in us.

Robert Baer

Welcome back. We hope you all enjoyed the long weekend and had fun taking part in jubilee celebrations.

In our first week back, we have explored the themes of Pentecost through a cross-curricular approach so that our children’s understanding of this important feast was contextualised and enriched.  Working alongside other Catholic schools in our area (St Phillip Howard, Holy Family and Our Lady’s), we devised a week of learning where we took the themes of Pentecost (Water, Wind and Fire) and completed activities based on them.

Water

Using our knowledge of tints and shade, we painted water. Through the different shades, we created depth and movement.

Year 5 made water wheels using polystyrene centres and various items as paddles, which was a fun STEM activity.

A water poem was used to create performance pieces.

Using a stimulus based on the ocean, the children created movement phrases and performed a dance in unison and canon.  Many of the groups shared their performances to the rest of the class.

Using ‘Storm Interlude’ written by Benjamin Britten, the children composed their own chorus based on the words below using a variety of percussion instruments:

‘Here comes the wave; here comes a big one.

Here comes the biggest of the biggest of them.

Here comes the biggest of them!’

                                             Then each group performed their compositions to the rest of the class

Click here to see photos of the children

Wind

Using ‘Can you see the Wind? as a stimulus in English, the children examined this lovely poem and answered questions about it.

For their Geography focus, the children studied tornadoes, learning that they are a violent, rotating column of air between a thunderstorm and the ground. They discovered that most tornadoes occur in Tornado Alley and about 30 tornadoes per year are reported in the UK.  The most shocking fact was that the UK has more tornadoes per unit of land than any other country in the world!  We then went on to build a tornado of our own which Dale assisted us with.

Fire

Under the theme of fire we looked at the Fire Triangle and investigated the question: Does fire need oxygen to continue burning? The children explored this and discovered that by putting the jar over the candle keeps oxygen from outside the jar from getting in.  Running out of oxygen makes the flame go out.

The children went on to find out about Wildfires and the primary and secondary effects of these. We completed our research by discussing how different fires are fought differently, with the big idea to deprive the fire of its fuel and let it go out by itself.

Year 5 also created kenning poems about fire. Take a look at a couple written by Max and Arthur.

This morning, we had a visit from  Fr Fidelis, a Spiritan Chaplain at NBS. Year 5 asked him some questions about his vocation. It was wonderful to hear about how the Holy Spirit guides him and the challenges he faces.

This afternoon, Fr Shaun celebrated mass with us in school and the children each received an ice lolly as a special treat – a lovely ending to a busy week of learning!

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend.  We look forward to seeing you at the Potters Bar Carnival on Sunday.  Please see the newsletter re information on meeting on Sunday near Mount Grace School to take part in our walking float!  Come dressed in red, white and blue!

Friday 27th May 2022

We have come to the end of our half term and what a final day we had! The children looked wonderful in their Jubilee outfits and had a great day taking part in activities to celebrate. Thank you to Lisa, our school cook, for baking cakes for us all to share at the end of the day.

On Tuesday, Charlie Max, Monica and Sophie  took part in the Oakmere Mini Marathon.  Miss Pringle praised the children for their efforts.  Well done!

Our History focus for this week was to learn about how jubilees were different in the past. Year 5 were able to identify ways that celebrations are the same and how they have changed.

This week was also our annual Spirituality Focus and on Thursday after the Ascension Day Mass at Our Lady and St Vincent’s Church, the children took part in the stations that had been set up for them in the Main Hall. Well done to the class who were very respectful and involved in Fr Shaun’s homily…answering his questions and telling the congregation about the Ascension and other things.  A number of the parishioners came up to us after the mass to compliment the children on how they showed such reverence in Mass.  Well done Year 5! Thank you also to Macy and Finn who read for the mass clearly and articulately.  Thank you to Year 6 for leading the stations and helping Year 5 pray and reflect. Next year, Year 5 will be the ones to take on this role of responsibility and we can’t wait to see them rise to the occasion. We also created prayer cards for a Year 2 child. It was wonderful to meet with them and exchange our cards earlier today.

Have a wonderful half term
