This week, the main excitement was on Tuesday when the choir members took part in the Young Voices concert at Wembley Arena. They were still buzzing from it for most of Wednesday, until the tiredness from the late night hit them! Well done choir!
Meanwhile, those back at school joined forces with the Y3s and Y4s to plan and construct bridges. Their structures were very impressive and they worked brilliantly in their teams.

This week has been Other Faith Week, and Y5 have been learning about Sikhism. We found out about the 5 Ks in Sikhism, and researched the most important place of pilgrimage for Sikhs: Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple). Ask your child what the 5 Ks are and why Sikhs go on pilgrimage to Harmandir Sahib!
In Science, we carried out investigations to look at the effect of surface area on air resistance. We discussed the importance of repeated measurements to ensure more reliable results.

Happy New Year and welcome back! On Monday, we celebrated the Feast of the Epiphany that took place last Friday. The children made crowns fit for a king and reflected on what gifts they will bring to the world this year. In our RE lessons, we learned what the word ‘epiphany’ actually means and recognised that there are in fact three epiphanies of Jesus.
In Maths, we have been learning and practising the formal written method for addition and subtraction, and in PE we began our gymnastics unit. In Science, we started making spinners in order to investigate the effect that surface area has on a falling object.
It has been a lovely week and a great start to the new term!

Oh, what a week it’s been! Snow, Christmas jumpers, Christmas dinner, panto, Christmas party…it has certainly been a fun one! Enjoy the photos and videos of Year 5’s week!
Thursday was panto day, for which the Year 5s walked and sat excitedly with the Year 1s to watch Dick Wittington and his Cat. It was thoroughly enjoyed by all!
Today was our Christmas Party where we had a competitive game of Pin the Carrot on the Snowman, had professional photos taken, met Father Christmas in our school grotto, played a game of head bowling, enjoyed party food in the hall, then ended the day with a glow-stick disco and dance-off. The children will definitely sleep well tonight!

I expect you are all out building snowmen already, but here is a selection of snow-related activities to help you get the most from your day.
English

Write a diary of what you have been up to in the snow
Create a word bank of ‘snowy’ words and write a shape poem.
Art
Create some snow art and take a photo.
Take close-up shots of snowflakes. What do you notice?
What is the most elaborate snow sculpture you can make?
STEM (Science, technology, engineering, and maths)
Using what you learnt least week at the Science Museum about friction, can you design (and even make) a sledge? What materials would make the fastest sledge? Could you test this out?
Who can keep a snowball the longest? Start with a football-sized ball of snow. Where will you keep it? Predict how long it will last. Observe over time and we’ll see whose is longest lasting.
Measure and record how quickly the snow is melting. How would you make it a fair test? How could you present your results?

The highlight of this week was definitely our trip to the Science Museum! After travelling down to South Kensington by train and tube, we entered the Museum and enjoyed immersing ourselves in all the hands-on activities in the Wonderlab interactive gallery. Favourites included the friction slides, Tesla coil demo and magnetic liquid. After lunch, we had front-row seats at the Feel The Force show, which involved lots of fun demonstrations about forces. It was such a fun day, during which the children behaved beautifully and immersed themselves fully in the science.
Well done for your wonderful reading, singing and miming in Wednesday night’s Advent Service; it was such a special way to prepare ourselves for Jesus’ birth.

Things are starting to feel very festive! Year 5 had a lovely day out on Wednesday to Westminster Cathedral, where they watched the Christmas story being acted out with a live choir and even a real donkey and goat! The children behaved and sung beautifully, and were wonderful with the Year 3s.
We have been praying the Jesse Tree each day in order to prepare ourselves for Christmas this Advent. We have enjoyed hearing the stories about Jesus’ ancestors and writing reflections about how we can put into action what we learn from each story.
We welcomed Bishop John into our school yesterday, and we were interested to find out about his role as a bishop. He likened it to him being a shepherd that leads his flock, and showed us his crook and mitre.
Today in Science, we investigated air resistance and how the surface area of a piece of paper affects how quickly it falls. We’re looking forward to our trip to the Science Museum on Thursday when we’ll be able to immerse ourselves in our forces learning!

Yesterday was the big day for our Y5s. Joining with Y5s from other Catholic schools plus members of Nicholas Breakspear, the children shared a wonderful day at the Wyllyotts Theatre, where speeches and seminars on leadership and Catholic Social Teaching were delivered as part of our Oracy for Advocacy project. The morning consisted of the children moving around in groups to listen to seminars about how their schools work for the common good. The Pope Paul seminar speakers were Amber, Lucy L, Siena and Vincent and they were fantastic, noticeably building in confidence as the morning progressed and as they delivered their talks more and more times.

The afternoon saw the 150-200 children involved congregate in the main auditorium for the main speeches. Eraldo gave a confident and persuasive speech about why we should care for our planet, and Julia gave a personal and impassioned presentation about the need for equality in this world. Both fit beautifully into our school’s mission which strives to develop leaders of the future who will help to build a better world. Listen to their speeches here:
