What is a scientist?

scientist is a person who studies or has expertise in science. A scientist tries to understand the world around us. Scientists make observations, ask questions and do extensive research work in finding the answers to many questions others may not know about.

Year 2 have been learning about the type of work scientists do. In particular we have looked at the work of the food scientist, Dr. Charlotte Armah. Dr. Armah leads experiments involving human volunteers to learn whether eating particular foods, especially broccoli, can protect us from diseases!

In Maths, we have been looking at measures. The children have been estimating and measuring using different scales as well as using standard and non standard units of measure.

As part of our anti-bullying week, Year 2 learnt how to identify bullying and the children created some wonderful posters. We also looked at the issue of cyber-bullying and what to do if something happens online. https://www.bbc.co.uk/newsround/35506689

On Sunday we celebrate The Feast of Christ the King. Year 2 made some beautiful crowns and thought very carefully about the type of King Jesus is.

This week Year 2 took part in the whole school virtual Remembrance Assembly. It was very special to come together and pray for those who lost their lives serving their countries and for our loved ones who are no longer with us. May they rest in peace. Amen

In Maths we have been learning all about balancing and rebalancing. The children have been looking at rebalancing number sentences. The children identified the number in their calculation that was near a friendly number (multiple of ten) and used a bead string to rebalance their calculation.

In English we have turned our attention to fairy tales. We have been looking at the tale of Rapunzel. The children generated plenty of amazing adjectives to describe Rapunzel in Beth Woolvin’s version of this tale.

Rapunzel is an adventurous, brave and crafty character.  The children thought carefully about what the witch says in the story. They had great fun role-playing the wicked, nasty witch from this tale.

This week for our Mental Health and Wellbeing lesson, we focused on Anthony Browne’s book ‘Silly Billy’. It is a story about a little boy called Billy who worries about everything.  Billy is so anxious that he can’t sleep. But Grandma has just the thing for a boy like Billy — tiny, colorful worry dolls, made to do his worrying for him. That night when Billy put the dolls under his pillow, he slept like a log. What an action packed week it has been in Year 2! The highlight of our week was definitely our walk to Mimmshall Brook. We were blessed with a beautiful morning. With our wellington boots on, we made our way along muddy paths and ploughed fields until we reached the babbling brook. The water was crystal clear and Year 2 delighted in watching the stream flow under the beautiful old bridge. The children were wonderful ambassadors for our school and they were very responsible on our walk.  Next week we will begin writing our River stories as part of our whole school writing project.
