Summer 2 Week 4

July 1, 2022/in Year 2, Year 2 Archive /by Margaret Joyce

In Maths, we have been learning to follow number and shape sequences. We have also identified 2D shapes in repeating patterns.

In English, the children wrote their own monster stories with cliff hangers that they edited, wrote up in neat and performed to other classes. Their stories are excellent! The children used adjectives, expanded noun phrases, different suffixes and conjunctions to engage the reader.

Thank you for wine donations for our summer raffle – the children looked great in their odd socks.

Have a lovely weekend

Summer 2 Week 3

June 24, 2022/in Archives, Year 2, Year 2 Archive /by Margaret Joyce

In Year 2 this week, the children have created their own monsters and written descriptions of them. They have also written a letter warning a child not to take a monster to school. Next week they will be planning and writing a story about a monster coming to Pope Paul School! They will need to include descriptive language, conjunctions and interesting sentence starters to engage the reader.

In Maths, the children have been learning about symmetry . They have investigated which 2D shapes have lines of symmetry and used mirrors to help them reflect a pattern across a mirror line, creating symmetrical pictures.

In swimming, the children learnt about the meaning of different flags at beaches and swimming pools. They also learnt what do if they fall into open water and how to save someone else.

The children have also enjoyed tending to the gardens and playing lots of tennis and badminton at playtime.

Have a lovely weekend

English – Please think about what trouble a monster might cause at school and how the children might teach the monster how to behave. Bring an A4 piece of paper with ideas (not a whole story) on, that can be used to support their story writing in class. For example would they; Chase the teachers? Eat all the pizza? Teach the children to roar/fly/breath fire? Break all the chairs? Smash the jungle gym? Climb/ Fly onto the roof? Make friends? Become a Y2 pupil or teacher at Pope Paul School?

Summer 2 Week 2

June 17, 2022/in Archives, Year 2, Year 2 Archive /by Margaret Joyce

Year 2 have thoroughly enjoyed Sports Day and Healthy Eating Week this week.

Everyone tried their best and used their talents on sports day. It was great to welcome the parents to celebrate our sporting achievements and then share our learning environment with them afterwards.

As part of Healthy eating week, we have learnt about the importance of keeping fit and healthy though exercise and diet. Lisa, our head cook, explained to us that we need a mixture of different food types on our plate in order for us to have a balanced diet. We have also learnt the importance of drinking water, which foods keep us hydrated  and why we shouldn’t waste food.

Summer 2 Week 1

June 10, 2022/in Year 2, Year 2 Archive /by Margaret Joyce

It was lovely to welcome the children back after their holiday and  hear about their half term holiday. As part of our Pentecost learning our learning was focused on water, wind and fire. Today we also had a visit from Fr Fidelis, a Spiritan chaplain at NBS,  Mass led by Fr. Shaun and an ice lolly in the sunshine!

One of the children’s  water and wind challenges this week was to design, built, test and evaluate a boat that would float and carry a teddy bear safely across the water tray. They worked very well together and were extremely creative.

In Maths we have been learning about the properties of 2D shapes. Next week we will be focusing on 3D shapes.

Next Tuesday you are invited to join us for Sports Day at 1:45pm and then at 3:15pm you may collect your child to visit their current and then new classrooms. This is not a formal consultation or a book look as the books and reports will be sent home at the end of the term.

Holy Communion application forms are available to collect from Church after Mass.

P.E. kits for Monday, Tuesday (Sports day) and Wednesday (swimming) next week.

Enjoy the weekend,

Miss Pringle

What a wonderful end to this half term we have had! The children looked fantastic in their Jubilee outfits and had a great day taking part in activities to celebrate.

Our History focus for this week was to learn who the Queen is, what her roles are and why we are having a jubilee celebration. In PE have learnt to serve in tennis and practised bowling and throwing accurately at the stumps in cricket. At the end of our swimming lesson on Wednesday we enjoyed a ‘fun swim!’

As part of Spirituality Week we planted wild flower seeds and created prayer cards for a Year 5 child. It was wonderful to meet with them and exchange our cards earlier today.  Click here for some photos of this special time with Year 5.

Have a wonderful half term

Summer 1 Week 1

April 22, 2022/in Year 2, Year 2 Archive /by Margaret Joyce

Welcome back, I hope you had a wonderful holiday.

In class this week we read Luke’s account of the Resurrection and created pictures with the characters and symbols mentioned. Thank you for the beautiful Easter gardens that the children made over the Easter break.

In English we have been busy editing, while in Guided Reading we have used our inference and retrieval skills to answer comprehension questions.

We have been working hard in maths to learn how to find 1/2 , 1/4, 2/4, 3/4 1/3 and 2/3 of different amounts.

We started outdoor adventure in P.E. where we have to work sensibly and effectively in groups to find clues and solve problems. This week we had to find objects about the outdoor area using picture cards, take selfies on the iPad next to the objects and then exchange our selfies for letters that were used to crack a code!

In Science, we have tested which materials allow light to pass through them and what makes a material suitable for making certain objects.

Have a great weekend
