Year 2 Blog Week 16

What a busy week it has been! The children have been learning all about the Exodus story in Religion. Firstly, we looked at the features of an epic story and located Egypt on the map. Then the children created some beautiful artwork for our R.E. display and sequenced the Exodus story.

In maths, we have continued work on measurements. The children have been working very hard on their mental fluency as well as solving word problems.  The caption of the week in maths has been ‘Prove it!’ Year 2 are understanding the importance of showing their workings out. We have seen lots of different strategies employed… partitioning as well as drawing dienes and number lines!

In P.E. this week this week the children have been concentrating on indoor games. It was a lot of fun! IMG_0988

Year 2 Blog Week 15

Happy New Year and Welcome back! I hope you all had a joyful break. Thank you for all your kindness and generosity last term. We have another busy and exciting term ahead of us. Year 2 have already thrown themselves into their learning.

Dublin, Ireland, has been chosen by Pope Francis to host the next World Meeting of Families 2018, guided by the theme “The Gospel of the Family: Joy for the World”. In R.E. this week we launched The Year of the Family. We discussed belonging to a family and how even though families are all different and live in many different places, they share one thing: love.

In Maths we have been looking at capacity and measure. The children used their reasoning skills to solve a thirsty problem. The children had to put 7 glasses in the correct order. Some of the clues were tricky – The two full glasses of orange juice are next to each other.

In Computing we have been learning about algorithms and repetition. There were lots of great examples of what you could program a robot to do.

Joseph – ‘I will program my robot to do my homework.’

Phoebe – ‘I will program my robot to sing a song.’

William – ‘I will program my robot to clean my bedroom.’

The children discovered that giving precise instructions is very important!

This week we closed our 50 Years celebrations with a very special assembly and Act of Worship, which was attended by Bishop John Wilson. It was lovely to look back and remember all the wonderful things we did as a school to celebrate our 50th Year in Catholic education.

IMG_0567

Year 2 have been very busy this week rehearsing for the Christmas Nativity play and making the displays for the stage. We are really looking forward to performing in front of an audience next week. Put that date in your diaries – Wednesday 13th at 9:30 a.m.

IMG_0583

The children also looked at a story from Mexico – The Christmas Poinsettia. Everyone enjoyed the learning about la Flor de Nochebuena – the Flower of the Holy Night and produced some wonderful retellings.

IMG_0584

In maths this week, we have been looking at subtracting a 1 digit number from a 2 digit number. The children have been employing their strategy of partitioning to great success!

Year 2 Blog Week 12

What is a tree’s least favourite month? ……Sep-timber!

It was a very cold morning on Thursday and Year 2 wrapped up warm for their walk in the woods as part of National Tree Week 2017. The children were challenged with the task of creating a waterproof elf shelter using only the materials they could find in the woods in Dame Alice Owen’s school. The children thought carefully about the materials they used and their properties.

Year 2 Blog Week 9

It has been all about balancing and rebalancing this week in Year 2. In maths, the children have been looking at rebalancing number sentences. The children identified the number in their calculation that was near a friendly number (multiple of ten) and used a beadstring to rebalance their calculation.balance

How would you rebalance the following calculations?

41 + 13 =

24 + 39 =

18 + 28 =

In P.E. we were also looking at balancing! The children explored balancing on 2, 3 and 4 parts of their bodies.

What number bonds do you see? If 4 + 6 = 10…. What else do you know?

In P.E. this week we started gymnastics. The children had great fun on the mats perfecting their forward rolls and their log rolls! There are definitely some talented gymnasts in our midst!
