A busy week in Year 1 again! To begin Spirituality Week, we had an assembly on Monday. Then we made butterflies with a prayer for our prayer partners in Year 5 and were delighted when we got to play with them. Next we made postcards to pray for people in our community and they were given to Father Shaun. On Thursday, we spent time at different prayer stations, led by Year 6.

In English, the children were excited about our story bags to support them when writing a story. They used a variety of adjectives and different sentence starters to make their stories exciting.

On Wednesday, we were excited when Mrs Lennox bought a package to the class. When we opened it, they were shocked and excited to find two eggs. The children thought of different questions they would like to ask and then they predicted what they thought they were. All the children suggested researching on the Internet or in non-fiction books to check if their predictions were correct.

 

In PE, we have continued to play cricket, the children have become more confident with the rules and their teamwork is amazing.

In Geography, we are learning about the seaside so the children painted pictures for a beautiful display in our classroom.

Home Learning

Your child has made a prediction about what the egg is. Look online or in books to see if the animal they predicted comes from an egg and print or draw a picture of the egg of their chosen animal.

We are completing 30 days of wildness so we can appreciate the nature around us. Each day in June the children will complete a different activity.  Please try to do the first six activities in the half term and bring a photo of one of the activities to school.

 

1st June – Feel the wild between your toes – squelch your toes in sand, grass or mud.

2nd June – Look up at the clouds – What shapes can you see?

3rd June – Find a creepy crawly, be gentle and observe the way it moves.

4th June – Thread a daisy chain

5th June – Make a nature table, collect wild treasures like feathers, fossils or bones.

6th June – Have lunch in the wild.

Week 6

A busy week in Year 1! The children enjoyed sharing their apple questions and research with the class.

In PE, we continued learning the rules of cricket, the children have developed their fielding and batting skills.

This week we have focused on reading skills in English. We read the book Supertato Books Are Rubbish and the children had to answer questions by retrieving information, sequencing and predicting. Jack kindly bought in different Supertato books for us to read. In Art, we continued developing our printing skills using vegetables to print our own superheroes.

In Maths, we have been solving problems including addition. We thought of how we can prove our answers by explaining our methods.

In Religion, the children acted out and retold the story of Pentecost. Then they made flames for our class display.

On Friday, we looked at programming in Computing. We made up our own instructions to make lego models and we gave instructions to the Bee-bots to move to different places.

Reading – Read your favourite book and then make a poster about the book. Can you describe the characters, setting and say why you like it? Draw a picture of your favourite part.

Science – We are making a nature table. Go for a walk and see if you can find some if the following items: rocks, stones, fossils, bones, pine cones, feathers, leaves, twigs or petals. Bring them in on Monday.

Week 5

In Maths, we have been comparing numbers using <, >, = signs. The children have been solving problems and explaining their answers.

In English, the children have been editing their stories and writing them in their best handwriting to display in the classroom. In phonics we have been learning about how the diagraph ie can make the sound igh or ee.

Thank you for sending in apples, the children had fun investigating. They thought of questions and then planned and tested to find the answer. We then looked at the results to check if there were patterns. The apples were then used to print pictures of flowers.

On Thursday, it was Ascension Thursday, the children retold the story in their own words.

Science- The children have been asking questions about apples. Please write a question they would like to find the answer to at the top of a page and then research to find the answer, write the information on the paper and draw a picture of an apple.

Here are some of the questions they have been asking – You can use one of these of think of one of your own. Please send it in by Wednesday 19th May so they can share with the class.

Why do apples have stems?

Why do apples grow on a tree?

Week 4

On Friday, we honoured Mary by placing flowers around her. The children were respectful throughout. Then the children sat in the peace garden and sketched a picture of Mary.

This week we have been learning to order and compare numbers on a number line. If the number line ended in 20, we thought about what number would be in the middle, then we looked at what the number line could be counting in – ones, twos, fives or tens.

 

In English, we have been learning about plurals, when to add s and when to add es. We have also been practising to spell tricky words and Year 1 words, please continue to practise at home.

 

In Science we have been learning about the different parts of a plant. Next week we will be asking questions about apples to help us to plan how we might find the answers to our questions. Please bring an apple in on Wednesday, we will be using them for Science and printing in Art.

In Science, we read an article in the news about the new rover Perseverance that landed on the moon. The children wrote their own news reports on it. Jack P then made a lego rover at home.

We planted potatoes in the school gardens so we will be watering them each day and observing the changes.

Week 3

In Maths, we have continued to solve problem involving multiplication. The children made arrays using counters, cereal and drawing them.

 

We have been reading the story Click, Clack Moo Cows Can Type. The children planned and wrote their own stories based on this book.

On Thursday, we had a cricket lesson, the children thoroughly enjoyed it. We will be having cricket lessons each week after half term.

On 1st May, it is the feast day of St Joseph the Worker. The children described his qualities and wrote a prayer for workers in our communities that we would like to thank.

Week 2

A fun and busy week in Year 1! On Tuesday, the children were delighted to see the farm animals in our playground. They stroked and fed the animals and learnt about what they like to eat. Then they wrote a recount of their experience. Their writing was fantastic! In the afternoon, the children made farm animals using clay and painted them later in the week.

In Maths, the children have been drawing cherry models and bar models to solve different calculations and to help them to understand the link between addition and subtraction. They also corrected problems given to them and explained the mistakes that they identified.

In PE, the children learnt to play the game rounders. We focused on how important teamwork is when playing a competitive game.

In Science we observed the tulips in our garden carefully and drew and coloured them in. Their attention to detail was brilliant!

On Friday, the children learn the story of St George and retold it in their own words.

Summer Term Week 1

On Monday, we had fun celebrating Easter! We listened to the story of the Resurrection and then had an Easter egg hunt. The children were delighted with their Easter eggs. The children used water paints to create a beautiful picture of the Resurrection. We retold the story through role play. The winner of the raffle was Connor!

In English, the children have been writing their own non-fiction texts on farm animals. They have been using books and the Internet to find out facts and write them up. They have been learning the features of non-fiction texts and have included them in their writing. Can you find some non-fiction books at home?

In our phonics lessons we have been learning the different pronunciations for the letter a and the letter i.

In Maths, we have been solving multiplication problems using resources and drawing pictures. The children have been developing their reasoning skills through explanations.

In Science we learnt about the parts of a plant and created pictures to show each part.

Spring Term Week 5

Another term is over! The children settled back into class well this term and worked extremely hard.

This week we have been reading the stories from Mark’s Gospel about Holy Week. The children have retold the stories through role play, writing and art.

 

In Maths we have been counting in twos, fives and tens and solving problems. Please continue to practise counting on and back in twos, fives and tens.

The children finished their playground equipment and evaluated their equipment.

On Wednesday the children took part in a cross hunt and then on Thursday the children took part in an obstacle course arranged by Year 6.

On Friday, we made rice crispy cakes.

Week 2

In Maths, we have been learning about money. The children have been making different amounts, remembering that we can only use the numbers on the coins 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p and 50p.

In Religion, the children wrote a prayer to St Joseph and have been listening to stories from Mark’s Gospel that are read at church during Holy Week.

We have wonderful inventors in the classroom and the children worked like our building learning power ant when they planned their own playgrounds. The children then followed their designs to begin making their playground equipment.

We have continued to complete a daily mile and in PE we were learning about changing direction and running at speed. Please have old trainers or boots for next week.

On Friday, we celebrated Red Nose Day. The children looked great in red or with their noses on. We had fun listening to the children’s jokes and discussing how laughter is good for our wellbeing. We did our daily mile with a ball on a spoon.

Spring Term – Welcome Back

What a wonderful week welcoming back the children! Year 1 have settled back into the class routines very well.

Each day we walked, ran or skipped six laps of the school field, this is nearly a mile. Each day the children have become faster.

This week has been Science Week, we have been learning about inventions. The week began with the children sharing their ideas about our big question. What would life be like without electricity? Year 1 learnt about the invention of an aeroplane by The Wright Brothers. The children enjoyed watching video clips of people trying out flying techniques. As part of Science and Design and Technology, we have been looking closely at playground equipment and how they are made, in preparation for designing our own playground.

On Thursday, we celebrated World Book Day. It was lovely seeing the children in their different costumes talking about the books they enjoy. We had a visit from an old lady and Hefty Hugh who read us the books that they came from.
